Anything that I do, show or discuss on this channel is my opinion, or what I do for my family. You should always do your research to decide what is right/safe for you. I have been homesteading, preserving & prepping for years, but I am not a professional in any of these fields. This channel is to help give you ideas and spark your inspirational journey in a self sufficient lifestyle.
Simplify…..keep it simple….and easy. Do what you can….even if you’re in your senior years, like me, go one step at a time. We can do this!!😊
I had to rethink my storage recently. First of all, I'm not a prepper. My parents grew up during the Great Depression & the Dust Bowl days. Both of them had a philosophy that if you can afford it, buy a little extra to set aside for an unforseen contingency. Nothing much, just a little. They also advocated to reduce waste. They didn’t discard worn or damaged items, they repaired or if irreparable, repurposed those items. Our mom made about half of our clothing, so she could repair our clothing. Our dad would repair shoes, if possible, depending upon the level of wear or damage. He also made repairs on furniture & did many necessary household repairs. They saved all glass jars, bottles & jugs for reuse.
So... Here I am... Prior to the pandemic, I loved to shop thrift stores & yard sales. I got the notion that I wanted to learn canning. So I went on the hunt for canning stuff... I was able to buy loads of used canning jars for really cheap. I bought a few cases of new canning jars of various sizes for really cheap during the winter, after the summer/fall canning season had ended. Back then, end of season sales had deep discounts. I bought both my pressure canners & my water bath canner for similar deep discounts. Then I started filling in with the necessary processing equipment & utensils. All cheap because I waited til the season for its use had ended that particular year. I had friends whose elderly family members no longer preserved food, so I got canning jars & some processing equipment for free. I even bought some cast iron propane burners so I could can outdoors to avoid heating up my home. I'm all set up now... Yeah... Now all I need to do is DO IT... (easier said than done)
So, for the time being, I'm going to repurpose all those canning jars for dry goods storage. I had even gotten 2-5 gallon food grade buckets free from a family member who worked at a bakery. I kind of got stupid & used them for pots in a container garden. So, no food grade storage buckets now. I guess that I can make that my next mission, to locate cheap or free food grade buckets.
The take away from this rambling comment? Make a plan. Then implement that plan. Then try to think on your feet. You may find something outside the scope of your plan... Review your plan & decide if it's worth the expense and/or effort to include that item.
Wish this I had this video when I first started. Would've saved me from trial and error mistakes that cost me money and food.😊
I finally bought shelves! Hoping it'll help make things more organized 🤞
I Enjoy your videos! Just went through my pantry stores. You said it! Stock what you eat! My food choices have changed the last four years. I'm taking a lot of food to the food bank right now. I felt good stocking all those foods but realigning the foods we eat now! Thank you so much for your posts!
That was 7 really great tips for simplifying your storage Jinne. 👍
TFS HC, take care & keep really busy everyone. ❤🙂🐶
Thanks for talking about special diets... Very important to continue your regular diets in hard times and not try to eat regular food that HARMS YOU... Store your special Needs foods FIRST, they will more than likely, be HARDEST TO FIND/Locate in hard times!!!
Thank you for this. Sometimes everything just seems really overwhelming, and working to simplify it really helps. Also, the simpler I can make something, the more likely I am to be successful at it!
Good information. I have revised my dried beans and rice plan after realizing the additional water and fuel requirements for those items. Now it’s minute rice, quick oats, and canned beans. Living in the suburbs fuel will have to be fossil fuel and water from rain water collection. That said, I’m a big fan of freeze dried foods as well as a fan of you keep up the good work
I got the 24 cup sure fresh containers with the blue lids. I got for $.50 cents at family dollar. Need to check it out!!

Thank you! #4, as soon as I bought a thousand pounds of Chef Boyardee cans, I found out I was allergic to processed cheese, welcome to my surprise. Imaging all the food stuffs that contain all the "Salt Processed Foods:. I have not had a store bought pizza in 6 years, Sorry Poppa-Hut. Keep it real people!
Hi Jinne, any information I can assimilate is good.
Thank you Jinne! Could we put boxes of pasta in a 5 gallon bucket?
You can, removing them from the box will give you more space in the bucket.
I put mine in a 5 gallon bucket, but my 1st gallon bucket is airtight. So I just dump the pasta in with bay leaves and oxygen absorbers. I’m just storing for myself, so one5 gallon bucket, a pasta is enough for me. I did the same with my beans. Only I have I only filled the bucket, half full and filled the rest of it with different types of vacuum sealed flowers. I have enough buckets that I took the boxspring and the frame off my single bed. I put buckets under the bed with gallon jugs of water from the dollar tree in between. I put a piece of plywood cut to the size of my mattress put that on top of my buckets and my mattress on top of that. Now I have a higher bed that’s more comfortable for my 6 foot frame! And I have all that stuff, stored out of sight and out of mind. Of course things like wheatberries went in the back by the wall and things like pasta went in the front.
can you use malar bags in the FoodSaver vaccume sealer?
Yes you can. You can only do the small mylar bags in a vacumn sealer.
How long can you store instant rice in Mylar?
