I belong to a Great Depression group and a lady there shared a story from her grandmother about eating bean sausage. Her parents were struggling so they used to cook up a package of lentils, mashed them up added an egg and a little flour and sausage seasoning and fried them as patties for breakfast and sandwiches for school lunch. I was intrigued so I tried it, and....it works!!! Tastes very much like sausage and a similar texture. Another lady waded in and said she uses cooked pintos and poultry seasoning, and her little daughter thinks she's eating chicken McNuggets.

We made "I-Told-You-So" buckets several years ago using 5 gallon buckets. You can fit a lot of food in them. We put them together for family members who were used to 2 days worth of food in the homes and thought we were the crazy ones. We planned on giving them a bucket when SHTF and they came asking for food. A 5-gal bucket can fit a small can of oatmeal, peanut butter, flour, sugar, beans, rice and some other things, I can't remember off the top of my head. Funny, before watching this, my husband and I were chatting that we needed to update the buckets. Thanks!

Jinnie, thank you for showing this because there are so many people out there and they cannot afford freeze dried food or dehydrated food. They're living on a budget and I've talked to people and they feel so guilty and say they only have $100. You know what I tell them? go to Walmart and do exactly what you're doing. They could do a bucket for five people for a month- you cannot do that with these other type of foods. I've tried the mtn house. Yes it's delicious but when there's an emergency situation like that you're not gonna be eating luxury meals. I know people that do meals in a jar and all that but may not be able to carry the glass with you. this is so practical and it's for people that are living on a budget or maybe they're only living on Social Security or they're living paycheck to paycheck or they're having to live off of a credit card... I know many people like this and we have to give them hope and we have to educate them on the best way for them to buy food to sustain themselves. I have eaten beans and rice alone. Well, I did add some salt and pepper for three days to see if I could do it and I did and then I decided OK I'm gonna add like a can of tomatoes you know the diced tomatoes that have got the parsley and everything in it from Walmart and to me that was like heaven, we have to be realistic people are limited on money and they have to be able to afford the food otherwise they're gonna go hungry and then they're gonna come looking and they're gonna get other peoples food one way or the other! I'm so glad you posted this because everybody is about all these other types of food and people cannot afford it so thank you so much for doing this. and they could even add you know a couple of cans of fruit cocktail or something- there's just a way to do it without spending a fortune or not having enough food!

Rice mixed with fruit is actually not that bad.
It is hard with price and gas keeps going up it harder n harder to budget everything. This last time I went grocery shopping a store in town had a great sale on meat so I filled ( almost) my freezer. So this week payday I drove 35 miles to a town that had a dollar tree and spent $58 on food/ spices that I know was cheaper than the regular store, though I couldn't find the oatmeal people always find. I couldnt have done that if it wasn't for the for the meat sale.the week before.

I so appreciate your posts. This one really got me thinking: after the $15 on rice and beans, what would I spend the next $5 on... For me - it would be a salt/pepper set from the dollar store; oatmeal; oil and bouillon. Four items from the dollar tree is $5 right now. I'd use the oatmeal for breakfast or make flour from it. And the oil so I could fry up bean or lentil patties for a different type of bean dish. Bouillon so I could make a bean and rice soup. Thanks for all your ideas and for this community you've created.

Add 4 tins of water, 200g of mixed vegetables, lentils, rice, salt, and about 50g of dried spaghetti (break it up as small as possible).

A simple dumpling mix (half cup self raising flour, quarter cup milk, tablespoon oil, teaspoon baking powder, salt), roughly mix in a bowl (it's a sticky mess, but trust me, it works).
Leave to stand ... while you make the soup.
The dough will double in size (ish).
Divide with a spoon into 3 or 4 pieces, roll into a ball with the back of a spoon.
They look tiny, but they get very big.
Drop into the soup, cover with a lid, they cook in 7/8 minutes.

Thank you for this video, Jinne! That is exactly what I gifted my kids for Christmas a couple of years ago! I made it a "chili" bucket with all the seasonings, tomato powder, beans, rice, plus a bag of salt and snacks and hot cocoa. I had already vacuum-sealed the rice and beans. And I was just starting out, so I didn't know what to do with the other items, but it was well-received by most.😂 This gets people thinking about what they can do for less money. Great ideas! ETA: I know this is extra expense, but I bought a set of Gamma Lids from Amazon. Not only are they air-tight, but they twist off and on, so you don’t have to keep prying off the lid. Trust me, once you get them on there, you'll want to use that bucket over and over, because I hate to think what it will take to get it off of the bucket!😂 My plan is to use the buckets with the Gamma Lids first, then wash and dry the bucket and refill with the others buckets. That way I don’t have to have a Gamma Lid for every bucket. They are USA-made.

They’ve been there since the 70s they sell all their food grade buckets also with the lid for two dollars so when the pandemic hit I probably bought about six of them. I could actually use two more I even use them in my garden area like we get restricted for water so sometimes I’ll fill them up and cover them for whenever we have a drought and we can’t use the city water. I’ll have my water in my buckets and I’ll have buckets all over the place. Plus I have big, 55 gallon drums all around as well but those are great when you can get them from the restaurants for two dollars with lids

Do you know if the boxes of instant rice are good for long term storage if you repackage?

I vacuum seal my rice, beans and pasta. First, snip hole in the upper corner of whatever you ste vacuum sealing. This way, the air will be removed from the food package as well. You will end up with a brick of food. If you are worried about sharp edges poking through, wrap it with a cut brown paper bag of put thin cardboard ( cereal box) on both sides before vacuum sealing.

That's so great you're showing that, it really helps show you can still do it. Honestly,, that's what I've been doing for family and friends and am working on expanding them as I can to include other things. It's a lot of buckets and I"m not rich, but can't help being concerned for my grand kids.

So this is a month's worth of food? Or it will only last a month in bucket?

One month of food, the ingredients are all items that can be good for 10 to 30 years if properly packaged in jars or vac-packed
