Sorghum. Get sorghum seeds & grow it in your garden. It's a grass like wheat & rice. Depending on the variety, you can grow sorghum for syrup or grain. The syrup is squeezed from the canes & cooked down to make a sweetener. The grains can be popped like popcorn or ground like wheat to make flour. It's particularly good for making pancakes. Sorghum is easier to grow than sugarcane. If you grow it for syrup, the squeezed canes can be fed to livestock. They love it! No waste.
I grew sorghum last season, chooks love it too. I also keep cheap sardines and canned corn for my chooks.
Don't forget instant soup mixes, tea, not everyone drinks coffee, instant drink mixes for the children, kids, you can add drink mies just a little to give water flavor or you can add a little canned fruit juice to flavor water
Honey
Don't forget, coconut oil is also a great healing agent!!
Hard candy . 🍬 takes the craving bite out
I was amazed to find out how nutricious quinoa is. Like rice, it could stretch so many meals and be better for you, too.
Jello is really good for upset stomachs, so I thinks it's pretty important! ❤
It also has a little protein
"cranky old sea hag" LOL!!!! ALL of us before coffee, my friend!
Cranky Old Sea Hag😂😂😂 Describes me perfectly before my COFFEE 😆
Would you consider CD oing a video about different ways to cook lentils and the rice substitute you mentioned? Thank you
Mujadara is a lovely and simple way to use rice, lentils and onions. Look up the recipe on Google. It's delicious. It may be spelled different ways so don't be surprised. I use two tins of lentils to one cup rice (you have to cook the rice of course) Using the tinned lentils makes life a lot easier and they are perfectly cooked and salted. I use the water from one tin and hang on to the water from the second tin in case the mujadara gets dry. Follow the recipes for onion numbers and cumin. Cook the rice, add the lentils and cumin and the cooked onions and mix well. The one cup of rice is the uncooked measure. You can add as much of the water from the second tin of lentils as necessary to make a nice consistency. Salt to your taste of course. I even use frozen onions which is the height of laziness but I hate crying over onions. It does make life very easy
If we need to keep morale and calorie count up,I think jams and jellies are essential. Some people would disagree, but I have sugars, molasses, honey and even some corn syrup stocked away.
.Personally, I use little of them, but use stevia daily, and I have that put away. Condiments! Soy sauce, Worcestershire, sweet and sour, teriyaki, whatever, will add a great deal of variety quickly.
PICKLES of all types and pickled mixed garden vegetables, onions, beets, beans. I have stocked Instant puddings to make some quick sweets and disguise the off-taste of some canned/dried milks.
I cannot applaud your choices more; I have all of your list except pemican. Jello is good if anyone needs to go on a liquid diet. I have had cans of coconut milk in my stockpiles. Not only is it non-dairy, it is good with grains, (esp.rice, cream of rice and oatmeal), it is good in chicken! Millet, amaranth, buckwheat, quinoa and rice are gluten-free, and I have a lot of barley on hand,(not G-F). I mix the bigger grains with millet and amaranth. Rice and barley make decent cooked breakfast cereals, too.
Cocoa, chocolate, spices, lentils, bouillon, oats, coconut oil, all kinds of powdered milk, nuts and seeds, dried meats, (but not much), dehydrated vegetables, (especially mixed vegs, onions and bell peppers), dried fruits, protein bars,(I prefreeze any with nuts and then vacuum-seal them), dehydrated eggs, coffee and instant coffee, Canned fishes, (mostly salmon). Protein powder is also in my stocks.
If you rinse quinoa ( and you should), use the rinse water as a natural soap. Quinoa and English Ivy are two natural “ soaps”. Free too! 🙂
I make my coffee creamer with 1 cup powered sugar and 1 cup powdered milk. Mix very well. Keep in air tight jar. You can also add a couple of tablespoons of powered vanilla. Delicious and keeps for a very long time.
Is this shelf stable ?
Thanks for this recipe!
Just ordered from Thrive Life broccoli and cheese, so I can make your broccoli 🥦 cheese soup in a jar !! Thank you for helping us with great ideas !!❤❤
I always keep water flavorings. Kool Aid, Mio, etc. After a while plain ol’ water gets real boring!
Get the ones without Aspertaine in them.
Ginger ale for upset tummy and when you just don't feel well (Vernors was a staple growing up)
along the same train of thought, cola syrup is good to store for the times someone is sick and can't keep anything down.
Aldi has the best price for instant coffee for prepping, IMHO. Nice size jar for around $4 or less, decaf and regular:). Good list, thank you!
As for nuts, if you can get a grain mill you can make nut butter from most nuts. You can freeze it and it will last for many years.
I have an oil extractor and have planted nut trees, also planting peanuts this year. The grounds left over can be made into patties, sauces, butters and curries.
You can freeze whole nuts too
My grandma used to mix oats and millet for my breakfast cereal.
Are you familiar with muesli?
Barley is great in beef and vegetable soup, adds chew that feels like beef if soup is lite on meat. Dried browned ground beef and dried mixed veggie great in that soup. With tomato powder, tomato leather or dried tomatoes, dehydrated onion and bell peppers plus spices makes instant soup in a jar.
I never tried drying browned ground beef. I think that’s a great idea. Thanks! 💕🙏💕
@@heavenbound2713 if you try drying ground beef a important step after draining is to rinse with boiling water to remove as much fat as possible, the fat goes rancid eventually if not removed, greatly extends storage life. Good luck. Also if you continue to heat the drained fat untill it stops boiling( when the water is cooked off) strain off any browned protein, and store the rendered tallow, will solidify , keeps on my counter. Great for frying French fries.
@@user-dt3sq7rw3b Thank you for the tips! 😊
Oats are getting a bad rap in our modern obese society, but it seems to me that all of the reasons for not eating it now, are exactly the same same features that make it a great shtf ration.
I love oatmeal.. l can't remember.. but, l heard that certain brands including quaker has a bad chemical in it. So..I'll buy NON GMO.
Oatmeal is good for you! And there's so much you can do with it.. l don't care what they say! LOL
I've got to have my oatmeal. ..LOL 🤣🙋♀️
A place to get oats fairly cheap is at the local feed store. Probably other grains as well. I looked at Tractor Supply, and it was there.
If you're going to buy oats or other grains from a feed store be sure to check if they have other things in them meant for animals that might not be suitable for humans
Q
An alternative would be
Cream of wheat
It's delicious and smooth texture!
Q❤
Such an all-inclusive list!!😊. There are a few things that I don’t have. I better get busy!!😁
I made some salsa and dehydrated it then powered it. And I swear it makes a tons of dishes taste better!
Jenne would you do a reciepe with can salmon? I bought a can to try it but I don't really know how to cook with it.
Look up Natasha’s Kitchen salmon pattie recipe. It’s the best I’ve found. The recipe calls for fresh salmon but I just use canned.
Salmon Alfredo pasta is amazing ! Google for recipes
My mother made jell-o water for us when we were too sick to keep anything else down. You just follow the package directions. Just add 2 times as much cold 💧 water the kids drink it better than plain water when they're not feeling too good
I have several of these, I love having diversity in my long term food storage. I have even found red quinoa. some of the others I want to get more of. we use coconut milk for some dishes cooked in my mosque kitchen for some of our community doinners
Love this list. Millet is so good. You can brown them up in the frying pan before you add any liquid to finish them off. Yum!
Great list , I didn't think of some of them , THANK YOU JINNE
I use coconut milk when I make my peanut butter fudge
Love the instant coffee idea. Thanks
Grits are good to add to any broth type soup as a filler when not just eat as a side dish.
I have about 10 of the large Knorr bouillon chicken, beef, and tomato containers. It adds so much flavor to food!! Flavor is going to be so important when SHTF happens and we end up with food burn out.
Last fall, I found drink mixes on clearance. I mixed up a glass with ice (it was a treat). Glad to have access to local store clearance bins.
Thanks, Jinne!
That's a great list of Survival foods.👍
TFS HC, take care & keep really busy everyone. ❤🙂🐶
Thanks Jinne
Thanks for this great list of food and the many uses and how they can be stored. Definitely some items that I never thought of. It's always good to have long term foods in your pantry and to be prepared for the long haul!!
Jinne, great list. Do you have a recipe for pemmican (?spelling)? I’ve heard of it, but never tried it. Thank you for all you do.
There is another gal here on ytube that has how to make it. Her name is Krista. I can't think of her channel name. But, she lives in Nashville and she is kinda of a citified homesteader. Great vids though.
You can find a recipe for pretty much anything on Google. Just type in ...recipe for...too easy
Dulse flakes are great to add to food, lots of minerals and a bit salty. I also make capsules of moringa and nettle for vitemin boost.
Hi Jinne, I bought water today; I am slowly building up my supply over time. I'm hoping to buy a water purifier before fall. Please find Jinne's recipe for lentil soup. It's the literally best soup I've ever eaten. And I didn't grow up with lentils.
If you look on Homestead corner under water filter, she has a video where you can make them for about $35. The cost comes in mind the filter. But I’ve made it and it’s been very successful. The nieces don’t know if they’re all going to get a water purifier for Christmas. It’s a water filter if it’s one of the globe ones cost about $11 and that’s the biggest expense other than the two pots. It’s a nice thing you can do is you can store in less space!
@@christenascott5280 Wow!!! Thank you so much and I will check that out.
Have you made a video about making pemican as well?
Lentils cook up quicker? Didn't know or think about that. Thanks
Good video, thanks for sharing YAH bless !
Awesome list...now to fill in my holes...
Types of teas lots of them have medicinal properties I think it is something over looked.
Great list!
Excellent video. Thank you
“Cranky ol’ sea hag! OMG ,LMAO. You’re too funny,Jinne. Great list. Hi to family and stay safe.
CANNED MACKEREL
Can you make jello without refrigeration?
It won't set up without refrigeration. If you have ice, use a cup of hot water and a cup of ice. It will thicken a bit but not set completely up.
What if you used ice like the comment below said then put it in a thermos? Maybe set up better? Good luck!
If it's cold outside you can!!😊😊
what about Oat milk? does that last a long time also?
Can you dehydrate bacon? And do you have the recipe for broccoli cheddar soup in a jar? Oh can I dehydrate cheddar cheese?
I have a lot of the foods you mentioned but now I feel worried about pests. How do you store your 25 lb grains and such?
Hi, could you please show us your storeroom with all your pantry things.
Unfortunately, most preppers due to their safety do not show what they have (some do). I'm having people over next month and we will have our pantries completely locked up. The only people that know what we have is our kids. Not even the grand kids because of them being innocent and saying "you should see what grandma and grandpa have!"
White Quinoa is FABULOUS! And you can store in Mylar Bags. High in protein and quick cooking. My dog is Diabetic and White Quinoa is part of her diet
I use coconut milk to provide fat content for mixing with nonfat dry milk. Get the 5 ounce can to use for this and you don't have leftover to store. I dilute my milk quite a lot, but with fat in it, it's good. There is a slight coconut taste, but it's not too notticeable.
You should not use non fat products in times of hunger and stress. You will need the calories
Gyrl!! Did you see King Charles' portrait reveal today??
You gotta see it!
The first thing that came to my mind was that portrait in Ghostbusters 2 when it was coming to life!
I wish the King's artist would explain the meaning.
@@danniemcdonald7675
Yes!!! Me too!
I do see the horns he put on his head in with shadowing though. I honestly not seeing the mirror image people are talking about. I mean l see but..this artist is talented. I think he would have done a better job at it if he did it intentionally. I do think..the horns were intentional.
Expand it and bring it back n forth..You'll see them.
@morningflowerB have you seen the mirror image one of that portrait? That one really got me!
@@MsAudreyDavis
I saw one where she mirrored it 4times. It was interesting.
