- I've been experimenting with a line over wash technique using a fountain pen and water soluble ink. This process was so much fun and worked even better than I expected. I will definitely return to it again.

There is a woman behind the man you painted. She is wearing a hat and a scarf and is looking up.👀👀😇
I came to the comments to see if anyone else saw the lady. 😂
So much to watch and learn. It's fun to see this side of your art. I just watched your Etchr interview from October 18,2023 & left this comment. Personally, watching your portraiture is fascinating, but then the thought of making the attempt to imitate what I see you do makes a switch in my brain go off & doubt & fear of picking up that pencil are the foremost thought, not the excitement & anticipation I feel when I approach a tree or spontaneous landscape.
Anyhow, here is the comment from Etchr. It is a sincere feeling I have when viewing your portraits.
"Steve Mitchell's portraiture is incredible & he truly captures the character & spirit of his sitters. He also gets them "right." They look like the subject without being photo-realistic. His details enhance his subject. So instead of being a painting of a photograph, they have personality and depth that make them recognizable as his work.
Portraiture & landscape are equally important to me, but I find landscaping more relaxing & less threatening. I think there are more expectations when you begin a portrait & that becomes threatening. It has to "look" like the subject & be recognizable to your audience, it has to meet their expectations, too. The onlooker expects a certain level of precision as well as interpretation. Automatically you're constrained by that, even if you try not to be.
In landscape you don't have the preconceived image to fight, the expectations of portraiture, you don't have the same freedom. "
🥰🙏
Whether Steve is painting a spontaneous watercolor or sharing a more technical drawing and/or pen and ink piece, I learn so much watching and listening.
Wow, thank you!
This is so awesome I love it. I wish I could draw like this. Your really good. I don’t know if it’s just me and this might be silly, but I see a face in your wash. The wash towards the upper right side looks like a side view of a face. I see a nose mouth and chin. It’s kinda cool. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me.
I love it when something totally unexpected happens and why not get excited about it! Lovely as always Steve.
I live for these discoveries!
What is the pen brand name and ink that u use for then pen??? Is the ink acid free archival ?
@@kikeheebchinkjigaboo6631 listed in the video description.
Love that there seems to be a lady in a bonnet with a blue ribbon over the man’s left shoulder he is contemplating, perhaps. (Easy to see images in the loose backgrounds.) Such a lovely piece!
You managed to keep his character, I think thats quite hard sometimes, I will be trying your method, in the future. Thankyou
I'm guessing that you need to use a harder lead pencil so that it doesn't smear as much and muddy the watercolors you brush on top? This looks like such a lovely and satisfying technique. Beautiful art.
It's just HB lead. I never really worry about graphite graying my work. There isn't enough of it to matter. I paint fairly muted most of the time. If you use a lot of very soft graphite like 2B or darker then it will gray the colors a bit.
@@mindofwatercolor Thanks! Mine seemed to be smearing too much which I like for earthy colors but not the brighter ones.
Love your channel. A hook up video with Laura G Young watercolor artist would be cool.
this is stunning, all your videos are ❤❤
Awesome Steve, the ink over the wash really pronounced the dimension.
Stunning
This is a really lovely piece. I love this effect too, especially with Noodlers Walnut ink. Also love their wampum. The bleed that it gets is rather magical. Especially in landscapes, the more water you add the more colors appear and there's some granulation with a lot of water.
Oh Steve he’s amazing!! Great job
I’ve been away from my drawing ✍🏾 for over forty years 😞watching you work makes me want to get back to it.😌
Loved this video and your work.😊
Very Nice!
It was interesting to watch the 2 processes become 1. Gave me food for thought, new ideas…
Awesome ! Thanks for sharing this! i love that you shared your colours and used water soluble ink - so clever!
Stunning, as all your work is. I'm always amazed.
Soluble ink can be great for sketching. And there are so many inks.. great sketch.. I like putting in the shapes first to set the colors. Thanks Steve!
Very true!
Watching again! I’m going to start a new line and wash sketchbook tomorrow. Hot press sketchbook from Etchr. Wish me luck!
Awesome, will do!
Love, love, love this!! I have been doing more and more ink and wash work... just love the combo of the tightness with the looseness of the color!
I've been doing a similar process with line and paint for some time now. I think it does make a better finished painting.
Well done.
Very inspiring! It's great to hear your thought process as you work and how you really try to use the ink plus watercolor in creative, expressive ways.
Your Line & Wash Demos are some of my favorites. Amazing! Thank you for your generous sharing.
Well done Steve. You should be proud of that painting. It is beautiful. Love it as well. I so enjoyed watching the process. Thank you
I love this! Thank you for sharing. Your artistry is just incredible. Thank you for producing these videos.
Have you considered talking to the people in Old Williamsburg about selling prints of your art in their shops? You've done several images of this man, as well as the young man with the oxen and cart and also the woman with the bonnet. I can see visitors wanting to take home your beautiful art to help them remember their visit.
Love how this turned out. That red black ink is a really nice color too. I've been stuck in the rut of using mainly black ink or very occasionally blue or sepia pens but that red black is lovely
Love this! Would love to see a Star Wars painting with this technique. 😁
Steve… your portraits are just stunning!! This technique is beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing this piece with us!
Oh wow that’s something that I really haven’t thought of. Line over the wash instead of under. Definitely give a wonderful effect & looks like a great technique to use. Ahhh I like the Etchr Mirror too. Been thinking 🤔 about getting one of those soon. Thanks for sharing this wonderful fun video!
Wow. What a spectacular result. I love it. Looking forward to other examples. Thank you.
What an interesting process. It turned out great!
WOW! Just WOW! ❤
I lost interest for painting for a while since I lost 3 fingers,I have been practicing recently and getting better.loved the video, awesome.❤
Very nice Steve, you make it look so easy! I was drawn to this portrait because it SO reminds me of a man I used to know, gone now but thank you for bringing Ed back to me, and I will try to do that portrait style!
Very nice..
This is very interesting. Beautiful and inspiring. Thank you!
Perfect for Inktober! Thank you!
What a wonderful demo! I plan to try your approach with my Tuesday live sketch session.
Fabulous Steve! 🥁👍🙏🏻
Looks good, thanks for sharing.
Really fantastic effect! I can't wait to try something similar!
Loved the result! 💯😍
LOVE this. So glad you enjoyed it as I'd love to see more like this. Also, loved seeing you go back and forth, especially the way you were hopping around the drawing, adding small touches evenly throughout the whole face. I tend to get detailed in one area too quickly which limits you later. It was interesting to see how you add small levels of detail overall, then doing another slight pass, then another, so the whole drawing gradually got done evenly. Does that make sense? Anyway, great piece, very helpful.
Love this! I'm also a big fan of the TWSBI Swipe. I have most of the ones produced. I'm sure you are familiar with this, but, DeAtrementis Document Ink is waterproof and comes in many colors. There's a red-gray, although that wouldn't help your ink wash. I love Noodler's as well. Lexington Gray is my go-to waterproof black since it's dark.
I have a pen filled with Lexington Gray and love it. In fact I did a video a little while back with that ink in a landscape.
Absolutely beautiful!
Love the process; it turned out great!
Great demo❤
Incredible!
Steve, that is an absolutely wonderful piece. I wonder what your thoughts are between a fountain pen and dip pen? I recently watched someone in the UK do a piece using an iron wood dip pen and they laid the ink down first and then did washes over it. I had thought that ink would have blended like yours did but it was obviously not water solution like yours. Again, an absolutely wonderful piece Steve. Thank you for sharing your talents.
Pluses and minuses to both. Dip pens are most flexible as to what ink you can put through them. You can even put gouache through the nibs. Fountain pens are limited in what ink you can use. There are permanent inks but most FP inks are water soluble. FPs are of course easier to use in the field.
Stunning, thank you
I love this. 😊
Stunning!😊👍🏼
love it!
This was so interesting, thank you
Fantastic!
I haven’t tried that particular flavor of ink but I like it. Lately I have been doing mostly colored charcoal and wc and getting some WIPs done. I noticed something about your painting and that is if you look to the man’s upper left ( our right) past the glasses there is a side portrait of a young man. Perhaps it might have been interesting as a younger version of himself or even a younger woman,it wouldn’t take much perhaps to lighten it up across the bridge of the nose and use a bit of wc. Steve that was a two-fer😊😂
Interesting !! Ty. I have a suggestion for you, since you love line and wash. If you love watercolor over graphite look, then perhaps you should try the Inktense outliner pencil. It stays put when it's washed by water. If you need darker lines, you can dip tip of pencil in water or draw over wet paper, and allow to dry just a little bit before washing. Inktense pencils are awesome for line and wash when you want color. Hope you give it a go. 😊
At some point I probably will. I've had a set for a couple years.
Gorgeous as always. I like how the watercolour wash looks like a person sneezing to the right of his head 😂❤
I’m watching this at 1am and it has inspired me to create so much that I had to get up immediately , regardless of the hour. 😊 lol
Looks like Monet!!
Hey Steve i see do a lot of landscapes and some portraits, the things i have not seen you done is cartoony, or figure drawing, do you not prefer those style?
I don’t do cartoons but I occasionally do figures. Most viewers prefer landscape.
@@mindofwatercolor my art style is very heavily cartoony, then again i was not traditionally educated in art. i am so thankful for channels like yours that gives the traditional, classroom feel without being too classroom or structured. thank you
You could always send the drawing through your printer.
👍
I hope this isn’t a dumb question: are water soluble and water based ink the same? I love using juicy, water soluble ink then applying water to get impressionistic effect and tones . My newest favorite is Elegant Writer pens but I’m wondering if there are other pens with similar qualities in different colors . I’ve searched a lot and find a lot of water based inks but not sure they have the qualities I’m hoping for.
What paper did you use ?
Everything is in the description.
Do you need a model release to do these?
Nope. Not gonna sell anything with the image anyway.
What is “esamia”? I cannot find a link anywhere.
Don't know what you mean. Are you referring to the Etchr Mirror? The device I transferred the drawing with? There is a link.
Yes. Thank you. I appreciate your timely response and of course, your wonderful artwork. Cheers.
