    I actually made my own ink from pecan hulls just to try it out. I sketched the tree that produced the nuts and used a dip pen carved from a branch from the tree. It was actually fun and turned out quite well with a nice brown/sepia color. This makes me want to try it again!

      I never thought of using pecans. I have two trees, but the squirrels always take a single bite of the nuts and throw them on the ground before they fall. This would be a great use for otherwise ruined nuts, and no one will care if there's a little squirrel spit in the ink well. :)

    Thank you for sharing your sketching in real time. I don't mind the sped up parts, but it's helpful to see how carefully and precisely your sketches are done. Most RUclips artists speed up all of their drawings. As a learner, I get frustrated when my sketches don't come out because I'm trying to keep up with a much faster speed than what is actually happening!

  • @GenWivern2

    I like that, and your penholders look good too. The terminology might be different in the US, but there's an old school wood stain sold here in the UK as Vandyke crystals, which is made from walnut hulls. Just dissolve in water: a teaspoonful makes a 2oz bottle of ink roughly speaking, and it's very good indeed, not to say ridiculously cheap.

    I do not have a favorite walnut ink. I do have Black Walnut trees in my backyard that produce lots of nuts & I have been wanting to attempt to make my own walnut ink eventually. This is definitely another one of your great tree sketches that I always enjoy watching you do. This was very interesting and inspirational for me. I will be continuing with this year’s Inktober! Thanks for sharing this wonderful video with us!

      Hi Colleen ! Plenty of Easy walnut ink DIY on YT! Now should be the perfect time (while weather is nice) to gather up the nuts, enjoy the outdoors and fresh air? Let us know please how you ink making turns out!! Why put it off? You might be happily surprised! Maybe you can bring along a friend or family to join in! Just make sure to wear rubber type gloves to protect your hands from getting deeply stained! About like Henna stain..

    Hi Steve, your drawing turned out so nicely! If you don’t mind a suggestion from an old calligrapher, all metal nibs come with an oil coating. If you clean that off,the nib will hold more ink and the ink will flow better. You can clean the nib with toothpaste or soaking in that brand name blue glass cleaner. Many artists flame the nib with a lighter, but that can distemper the metal and make it brittle. In a pinch, you can put the nib in your mouth as saliva is a great degreaser, but be careful. Poking yourself with a sharp nib is quite painful!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  9 месяцев назад

      Yes, thanks. I'm actually pretty familiar with cleaning a nib but you had several good tips. I think the main problem here was how watery it was. A nib that works fine with ink might not with a watery substance. I typically use the cleaner method. Even when clean a nib can be too slick depending on the chrome coating. Zebra G nibs have a very slick chrome coating. I've even used fine sandpaper lightly on the inside. I never use a flame anymore. It can damage the nib as you said.

    Hey Steve we have the same office chair. Please let me know when you sell some pens as I want one. Especially if you can make to hold the kakimori nib. Do you/or are you thinking of ever doing any obliques? Also a couple of lovely writing pens is the Monteverde Anniversary if you can find anymore. Got my last one at pen boutique. Also fountain pen revelation has some wonderful pen they make and are just the best to work with. Have you tried the Kakimori nibs? I like the brass better than the steel, but Golly they hold so much ink and the line variation is amazing stlartsupplies has the best prices and again a great company to do business with. So love your videos. You and Paul Clark are my favorite artists. Are you going to make a book. Bet it would sell right out as I would sure need one. Paul's book is fantastic. Good bless and please pray for Israel.

    I love your videos..probably on third watch for them all. But I have one suggestion that would enhance viewer experience......lower camera a LOT so we can see close up what you are doing. most videos...maybe 30% of screen is the work. We don't need to see pallet nor lots of white around paper. Thx for listening...and hope you'll give it a try.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for the tip and the views, but I get constant complaints from viewers to see my palette so it's a compromise. I try to vary the viewing distance. Where you view also matters. Viewing on mobile devices will always seem too small. Viewing RUclips on TV has become very popular, so that is what I usually edit for. 😊
