Music like this is why I became a composer. The thing I love most about music is that it transcends language, culture, race, politics, religion and everything else. It strips all that stuff away and leaves you with a universal language of the heart and soul that anyone from any time, age or background can understand and relate to. I may never make a lot of money from my music, but I'm going to have a darn good time doing what I love and trying to move people.
i compose too, but only for myself. Not a single person has ever heard a single bar of my music. I usually do mostly full orchestra stuff, but they are too dark... just like Thomas Newman is often. I also draw inspiration from James Newton Howard, if have to be honest. He's a wonderful composer.
My Mom died 10 years ago today. I think of her when I look at my children, I see her in my sons. I wish so much she had been here to watch them grow. She'll be in my heart always, just as I was in hers. She was a great Mom and she loved me very much.
My mother died 17 years ago today. I see her face in my children too, and I hear the little expressions she would use said by the children, now adults, too. I miss her every day. It doesn’t get better, but mercifully you do learn to live without her.
+J.E. -- I know exactly what you mean. There are moments in life when the full depth of our connection with something transcendentally meaningful becomes so obvious that it shatters whatever defenses we may have in place. I believe that is the power of great art. Consider yourself fortunate that you know all this.
I remember as a child I was in my room and my dad was in the living room watching American Beauty, and I heard this music during the plastic bag scene and I immediately ran to the living room and sat transfixed listening to it. It still transfixes me to this day!
Actually this piece can be heard at the very end of the movie. But yes, it contains motifs from the Plastic Bag scene. But I like this one more. This is my favorite of all Thomas Newman compositions.
This is a masterpiece. There was a period in my life where I thought I was lost beyond recognition, but this truly phenominal piece of music helped me gain clarity of thought. I owe Thomas Newman my sanity. Beautiful.
When I am thinking of the past, I listen to this song. It reminds me of how far I have come and how far I have yet to go. It reminds me of the feel of the wind in my face and the comfort of my car as I drive without a care in the world. Those seemingly insignificant moments when you're walking and you see the beauty of life and realize how much you appreciate it. I say this song is the embodiment of life itself in most ways. It can force you to imagine and reminisce like no other in extremely high detail. I will never be able to forget a piece like this.
Jay Jones Incredibly well said. Such a worthy description of art in its most pure form. Life is so simple when its perceived outside of time, and we forget that as we get caught up in all the apparently important events and experiences that take away from the subtle beauty that is observed in our world that should be cherished, but is instead lost in the meaningless distractions we deem meaningful. As you said, this song typifies such beautiful moments that seem insignificant at the time but are cherished and embedded within our memories.
"I had always heard your entire life flashes in front of your eyes the second before you die. First of all, that one second isn't a second at all, it stretches on forever, like an ocean of time... For me, it was lying on my back at Boy Scout camp, watching falling stars... And yellow leaves, from the maple trees, that lined our street... Or my grandmother's hands, and the way her skin seemed like paper... And the first time I saw my cousin Tony's brand new Firebird... And Janie... And Janie... And... Carolyn. I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me... but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst... And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life... You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry... you will someday."
I want to here this piece when I am dying. There is no other music like this. This is so many memories and sad episodes of my life put into 4 minute video. But so many joyful moments too. And for me to relive all those days keeps me still and shocked. I adore it. I have no words to describe this. It isn't possible. I just hope all people can listen to this the same why I do. With awe and grace.
Grace Howard, I share your love and reverence for this music. True, words fail, in describing the effect this has. The closest I can come in describing it, for myself, is that it sloughs off old, dead hurts, and restores the body and soul with hope and healing love.
FINALLY I FOUND IT ! I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS SONG SINCE I WAS A KID ! I asked everywhere, I tried to find it, but it was just a memory. Just a few notes, and this song brings back so many memories. I'm just... happy.
I was listening to this while i was sitting outside my childhood home i hadn't been back to in 15 years, and suddenly i was a child again with no worries and i could hear sirens because the people who now live in the home called the cops.
Each year since 2007 I visit this video. Year by year... same pure sadness, pure sad pleasure in reading there words on video over there. I hope @diana you are happy right now
@@aufzurwahrheit So true for me! :) After I found Thomas Newman, shortly after that I found Jeremy Soule. Amazing music, makes me a bit anxiously sad, but in a very grateful way. Their music makes me incredibly grateful
here i was doing math when this song came on.. i just burst into tears, never before has a song brought to single tear to my eye. This is the most beautiful song I can name.
I've always been drawn to music that is sad, but it's the only music that elevates my spirit and keeps me moving on. It's a paradox that something sad can make me ...unsad. Not happy but just not so dreadfully empty.
this song brings me to a place, that no man could ever bring me to. my heart is lifted, my ears are open, and I'm floating on a dream that anything is possible, and to achieve that dream I have t o live like that dream is already a reality. there is much beauty in this song
i honestly think that this is truly beautiful music. it makes me feel relaxed and helps me sleep sometimes. this music makes me picture the ocean and grasses, trees, sunset, and just so much others. Truly amazing. This is my favorite of all of his compositions.

Lucas DiCiano in your mind, be like Mozart listening to Allegri's Miserere - you miserable piece of garbage - notate that mother from the darkest recesses of your glorious mind
This song is about time, the one force in nature that we really have no control over. It gives me urgency, the pure pleasure knowing that no matter what happens I have a time limit and I can no longer keep pretending. Be somebody. Or be nobody. You have one chance. Do something with it.
This song is such a deep and emotional song which has many meanings for me. It reminds me of the feeling of lonliness and loss I felt when my father died last year. As much as this song lets me feel this, it also lets me feel hope. I never wanted anything bad to happen to me in my life, not many people do, but this song makes me feel as though through everything bad there is always hope, we all just need to have a little faith. I love you dad, r.i.p xx
This song... strikes something in me so deep... it moves me and ignites my mind to dream again... to imagine that anything is possible...creating in parallel, an ever changing sorrow that attaches itself to all of human existence. Hopelessness accompanied with hope... sorrow holding hands with happiness... and dreams dancing among fate. This is the song of life.
No words. Just sounds. Yet it evokes a different emotional response in everybody. Just look at the comments. Nostalgia, relationships, happy memories and even regret. There is a definite healing power in this kind of music. It forces us to feel things we thought we forgot, reminds us of ourselves. Beautiful.
A BIG hug for you. A large part of my life was like that, but I pushed through somehow, and afterwards I realised that I became a better and stronger person. I also learnt things about myself I never thought I was capable of. I hope that you will manage and become a lot stronger too...
I have nothing but respect and admiration for you to put this out there... As sappy and repeated as it may be, she hasn't left you... she's with you everyday because you hold onto her in your heart, take solace in the fact please, and don't think only of the times you miss her now, but cherish the time you had and the joy you shared, which I'd guess you already do. Godspeed to you, and thank you again for your honesty.
i'm 15 but you can be sad or happy, no matter what age you are. My past year has been hard, my dad got cancer and he was about to die... in addiction, a lot of my so called "friends" in that hard time diseappeared... Luckily, now things are getting better, but I will never forget how sad it was that time.
With so many comments about how this makes people feel happy, of how loved ones are dear to them and/or shall be missed, I can surely not be the only one. For this song brings me no comfort, only the feeling of loneliness, which can not be healed by the nostalgia of childdhood. If anything, it reinforces the feeling of abandonment, and yet consoles almost simulataneously. It is for that reason also, I can udnerstand why people can relate this song to that of the show, House.

SANDRA Nang pretty much

it was a strange movie but the soundtrack is one of the best

Try not to think of the past to much, Whatever you feel in this moment is a gift and you must cherish it, that is why they call it the present.

It is ridiculous how much emotion is in this song with no vocals at all. Incredible.
