    • @goldenknight578
      @goldenknight578 2 года назад +3

      We still have 17-1/2 missions before Rick's caught up. (The half mission is because of a two-parter where one of the missions is down due to bugs.) Given that he's been breaking the missions up into two or more episodes, releasing one episode per week comes to about 9 months before he's caught up. I expect at least 2 new missions release by then with another around the corner.

    It turns out that Doctor Who and Star Trek are in the same universe so we DO have a tenth planet in the solar system. It's where the Cybermen.. I mean, Borg, come from. You see it all makes sense... I really wish the writing was better. Did no one look up what an AU actually is?

  • @Werezilla

    Honestly Starbase 1 being in a location that doesn't make sense with some saying it contradicts lore...sounds like typical Star Trek. I don't know why everyone's so mad, inconsistency is kind of Star Trek's thing. Think they'd be used to it by now.

      you could always head-cannon that by this era 1au is Sun to Jupiter, not earth to the sun... (Jupiter space-dock being the main base of Starfleet, it would make a degree of sense... not sure if 1AU is ever specified to be the current astronomical unit in universe)
      then again,
      I like the idea it is around the 10th planet (or whatever number the predicted gas giant will be)...
      good location to be on the outer perimeter as a kind of sentinel...
      makes sense to have a port there.

    • @thomashong2938

      Starbase 1 is supposedly 100 AU from the sun. That’s where the Kuiper Belt is. The VFX/ SFX people working for the show screwed up big time. They weren’t supposed to have the station near Earth or another M class planet. I guess somebody confused Starbase 1 with the orbital office complex above Earth in Star Trek The Motion Picture. They look pretty similar to each other.

    Not unless we discovered a ninth prior to the Disco era because we no longer count Pluto as an official planet. One reason being that we've recently discovered larger objects than Pluto.

    Played the episode yesterday with my 25. C. Captain. I appreciate that we can play this missions regerdless of which century our captains start but i would have loved a more fitting approch to it. Like forcing you to use a ship of the era. Or slightly chnaging some dialog voice and on screen. Felt incredibly weird to be called from admiral to admiral to accept orders from higher personal. Also again J'Ula and her plott armor. I like discovery amd what it brought to the ST fable but honestly this storyline shows why Earth would have fallen in days...

  • @redshirt0479
    @redshirt0479 2 года назад +2

    Maybe I heard it differently, but I processed it as Starbase 1 being about 100 AU from Discovery's position rather than being 100 AU from Earth.
    Either that or we could just use the fact that in conversation people are prone to exaggeration. Like saying that there was an accident "in your own backyard" even if it happened halfway across your home country.
    Also that line about your Britishness is pure gold.
    As an aside, I don't really view this as retconning. At least not in the normal sense.
    It is expanding on an era that was previously unexplored in canon and was between two bits of canon materials. Retconning, traditionally, would be taking a known event and recontextualizing it in a way that was clearly not intended and completely changes the meaning. For example the (thankfully) noncanon Section 31 novels did that quite a bit by faking the deaths of a lot of characters, turning some mentioned events into false flag operations, etc.

      Stamets said Starbase 1 was 100 AU from Earth which means it was 101 AU from the sun. And he said that it was 1 light year away from Discovery’s position. 1 light year= 63241 AU.

    Yeah, destroying those 4 Nimitzes seems pretty wasteful... I mean, set up remote detonation and if Klingons start sniffing around, let them get close. Or, you know, tow them close to a defensive station. (I mean, that admiral thinks STARFLEET can give up four ships, when Earth is under direct assault? Jeebus, park them in pairs and let SCE do their magic and I'm sure you'd have a pair of functional Nimitzes in an hour.)

    Planet Nine, if it exists, has a perihelion (closest approach to Sol) of at least 270 AU, which is considerably further than 100. However its orbital period within the range of 7-15k years makes it effectively stationary relative to Sol and other stars on the timescales of most sci-fi, which might be useful for writers unwilling to comprehend orbital mechanics in order to write about space travel.
    Of course this makes it impossible for the planet to sustain a M-class surface without massive and constant artificial heating. This compounds its mass of 5-8 Earth masses and presumably correspondingly high surface gravity to make it a rather unappealing candidate for human colonisation. This is the sort of thing that breaks my immersion even when I especially suspend my disbelief for extra soft sci-fi like Trek.

    Such a planet would have an orbit quite a significant distance beyond the orbit of Pluto. At that distance, our sun would look like any other star, just a little bit brighter.
    This planet looks to be at approximately 1 AU from its sun, assuming the sun is the same size as our own.

    If I am being honest I am not a big fan of the overall storyline when it comes to the Discovery tie-in and a big part of that is J'ula's character "arc". I do not know exactly what happened but it feels like either something happened behind the scenes that made them change the direction she was going or it is simply one of the most pathetic attempts to pull a Zuko I have seen

    ... if women can't be star fleet captians, but also they can. How can they be admirals? Them TOS DIS inconsistencies amirite??

      Paramount has retconned that bit. And they were right to do so. TOS was a 60s era show. No female captains, generals or admirals back then. The situation is very different now in the 2020s. The studio is not going to depict a Federation/Earth future where there are no female captains and admirals in Starfleet. Christopher Pike is not going to have the same attitude toward female officers in DSC and SNW that he had in TOS’s The Cage pilot.
