Awesome song! Tony Martin-era Sabbath is so underrated, it deserves way more love. "Headless Cross" is actually one of my fave Sabbath albums.

Imo I think Headless Cross would have been a commercial success if they called themselves something else and not Black Sabbath. Tony Martin had the perfect voice for that era.

Interesting fact about this video at the time Black Sabbath had no bass player so they grabbed a guy off the street and paid him to play in the video

Tony Martin is easily the most underrated vocalist in the history of Black Sabbath, despite having been on more albums than Dio (only Ozzy recorded more albums with the band). I would recommend the songs "Headless Cross," "Valhalla," and "Anno Mundi" for more of the Tony Martin era.
Black Sabbath had several incredible vocalists besides Ozzy and Dio. Two more singers who each appeared briefly in Black Sabbath are Ian Gillan and Glenn Hughes (both formerly of Deep Purple). There were also something like 5 or 6 vocalists that did demo versions of the album the "The Shining" is taken from, in addition to vocalist Ray Gillen (most notably of the band Badlands) who recorded the entire album before leaving the band prior to its release (Tony Martin eventually was chosen as his replacement.)
    God bless!!

The original vocalist for this song and the rest of the album, "Eternal Idol", is Ray Gillen. Tony Martin rerecorded the vocals after Ray was let go. Some years later there was a release of the album with the orginal vocalist Ray Gillen, probably best known as the singer for Badlands.

When Black Sabbath started the recording the bass player was Dave Spitz and the drummer was Eric Singer. Actually the bass on the album were done by Bob Daisley. According to Daisley Ray Gillen were struggling with the lyrics and the management didn't pay him or the rest of the band so Gillen left. Tony Martin then joined as the vocalist. Singer left just after the recordings to join Gary Moore's touring band alongside Bob Daisley. After the recordings Dave Spitz returned with drummer Bev Bevan (ELO). They left again after they were booked to play South Africa because of apartheid. On the tour the bass was played by keyboard player Geoff Nicholls before they hired Jo Burt. In this video the drums are played by Terry Chimes (The Clash, Hanoi Rocks, Cherry Bombz a.o) and a guy that according to singer Tony Martin was dragged of the street to pose as a bass player. They never saw him again. In 2010 the album was released as a deluxe edition. Disc 2 had the original recordings by Ray Gillen.
If you want to see something with Ray Gillen live. Search RUclips for Black Sabbath Ray Gillen Live. There are something from 1986

I think Dave Spitz and Eric Singer joining the band helped split up Tony Iommi and Lita Ford as she'd "lent" him Dave and Eric from her band to get this album recorded and the original Ray Gillen tour of the Eternal Idol and they ended up wanting to carry on with Sabbath.

The IRS years are with Tony Martin as singer. The bunch of albums from "Headless Cross" (1989) and "Forbidden" (1995) will be released this year completely remastered. This song is from "The Eternal Idol" (1987) which isn't involved in the re-release-box. Another great tune from this record is the title track "The Eternal Idol". Try it out.

Yeah, Tony Martin era is all but ignored by reactors, which is a shame, he was on more albums of theirs than any others lead vocalist they had other than Ozzy. When they were at their best with Tony they could bring it, for me the entire Tyr album is a killer, try Valhalla from it for a great banger. Iommi is always the king of riffs no matter who is singing for him. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

This came off "The Eternal Idol" in 1987. Tony Martin sang with Sabbath from 1987-1990 and again from 1993-97. He has guested on a lot of albums, and is still active as a solo performer. His most recent release "Thorns" is solid, but for his prime, I'd say listen to Sabbath's "Headless Cross" or "Tyr" albums to see what he could do. He recorded the vocals for "The Eternal Idol" in a week, basically copying previous singer Ray Gillen's vocal lines, so the album could finally be released. For the film clip, the bassist was literally brought in off the street to mime Bob Daisley's parts, and the drummer is Terry Chimes, best known for his work with The Clash. The drums on the original song were by Eric Singer, who is best known for his work with Alice Cooper and Kiss. Guitars by Tony Iommi, and keyboards by Geoff Nicholls, the only two constant members of Sabbath from 1979-2004.

Ronnie James Dio was a second Black Sabbath’s singer, I can’t believe you didn’t know that. The irony is that Ozzy was the worst Black Sabbath’s singer, but with Ozzy on vocals they had most success, with Ozzy on vocals it was the golden era of Black Sabbath.

The usa have been deprived of Toni Martin era Black Sabbath albums thnks to Ozzy manegement ( sharon ). black Sabbath had also Ian gillan of Deep Purple as singer for one album and tour in 1984, and Glen Hughes in 1985. Ray Gillen hav also been singer

Best singer Black Sabbath had, technically.. he could do an "Ozzy"and a "Dio" And kept his own aswell.. sung songs no one of the previous one sung.. Dio was in Black Sabbath 3 times, Ozzy two times, no one dared touch Toni Martin songs.. Headless Cross 1989 album, just as a monolith that Heaven and Hell is, only thing..Sharon as manager of Ozzy ( holding half of Black Sabbath's rights) prevented the Toni Martin era albums to be released in the USA....
Bron Again album was with Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan, their "Marmite"album..you love it, or you hate it..
Ozzy ISN"T Black Sabbath... ..neiher is Ian Gillan, Ray Gillen, Glen Hughes or Ronnie James Dio........Toni Iommi is
