Dashingly daunting Dasha reacts to this daring depiction of a devious desperado dueling a deplorable dictatorship. Derailing their demoralizing debauchery by deploying destruction and demolition.
During this destructive downfall driven by deranged devotion he discovers this dumbfounded though driven dame. Due to her disarming demeanor this doe-eyed damsel defeats his dense defenses. Drowning in dearness and developing as a dynamic, deadly and devout duo.
Duly deploying his disturbing design, driving to the dethroning of a debased, dishonorable domination and the definite death of the deformed disputant.

14:16 "Is it meaningless to apologize?"
Oh, _look_ at the character this woman is presenting. She's staring death in the face and her reaction is _remorse,_ not _fear._ She _knows_ who this is and is _remorseful_ for things she has put him through. She's not disgracefully begging him for any kind of imagined antidote in an effort to save her _life._ She's _apologizing_ for what she has done _wrong._ It's almost like her biggest fear, up to this point, has been that she would die _without_ having the chance to apologize.

      She was already feeling remorse.
Notice out of all the players in the Lark Hill conspiracy she was the only one to not have a prominent govmt position in the new order.
She's living a relatively humble life in a pretty boring job dealing with what is more than likely to be people killed by the very govmt that she helped in part to gain power.
She is already doing penance in her own way - and when V came for her it was blessed release from the tortures of her conscience over her actions.
I think V knew this too, he would not have given her the needle in her sleep otherwise.

  • @Yngvarfo
    @Yngvarfo 2 года назад +125

Well, as others have said, "telly" is British slang for "television" or TV.
"Celluloid" is a form of plastic that used to be the main component of film. From there, the word is sometimes used to refer to film in general, whether as the physical film, or as a genre.
The movie is based on the comic book by the same name, written by Alan Moore and drawn by David Lloyd. However, after Moore's bad experiences with previous movies based on his work, "From Hell" and "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," he refused to even have his name on the later adaptations like "Watchmen" or this one. Unfortunately for him, having been published by DC Comics, the film rights were owned by Warner Bros, so he had no say in the matter. Clearly, unlike the previous movies, this was a success, but that has not changed his mind.
The poem "Remember, remember the fifth of November" is said to commemorate the "gunpowder plot" of 1605. The movie was meant to premiere on the 400th anniversary in 2005, but was delayed after the real terrorist acts earlier that year.

@@paulieluppino1856 I don't find the changes that bad to be honest. Makes things a bit more clear for the uninitiated. I am also biased as the movie led me to the book. I do prefer the book by a lot for various reasons. But the movie is not so far off that the sense of what is to be told is still there.
I feel similar for Watchmen. League was simply terrible and From Hell, I am an ignorant, I remember now that it was him that wrote it but never read it....
I guess what I am saying is that the films (V and Watchmen) were good and inspiring enough for someone like my to buy the graphic novels. Watchmen I even went with the Before Watchmen series as well. Ozzy is a hero lmao, but so is Rorschach.

    • @paulieluppino1856
      @paulieluppino1856 2 года назад +5

@@revariox189 Maybe it doesn't look so different on the surface, but you have to go deeper. Moore's writing is never easy to get and requires many readings. I do also got to the comic books thank to the movies, and I'm not saying that Watchmen or V are awful movies, but as adaptation they couldn't be more miss guided.
Watchmen (comic) was a deconstruction of the superhero figure, and the ultimate goal was to put in perspective how pathetic and crazy those character were, and how we as a society will react to them Rorschach was never meant to be admired but despised, and the same with Ozymandias (one is an ultra right wing homicidal maniac, and the other a pure vanity ego-central bastard who think he is the only one that can save us all). The movie, however, glorify them, make them look as an misunderstood hero and a tragic villain respectively (and with the rest of the cast, just about the same kind of treatment, specially with Laurie).
When it comes to V, is a bit more faithful, but also makes the mistake of making clear that V is the hero, while in the comic is never that obvious, and depends on the reader to choose if V is a hero or just a maniac with a personal agenda I understand that some changes are necessary (like making Eve a 28 years old self made woman, instead a 14 years old prostitute) but the comic was intended for the reader to examine his or her own conscience, and ask themselves what's the right thing to do in a situation like that.
At the end of the day, Moore's intention wasn't to lecture us, but to challenge us, and to do so, you have to be willing to face the uglynes. That's why all the movies based on his comics fail, they took away all the ugliness.
I don't know, maybe is just me, my experience with both movies and comics, but any time that I make the comparison, a quote comes to my mind (which I think is from Moore itself): "I made a comic for adults. They made a movie for teenagers".

    • @Klaital1

@@paulieluppino1856 Love that last line. So true and sad. But then again, is America (by extension public at large) really looking for an intelligent movie that also features people that dress up? I doubt it.
As per Roarchach and Ozzy, I see neither as a hero. Just a dedicated person with a plan. Ozzy is as you said too self centered and thinks he is the best human the planet has ever seen (unfortunately he is not wrong, at all).
As per Roarshach, he is literally a broken human being spending his time investigating and solving crimes. Big focus on the broken. I had similar circumstances as a youth so I can appreciaye him doing things I would never have the balls for. He is no hero. He does what he wants. He doesnt care much about the ones he saves. He seems more bent on hurting the guilty then saving the innocent. Which that is a problem of its own....

Guy Fawkes wanted to blow up British Parliament but was caught and broke his neck from a fall from the gallows he was to be hung from. Your grasp of the symbolism and metaphor used in the film was very good. What V did to Evey was harsh but in the same way that the American Navy trains SEALS. The philosopher Friedrich Nietzche said it long ago: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." V cared for Evey and had to prove to her that she had the inner strength to survive.
IMHO, this movie should be broadcast, unedited, without interruption, every November 5th to reinforce to people that "People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people." I watch Russians being interviewed on YT now, and you can see that they fear their government. Canadians were trampled by horses and many now fear their government. In the US. parents advocating for their children have to fear their government. And all of the politicians and media use the same tactics as they did in this movie. We live in dangerous times. The only saving grace is that you cannot kill an idea.

V "LIBERATED" Evey from being the government's faithful believing slave, yes, it was extremely brutal, but he freed her from her government's chains of lies and deceit and "corruption" (crimes)
you also see Evey convey some "abandonment"/emptiness which often comes with such liberation, as both are tied together, abandonment/emptiness is liberation and liberation is abandonment/emptiness, not caring any longer about what happens to you, true freedom/liberation, true abandonment/emptiness, you can do anything, as you no longer care about consequences at all, it's extremely empowering, with nothing holding you back any longer

Also I went through what Eve did in a way. I lived in Poland in 89 when the Berlin Wall fell. We were like maybe 50 or less Americans in Poland, so we were paranoid the crowd could blame foreigners for the fall of the communist government, which IS what happened in China at the same time. We lived like that for 2 weeks indoors. I felt deep shame later as not participating in the protest, but it could be very dangerous. The police did have machine guns 100%. Later I got into art and today protest when possible against wrongs by government, but that fear never leaves like Eve experienced in the film. I also experienced a mass protest in Spain (obviously safer), but the whole crowd rushed the police who had full combat gear like SWAT. The police then rushed the crowd. I was on my mt. bike, so I took off and got the hell out of there. But it was very scary as the police surrounded us on 5-6 sides.

I'm so glad you were moved by this film, it's been my favorite for a long time, I watch it every Nov. 5th which is Guy Fawkes Day in England. It leaves the audience to decide whether V is a terrorist or a freedom fighter. It was very brave to release this just a few years after 9/11 with buildings being destroyed by terrorists.
To me this is a very IMPORTANT film, not just entertainment. It was also PRESCIENT in how it predicted the future, the pandemic, the growth of fascism in the U.S. and in parts of Europe and now the happenings in Ukraine. Valerie's expression of love is very heartfelt and Evey learned that the last inch of ourselves is important not to give it up.
The movie is very dense for a 1st time watch but you are very smart, I think you got the gist of it if not all the plot points. More viewings will make those clearer.
1 thing to point out, the casting of John Hurt as Chancellor Sutler is ironic since he was the victim of Big Brother (played by Richard Burton) in the older film "1984", released in 1984. It's worth a watch, based on the George Orwell novel.

In the UK the film was actually delayed for release, because of the suicide bombings on the London underground - that ending wasn't going to fly after that, so they held it back until the following year before releasing it. Though, something that is perhaps lost now is how much the film contains 'current' references to things like the War on Terror. In 2005 there was a lot of concern about the rolling back of human rights and the increasing use of torture by Western democracies, stuff like that. V For Vendetta will always apply to different times and countries, but some of its commentary was definitely intended to hit home in 2005.

Great and heartfelt reaction to an epic movie, that is sadly far too relevant today all over the world. While it in many ways is a reimagining of The Count of Monte Cristo, it does a great job of being different, while still paying homage to its greatest source of inspiration, after the DC comic that the film is based off of.
Also, Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving both deliver amazing performances. Extra props to Hugo though for pulling off such an iconic performance, despite never showing his face and performing behind a mask the entire time.

This is without a doubt my favorite movie.
You hit on one of the things I love the most about it - it keeps you along with the plot without stopping to wait for you to catch up. There technically is a part where the protagonist explains all his motives and intentions - the V speech - but that's not really there for the first watch because it comes at such a whirling pace... it ends up just showcasing his love of poetry, art, expression, and theatricality. There's no "stop and watch V plan everything out" section. There's no "meet Evey and see her growing up" part. You get enough bits and pieces to know what you need to know, and if you miss them, it doesn't reiterate, doesn't waste another 2 minutes on it. It trusts you to watch the movie, and it trusts itself to proceed with your attention even when you miss a point here and there
Because of this, it leaves you wanting to rewatch it, it manages to build an entire world and history inside of its runtime, it can jump between tension and release without giving that "boring part" of the movie, and it makes you interested to go grab the graphic novel for more background.
In the same vein, they take every chance they get to characterize - especially on introductions - and save an incredible amount of time in the process...
You first see Evey as she's being slightly naughty - violating curfew - but she immediately folds when confronted and detained by the Fingerman. Later, she is blindly confident, walking around in the open as public enemy number two. Everything about her character changes right in front of you
You first meet V fighting government agents and faffing on in an almost Shakesperean way with what reads like a manifesto
The first time you see the Chancellor and the heads of the different departments, it's in the most Big Brothery way imaginable. Prothero is first shown spewing hatred. Next, he's shown watching himself in the shower. Finch's first scene is of him reporting to the Chancellor, being very detail-oriented, even more aware of the seriousness of what V has started, and actually being impressed with V, etc. etc.
And most importantly, its message is just as relevant today as it ever was. I wish you'd watched this at a time when it would have been less... personal. But then again, maybe it will have meant that much more to you.
    Some odd bits...
    - Telly: British slang, short for television.
    - Celluloid: Old film stock.
    - "He's a very interesting person." You have no idea. The Gordon Deitrich character... well that's just Stephen Fry playing himself. He's an absolute national treasure and totally deserving of the love and respect he's garnered
    - "He's giving her the choice?" Yes. After creating Evey in his own image, he realized that she is the V of tomorrow. The dominos stopped falling because they hit one last one that was still stood up. V realized that's the Vs of tomorrow, and it should be up to them. Hence, he puts that domino on the train above the lever
    - "He was living for this..." Evey comments earlier that The Count of Monte Cristo (V's favorite movie) made her sad because the man cared more about revenge than he did about the love interest. V does the same
    - "He is a superhero isn't he?" Yesno. As you obviously saw later, he's not really superhuman in the sense of a Marvel movie. However, earlier when Delia is talking about the virus that they were testing in Larkhill, she mentions that the man in room five has an unusual response to it. Whereas the other test subjects keep dying, his body incorporated it in some way, gaining some measure of speed, reflex, and strength just beyond the threshold of normal human beings. He is by no means Hulk, the Flash, or Superman though
    - Lastly, I'm extremely happy we got some background puppy time at the end 😍

This has been a favourite story of mine since it appeared month by month as a black and white comic strip in a British comic called "Warrior" - the run ended midway through the story on the cliffhanger moment of Evey discovering that V had been the person who'd imprisoned her. His "Welcome home" speechbubble was the last part of the story we saw for years until DC Comics bought the rights to reprint and continue it. It was a long wait for the end of the story, but well worth it!
The original story differed in places but this is one of the few films made of Alan Moore's wonderful comic writing that actually didn't mangle things too much. If you get a chance to see the original graphic novel collection you would probably enjoy it a lot.

One thing I love about this movie is the moral dilemma of V’s torture of Evey and seeing the different reactions to the reveal. Some are horrified and think that there is absolutely no merit to what he did to her, no matter what his intentions were, whereas others are more understanding that this is not a normal situation with a normal man. In some ways it is unfortunate that she crossed paths with V, never knowing the pain and suffering he would cause her in spite of saving her life. I truly believe that V fixated on Evey the way he did because he wanted to free her from the fears that the Norsefire Party ingrained into her psyche. Had he not intervened, everything he did would still have have happened to her, the only difference is, she would get a bullet instead of an epiphany. There was no way her could bring her back to the Shadow Gallery for the rest of the year knowing how afraid she was of him. The whole situation is a mess.

@L2F Sim Training It's a difficult problem. Companies are usually held in check by the government which is the law and by the people and market forces if they can sell a product or not. When companies are the government they are the law, so laws no longer matter. The people don't matter either as they can just bail themselves out making billions or trillions off the harm they do to everyone.
How did it happen? They got there by the very regulation that was supposed to contain them instead just making it harder for anyone to compete. The plus side for the company is that guaranteed "free" money from the taxpayer. Then they can always foot the bill or have government grant them a pass or cash or steal and ignore the governments laws. When Congress itself is owning those stock of course they gonna make their own business better and keep everyone else out. Another huge problem is politicians sometimes just refuse to enforcement the law. What even is the point of a law then? If disagreeable, change it. Instead they trying to break the very system they cheated to make their money so nobody else could follow even by honest means. If you or I did the deed we'd be in jail for the same crimes they pull on the daily.
Well written warning about the bankers and corporations same as the warnings about government since our founding. Is it any wonder government got into education to make sure people stay ignorant? You can only say we let it happen as somebody said 'trust us' and it was accepted as the truth. lol

The only problem is, I don't know enough about construction to build it -- and secret passageways! -- by myself. Unfortunately, the pharaohs' solution of killing the builders afterwards would probably be a bad idea. 😉😝🙈

I'm glad you checked it out I was very pleasantly surprised with the movie when it first came out
You should definitely check out the original source material graphic novel that this is based. V for vendetta was the child of Alan Moore and David Lloyd they're the ones who created the graphic novel that this is based.
Now Alan Moore(I mean he's created a lot of characters within the industry that really changed the way we think about things.) is known in the industry as one of the greatest comic book writers of all time he's written a lot of very high profile stories. I mean this is one of those type of work that he was really talking about a particular topic and he really nailed it even though personally for me it's not my favorite work of Alan Moore but he definitely was trying to talk about this particular topic. I mean it really did change the industry of comics when he was able to write this and given that freedom to tell the story he wanted to tell.
Definitely when you get the chance you should definitely watch watchmen(now let me just say this real quick Alan Moore has a tendency of a speaking out against the industry because he kind of got screwed in the long run. Because what had happened basically Alan had a deal with DC comics the publisher we're going to give him the rights back to the characters him and his fellow creator of that particular one and no one thought that it was going to be the highest selling graphic novel of all time and winning so many awards in and outside of the industry. That DC kind of didn't honor their side of the bargain and they kind of kept the rights to the characters and to this day he still has a bad blood with DC comics. ( Now DC comics is the guys who published Superman Batman Wonder woman flash Justice League suicide squad you know those characters just to name a few.) I mean his whole feelings about that to this day he still angry and a few other works I mean he also has bad blood with marvel comics because there's a character that he created for them and he can't get the rights back at all and he's mad about that but mostly his bad blood DC comics.) that's another one of his works that was adapted to become a film. Now watchman is going to really be interesting for you to see because it's about superheroes but it's his take on the superhero universe. But it's not the stereotypical superhero universe he's taking a much more mature and really serious take on how a superhero universe would be through his lens and it talks about a lot of stuff which I'm not going to ruin for you but it's really heavy and I hope you do get a chance to see the movie.
And also before I forget if you do get a chance to get more into Alan Moore definitely check out some of his other works that he's working on like the source material stuff that he writes for like DC comics and a few other things outside of the the big two.
Like swamp thing ,League of extraordinary gentlemen, top 10 ,Tom strong, from hell (now that one I don't know if I'm saying the name right but I know that one was adapted for a movie with Johnny Depp you should watch the movie I like the movie The source material I'm very 50/50 about when you wrote that one but I mean that's just how I feel about it I'm not saying it was bad or anything but if you do get a chance to see from hell definitely check that movie out and the original graphic novel) and so many other works that Alan Moore and his fellow creators worked on during his time working for DC comics and a few other companies.

Correct Paul, love how this movie made it the right evangelical ideologies that have become totalitarian when we all know it’s actually the far left wokism that is going full authoritarian. The right won’t enforce its ideals by facist govt force and violence like the left always feared because as part of its religious beliefs (and I don’t mean organized religion, we all know it has its issues) along with the other morals and values the left hates are the value for life and individual freedom. The left will have no problem taking freedom and using violence to achieve its goals when you have no moral center based on belief in something greater than yourself or government.

In the final fight, ironically, their extensive training is what killed those men. When you're taught by any organized military or regulatory force, it's ingrained into you to value shots at center of mass over anything else, because even if they don't penetrate, they WILL do damage. Getting shot ONCE while wearing a bulletproof vest is like getting punched by an MMA fighter in some cases. If anyone but V had been in that spot, they would have been on the ground, the only thing that kept V upright where his ideals. If a single person there had aimed for his head, he would have been dead. In fact, you'll notice Mcreadys last shot was at his head, but the chamber was empty.
