I think Halo 2 is my favorite game in the series since the gameplay was fun, and the story was super good. Although, I’m well aware that there’s various issues with the weapon balancing and the difficulty was badly designed. A lot of the issues and cut ideas Bungie had were later reused/refined in 3. One of the game’s biggest missed opportunities is the fact we never fought human enemies during the Arbiter’s missions. It would’ve added some much needed enemy variety to his repetitive levels, we could’ve truly experienced the Human Covenant War from the perspective of the Covenant, having smart enemies that make you think about encounters would’ve been a great way to show that despite the fact we were losing badly against the Covenant we were still able to largely hold our own in ground engagements through a use of tactics and innovation, and if they were allied with the Sentinels it would’ve been a great way to foreshadow the human Forerunner connection Bungie intended. We also should’ve had Brute allies as a way to show the player what they’ll be like before we fight them, they’d feel more like the Covenant instead of just kind of being there, and it would’ve made their betrayal more impactful if we were just barely fighting alongside them. It’s too bad we didn’t get Halo 2’s original storyboarded ending. I’m not going to spoil it. But, I will say that Truth had a valid reason to kill off the other two hierarchs, and start the Great Schism. He also wanted something very tangible from the Ark’s (later changed to the portal to the Ark in 3) machinery, and we would’ve learned exactly what the Human Covenant War was started to hide. Look up C3Sabertooth’s Halo 2 storyboard animations to see what Bungie originally intended. It’s super interesting. Good video. I’ll be sure to watch your others.
oh my word, i had no idea - i can't get too focused on a franchise at a time but I'll definitely be playing 3 later down the track I actually love your idea that we should've fought human enemies - that would've fit so well and made it more interesting. I think your comment about the brutes would also fit very well... I think i'll keep that in mind. I'm not too keen to jump into the lore yet in case i see any random spoilers for 3 and onwards Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching ❤
You should definitely play 3. It has quite possibly the best campaign in the entire series with it being a natural evolution of what was added in 2, reimplemented features that were cut from CE/2, and added some cool new features like the Scarab battles. Unfortunately, the story was a pretty big step down from what was presented in 2, and we missed out on the AMAZING ending that Bungie had planned. Bungie never intended Halo to be more than just one game, but when it became a breakaway success they knew they had to make a sequel. I’m not going to spoil anything, but I will say that it mostly just spins its wheels for a good chunk of the story, lacks focus, and several of the characters were pretty dumb compared to how they were in 2. Their two best writers Joseph Staten and Jason Jones were gone for most of the game’s development dealing with Halo 2’s INSANE crunch and it really shows. I had a lot of fun playing Halo 3. I just wish there was more substance to the story. Thanks! I’m really glad you like my idea. For whatever bizarre reason a lot of people in the Halo community are weird about having human enemies in Halo. The most common reasons given are “Bungie didn’t want to have the player fighting people to appeal to parents”, “everyone else had boring human enemies”, and that “they’re unbalanced and not very fun to fight”. The first of these makes zero sense when you consider the fact that Halo has infected human enemies that can be dismembered, so the “family friendly” excuse doesn’t work. “Boring human enemies” was never a problem with those other games. The real problem comes from the fact that most of those games was the fact that said human enemies had bad aim where they’d just run at you without thinking, and if they did have good aim the level design was almost never designed around their strengths (Half-Life 2 is a great example of this where the Combine soldiers/overwatch are actually capable of working as a squad to hunt you down. If you put them in a combat arena akin to the ones in FEAR where there’s a bunch of cover and flanking routes you’ll see them making smart decisions. Unfortunately, for most of the game they were just dropped out in the open where they were essentially firing blind). FEAR has human enemies and NOBODY complained about them being “boring”, “uninspired”, or “lacking character” because their ai was just so good. The only argument that has any weight to it is the one about enemies with ballistic weapons being unbalanced and not very fun to fight against. Fortunately, Infinite despite its various flaws proved that enemies armed with ballistics can actually be really fun to fight. You just have to adjust their firing patterns and accuracy. If we had smart enemies that run in and out of cover, have a few guys pepper you from affair while the others try to rush/flank you, and use grenades to flush you out of cover it would’ve been an AMAZING way to change up the normal gameplay. We also should’ve had human enemies in Infinite since the Banished will let anyone join regardless of species (they could’ve had Banished spies sabotage the Infinity and use that as the explanation for why they were so easily able to overrun that ship. Then in my idealized version of the game it would’ve taken place right after the ship was boarded with you trying to regroup the UNSC forces across Zeta Halo. We also could’ve had turncoats who threw in with the Banished to deal with), and we also should’ve had Insurrectionists/Rebels as enemies at some point in the series (343 likes to go on and on about how Spartans were designed to put down human rebellions. But, they sadly haven’t done anything with it. Aside from moments in a few books and the terrible Halo show that thankfully isn’t canon we’ve seen almost nothing about UNSC vs Insurrectionists/Rebels. This is especially weird because it’s instrumental to so much of the lore). More on the topic of the Brutes. Judging by the storyboards it seems like they would’ve had a larger role in 2’s narrative. For one thing instead of the Arbiter killing the Heretic leader you were supposed to have a boss fight where he’d attack you and after the fight he’s laying on the ground mortally wounded. Just then Guilty Spark would appear and before they can reveal the nature of the Rings Tartarus accompanied with several Brutes would show up both kill the Heretic leader and collect Spark before either could say anything (compare that with retail where right before Spark is about to reveal to the Arbiter what exactly the Rings do the Heretic leader opens fire, when he could’ve just waited and gained an ally. The storyboards would’ve filled some other plot holes that were present in retail like there already being some Covenant ships at Delta Halo explaining why there was already a Covenant presence on the Ring, and it would’ve made the Amber Clad have a reason to hide. There were also some weird things that thankfully didn’t make it into the game, like Truth shutting the door of the Forerunner ship behind him where Chief a boss fight with Mercy who’s armed with a wizard staff instead of him being taken out by an Infection Form like in the final game. There was another thing that I’m not entirely sure entirely sure what my thoughts are, like how High Charity’s dome was originally supposed to be transparent. In one hand I REALLY like the design we got in the final game, but having it transparent probably would’ve been the better choice because then for the more open areas we could’ve actually seen the Covenant fleet taring itself apart instead of just having Cortana tell us about it and only seeing a brief glimpse of the chaos in the last cutscene). There was also a part where the Great Schism was supposed to occur before the Arbiter got the Index with the Brutes being enemies far sooner, and I’m not a big fan of that idea because what in retail was better. Something I find interesting is how by their own admission Bungie added the Brute a little too late into Halo 2’s development and because of this they were half baked being hyper aggressive broken bullet sponges that require headshots to take down quickly. In 3 they were basically bootleg Elites due to a combination of the Elites departure from the Covenant leaving the officer role vacant, and then over correcting on their issues in 2. I personally prefer their Halo 2 version over 3’s because having enemies that rush you and go berserk once the rest of the pack is killed radically changes how you play the game. Up until that point you were mostly just dealing with standard Covenant and Flood. ODST gave them shields making them slightly stronger, and the player’s nerfs made them more of a threat. But, they still have most of their Halo 3 issues since ODST was basically a Halo 3 asset flip/expansion pack. You’re welcome. Thanks for making this video. It was entertaining.
@@shreksnow1918 lol man that is quite a lot to get through, I definitely can't say i'm too familiar with the lore and the back story of how the game was made and being a PC Gamer the MCC was really the only chance I've had to play anything beyond CE. @invaliduser_dox do you like unfinished games as per next gen standards? MCC should have been a compilation of all the games, not jammed into one game. Halo 5? WTF is that even?
