ODST is probably one of my favorite Halos because it shows a different side of the Human Covenant War. I really liked all the small details and the presentation that makes you feel like a normal human. Unfortunately, Bungie didn’t go nearly far enough with the gameplay and because of this you don’t actually PLAY like a normal human. Instead we just got diet Halo 3 with the player being able to do most of the things that Chief can, just worse (we even take down a Scarab and in Reach those Spartans avoid them). It should’ve been a tactical shooter with a fully fleshed out stealth system. The “silenced weapons” weren’t actually quiet and would still alert enemies. Stamina was also just a reskinned shield. We also should’ve been able to lean around cover, which was briefly prototyped for 3 before Bungie scrapped it because they didn’t think it fit with the player being a walking tank. Why they didn’t put this feature into ODST where it would’ve fit perfectly is beyond me. We also should’ve been fighting Elites for a good chunk of the game, with Brutes appearing at night and in the last few flashback missions. They didn’t do nearly enough to make the lesser Covenant (Grunts, Jackals, and Drones) feel like your equals/close lessers. As well as the fact that ODST’s Brutes still retained most of their issues from 3 where Bungie turned them into bootleg Elites due to a combination of overcorrecting on them being broken bullet sponges in 2 and trying to make them fit the officer role left vacant when the Elites left the Covenant. If you spawn in Elites they’ll be hostile to the player and Brutes since they’re on team Covenant, while the Brutes are on team Prophets. Based on this I think it’s safe to say that early on Elites were meant to be enemies and we’d be able to see multi faction fighting. It would’ve added in some more enemy variety, made the game more replayable by adding in fights that play out differently every time, and it would’ve really enhanced the story. Just imagine how awesome it would be to experience the Great Schism from the perspective of a normal human. Then they could’ve had your squad use the ensuing chaos as the perfect opportunity to collect Virgil and escape the city. I really enjoyed ODST, but it could’ve been so much more. In fact it should’ve been so much more since they charged a full $60 for this glorified level pack. At least we got Firefight and me and my cousin spent who knows how many hours in that mode. Tower defense/hoard modes are some of my FAVORITE things in games. CoD Zombies, Gears of Wars hoard’ and Firefight are among my favorites.
I definitely agree with a lot of what you said. I didn't realise they charged full price for this though. That's actually kinda disappointing when you consider this isn't technically a full halo game. It could've been a chance for them to really try out new things but I'd have to guess they didn't want to alienate their already established fanbase too much by keeping it the same - which is unfortunate since it could've been something really different. Creativity especially nowadays is often left by the way side on their road to creating new experiences unfortunately
Just finished my first play through, I think it could have used a bigger map, a slum district would have been cool, and a sprint mechanic like Reach has.
Remember this game came out in 2009, and everything shown was pretty close to cutting edge for the time. Map was huge for the time, maps were as intricate as they could without overloading the Xbox 360, and they turned up the enemy count to 11 wherever possible. How that stacks up to modern games (topic being discussed), it's still a pretty large, lots of dynamic enemies who are smart enough to be challenging, and the colors and story are still enjoyable.
@@TheJBerg Unfortunately I can't really speak for the Multiplayer as I'm more of a singleplayer type gamer but to me, it definitely feels like it still holds up. Granted you will be able to tell it's an older title but considering this game is now 15 years old I think it's still an excellent experience! The best part for me was probably the vibes and atmosphere
its 2024 and im still grinding achievements of halo 3 odst on my series x but the xbox 360 version like i don't even play the one on mcc :) nice video btw

I'm keen to get stuck into Halo 3 but I just recently realised that Halo 5 isn't actually on Steam and it's definitely soured my journey of going through all the Halo games.. I'll probably still do get to 3 eventually but it just kinda sucks knowing I won't be able to play 5..
I love the graphical fidelity, sometimes games try too hard to be real, while I do think it could be improved a bit more, games like ODST and Reach are how I like it I also love how much the other ODST’s move when they speak, like they’re implemented with RvB movements ODST checks so many unique boxes for more compared to other games, the atmosphere alone sells it for me but the music is the cherry on the cake
yeah great points, I can't honestly say it's my favourite soundtrack especially with how much impact Halo CE had on me personally but i still really enjoy it and appreciate the work they've done Like it really matches the vibesss
The Scorpion had its turret changed as a separate gun in Halo3 as well as having the Chopper and ATV introduced in that game, that’s why the Scorpion is different here,
i've heard good things and i'm tempted to get back into it but it means i'd have to watch season 1 - and I honestly didn't enjoy it so i don't know if i'll be able to 😅
This game takes place between Halo 2 & 3 correct? I am currently playing the Master Chief collection in chronological order and I am going to finish Halo 2 soon. Should I play this before or after Halo 3?
So my understanding is it takes place in parrallel with "some" of the events of Halo 2 - I believe near the end, you may need to look up exactly where I chose to play it before 3 since if it takes place at the same time as some of the parts of 2 then it felt more correct to me chronologically. Like if you want a proper play through you may need to pause mid way through 2 and then play ODST and then go back to 2 but i'm not 100% sure

halo 3 odest is best cause u no have shields, having shields like spartans do makes it easy. odst a good challange and will always be my top favorite
