Test Your Network Speed On a Mac
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 июн 2024
- macmost.com/e-2698 You can test your network speed on a Mac using speed test websites or a simple Terminal command in macOS Monterey. You can also easily put that Terminal command inside a Shortcut and then easily run a speed test from the Menu Bar any time you wish.

The thing I really like about you Gary, that sets you apart from the other mac channels... you have always been very Mac-Centric. Never change.
I just tried this, it didn't work for me. ( i'm on Catalina )
What I like is that he don’t have an intro that goes on for ages, does not talk for half an hour about speed tests but gets straight to the point
I have two macs. I have a imac 2013 and macbook 2016
A very informative video tutorial today! Thank you, Gary! 👏🏻❤️
Thanks for the shortcut, Gary! Just added to the menu bar. It works perfectly.
That's everything I needed for today !!! thank you so much this, there are tons of video of speed test, but nobody told this!
great tip as usual. Thank YOU!
Informative. Thanks, Gary!
Love this. Thank you.
This is great, added to my MacBook. Thank you 👍
I have to say, You really are brilliant! Thanks for that.
Very useful, thanks
Gary, as always, great presentation, and I use this new shortcut frequently as I have had issues with my ISP, and this is a good way to stay on top of things.
Ha! Nailed it on my Mac mini M1. And I’m an old guy… Thanks Gary!
Every day is a school day!
Thank you!
Thank you!
Gary - thx for the intro to the networkquality command. However, the info on networkquality parameters is incorrect (at least in Ventura 13.1). Running with NO parameters runs the upload and download tests in parallel. Adding -s makes them run sequentially. -v requests verbose output. -h provides command line help.
thank you sir!
Few things your missing. I heard no mention of making sure as to what type router your connected to and if it is 2.4g, 5g, and if the router is b, g, n, ac, class.
Yes Cat6 is the best test, but as many do not wish to spend the about Mac want to the adaptor most Mac users are on wireless.
Also distance plays a huge factor in these tests when doing it over wireless.
I often use Speedtest, both on Macs and mobile devices. One thing to be aware of - Speedtest (and, I think, all the other methods you describe) do use up data! I was in Dubai in Feb 2022 and decided I would use Spreedtest to check the 5G performance, with my (UK spec) iPhone 12 Pro. Result: 877Mbps download, 158Mbps upload. Great result! But it also swallowed up 1.4Gb of data, which given that I was using a visitor's sim with a 6Gb data bundle, was not quite what I wanted....
😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
Other variables are whether you're hardwired or not and how old your WiFi card is. Maybe not an issue for newer Macs. Also, this is Monterey only.
Hi
Great tutorial as usual.
The networkquality -s is giving 'command not found.
Are you using macOS Monterey?
I can't remember if I already said this but, with so many years using the Apple ecosystem I always find something new in your videos! networkquality! Really? Ahahahah!!! Why I didn't know about this??!! I have homebrew and speedtest-cli and now I ask what for! Well, it has its own preferences, ok. Thanks Gary. Really. :)
I think it's a relatively new terminal command. Might have come with zsh. Not sure.
@@brianh2787 yes, it’s only on Monterey
ooo i like that terminal one I, hate the adds on the webpages
My Apple TV is sometimes very snappy playing media from my Mac,and other times very slow to load?Don't know why.
thank you for the tutorial! Is there a command to test the local lan speed? I just installed a NAS on 10G and cannot find a way to double check the speed :)
Could be, but I don't know of one. It may be a function of your router or NAS, not something on your Mac.
More things I didn't know I didn't know (but now do know).
Thanks Gary. Should there be any difference between terminal and website?
No, because they’re both going through the same processes.
Not really. But each time you do it it will vary no matter which one you use.
Thanks bunces
What is an acceptable range and if testing shows it's below the range, any point in contacting the provider?
What amount of bandwidth are you paying for? It should be close to that. If not, then yes, of course, contact your provider if you are paying for something and not getting it.
I got this done but is was extremely difficult to follow. I had to stop and replay many many times before I was able to make it happen. Love having the shortcut now but a real pain making it happen.
Where can I get the Shortcuts App? Is this an internal app on the Mac or have I download it from the Appstore?
It comes with macOS Monterey.
Well, another very good tutorial, but .... Some routers (or modems) like my mesh network has a speed test feature. I assume the firmware runs in the mode that is ethernet connected to my modem. This is theory avoids "impedance" introduced by the home network, including the wifi .... just sayin'
I meant node, not mode, and of course there is a choice of ping server to connect to :)
In this regard, I have a question:
- Is it worth it whether on iPhone or Mac, changing the DNS to one that is better known?
- Or do I leave it on automatic?
It's a doubt that has been coming up. . . .
If you aren't having a problem, leave it as auto.
Very hardworking youtuber s🙂
Does this give us the internet speed or the network speed? Is there a way to test the LAN speed instead? Thank you!
You can ping different nodes and check the response time.
Internet speed. Your local network speed should be much greater, but you wouldn't test it this way.
Does it depend on the version of Mac OS? Mine says "command not found" also. Still running Catalina.
This is for macOS Monterey.
same here
@@macmost Is there anythingh similar for Big Sur? Thanks.
@@francescolago4693 You'll just need to use a speed test website like I show.
my macbook pro m1 14 inch doesnt pass 866mbit in a 1.5 Gbit house..
once i get the macbook hooked with a ethernet adapter how can i check the local network speed?
Not sure if there is a way to do that with Ethernet. Do you have a reason to think it isn't operating at full speed? If not, then I wouldn't worry about testing it.
Is there a command to check ping speed?
You can use ping in Terminal.
Looks good, but to much work for me will use speed test.
The shell script finished with and error
Do you have macOS Monterey?
This command does not works on HighSierra?
The Terminal command? No. It is for Monterey. Use the website I show instead then.
@@macmost TKS
Thanks, but the network speed is not the same of internet speed. i need show the link speed of the wifi. mean the speed between mac wifi and my router. before big sur, it may be show by network utility but it not be any more.
I don't know of a way to do that. Usually it isn't an issue as the speed on your local network will be greater than the speed from the router to the Internet. Plus, whatever the advertised speed of the local network is, that's usually what you get since there's no competition for the network besides what you are doing with it.
4:29 You pay more for better speed and they slow you down to improve network quality for others... then let others pay more.
I tried this, and it works fine, except it does not show the time and date the test was run. What did I do wrong?
Not sure what you mean. The speed is all you need.
@@macmost Well, yours shows the date and time the test started and the date and time it ended. When I run mine, none of these shows up. BTW your first example in the video does not have start and end times. The last example does.
@@edmundhayes7982 Are you using -v like I am ?
@@macmost I used -s
I see that -s does not give date and time and -v does
Can you get date in the -s version
I tried the terminal Gary but it replied unknown command?
Did you type it exactly (caps counts). Or maybe you are using an older version of macOS?
@@macmost I tried about 3 times I'm using Big Sur
This is what the message is -
The default interactive shell is now zsh.
@@supersonicsid You'll need the latest version of macOS (Monterey) to get this Terminal command. Otherwise, just use the site I showed.
(Monterey 12.3.1) error: Exit code: 1😭but thanks
Perhaps something unusual about your network settings? A VPN? Custom settings?
Terminal can't find the command.
Watch out for the uppercase “Q” in networkQuality
Are you using the latest macOS?
second that
@@macmost .....maybe you can say that this works only on the Latest ( Monterey ) OS !!!
.....Yes...sorry.....you answered this somewhere above this reply !!
command not found
Using macOS Monterey?
@@macmost nope, big sur
My Terminal didn’t work, kept saying unknown command
Maybe you are using an older macOS?
@@macmost I’m sure yes
@@agridome So if you are on macOS Monterey, then maybe you are typing it wrong? Like missing a letter or adding a space between k and q. Or, maybe you are using a special shell. Works in zsh and bash though, maybe more.
@@macmost thank you, I’m using Catalina
@@agridome The Terminal command is new in macOS Monterey.
