Agree... The only ones who seem to peddle this fallacy are those who wouldn't mind selling you a whole new computer sooner rather than later. That's not to imply that security patches aren't of utmost importance... But many security patches are unfortunately bundled with non-essential "features" that increase demand on the system. My general rule: Once a computer is 4 years old, I'll do a clean install of whatever OS seems the best for the hardware, and make sure nothing is auto-updating. My 11-year-old Mac Pro is certainly less capable by today's standards - but as long as I keep it clean and avoid the latest updates, it can run High Sierra very well, and I still get great use out of it.
After an update to Big Sur 11.06.06 on iMac from 2015. The whole computer slowed down. After checking the Activity Monitor saw that that Chrome was taking more than 50% of the Memory. Switched to Firefox and gained the lost performance.
The best way I have been able to speed up an old Mac was to put Linux on it. My kid’s 15 year old Mac wouldn’t boot, was so old it couldn’t be updated. My kid loves it . Better than a chrome book or even the internet boxes sold uptown . I think it has an i5 in it.
If you have the original OS disk, you may find it helpful to install the system to an external SSD and create a bootable startup disk for it. My old 2009 iMac runs High Sierra just fine but it took some doing. It sucks that Mac hides startup items and caches in four different locations, each. Once you've found them all it's not too bad to manually delete them. Once that is actually done, the startup should take less than 2 minutes from a cold boot to get to the desktop and running a program. When I first got this Mac it took about 8 minutes to boot up because of all the old junk and the startup items. The activity log is the key to finding it all. Anything not running by "system" or "root" is optional (meaning it shouldn't be running if you don't want it to slow down the startup.) One thing I found that helped a lot was disabling automatic internet connection as well. When I boot up my computer, I have to go and turn on the WiFi, which keeps it from communicating outside of its own system. All of the logs and shared information for performance and ad tracking happen in the background. They dont need to be running. It is a better system, using almost any Linux distribution, than the corporate OS's (Mac, iOS, Windows, even big name android to some degree though android is less of an offender than the others) as Linux distro's are generally community built and supported, so they aren't making big time money off pushing ads and selling data en mass. Good call on that one, but I do prefer to have a dual boot system I can run the original OS on. Just in case.

Question: I have Adobe products on my iMac. I noticed that when I was uninstalling some Apps that I don't use, I had several versions of Adobe products on my mac. For example Photoshop 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022. Do I need all these? Or are they just the updates for Photoshop?
I use a lot of google apps so chrome is the browser I use most but I like to store all my passwords for sites I visit in apples password manager so I use safari for any of these. The problem I suspect is that having safari and chrome compete for the same resources uses more resources over all than if I just use one or the other. So I never run both browsers at the same time anymore.

I'm not sure I fully understand your comment at 3:00... Essentially, you're saying the more RAM my system has, the less hard drive space I should use. Can you explain this in a bit more detail? According to your advice, if I have a 512gb hard drive and 64gb of RAM, I should keep 128gb of my hard disk free at all times (reducing my usable HDD space to 384gb)... But if I only have 16gb of RAM, I'd only need to keep 32gb free on the hard drive (thus increasing my usable hard drive space to 480gb). I'd just love a little more explanation on this... I always thought additional RAM helped to reduce demand on the hard drive.
@@jerryx2000 thanks for the reply, but I wasn't asking for acknowledgement. I understand the basic math, but was hoping for more detail about *why* they're recommending this. I'll Google.
@@jerryx2000 In the event that you run out of RAM, that does make sense... but it still doesn't explain why I (apparently) need 2X the amount of RAM always available on the SSD. In general they seem like they know what they're talking about - but I always thought installing more RAM reduced the need to rely on the SSD for additional memory (your reply seems to support this assumption). However, the OP is claiming the opposite: That installing more RAM means you need even *more* surplus space on your SSD. I want to believe their information is accurate, but I also would love a clearer explanation than, "you need more **swap space.**"

Gentlemen I have a MacBook Pro w/Monterey… do I need Antivirus protection on it? I have a Norton subscription on my Windows PC and use it on the Mac, but do I really need it. I also use Piriforms CCleaner, is that okay, the free version
Yes I would uninstall Norton. I found it was a virus that put its programming in everywhere. 1. Apple Support community members are very helpful, if you want to check with them first before going into keychain. Removing old passwords helped me as well as resetting SMC and NVRAM. Google “How to reset the SMC on an M1 or Intel,” Mac Macworld article for procedures for your type of MacBook. 1. Search in Finder for norton and symantec on your Mac and delete and delete from Trash. Restart your computer. 2. Look through Settings and delete (use minus sign) for Norton and Symantec. If you want to speed up your computer, you need to remove all the old temp files and stop it from running things it doesnt need. Check the activity log and clear out anything that isnt running by the system. If a user profile is running processes, your computer doesnt need it to run. Get it out of the startup folders. When you first get an old computer, or first go to clean out your old computer, it is a GREAT idea to back up all the media you have saved, like photos and videos, documents, etc. Confirm that you have passwords for everything you need, then wipe the drive and install the OS from the DVD or ISO that came with the computer when new. My new iMac is slow after running migration assistance, I reloaded as a new Mac without moving any data and it was much better, but the only way I seem to be able to get all my data onboard is to use migration assistance with reloading the software, it takes over 30 seconds for the browser to come up, any way to fix this
I've got more than one mac, so I gave two of my macs a faulty password to my email the third I do use so it got the correct password. Would like to free up all the space being used by the mail clients that are not being used. And disable the programs cause I know they do things in the background like check for mail even when they are not running.
maybe you can answer this. If you happen to turn off my Mac it won't restart until you take the back off and disconnect the battery first. The battery is still good and last for about 3 hrs. any ideas?
I'd like an answer about this as well - but it's almost like if you don't post your question on a tutorial video within a short time they will never answer you - disappointing
I upgraded from Monterey to Ventura, worse decision. Ventura is sluggish compared to Monterey. Stands to reason as I discover Ventura uses 13 gig to run vs Monterey, using something like 4 gig, apparently. No trick employed has worked.
Oh Guys just in time for me. I just bought my MAC and said “I bet the guys have awesome notes to tell us”. I was so right! You make my day, week, month 🤓
Nothing should take more than a second on an M1 MacBook Pro with 32 gig and 1TB, which is what I have. Logic for some reason, is now super slow. It's ridiculous.
"A lot of times [your Mac] gets faster [with OS updates]!" Not necessarily if you are running an older machine. And a lot of folks do. I'm typing this right now on a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro I'm perfectly happy with, running Mojave. That's as far as I should go in updating. (Which is why, basically, Apple increasingly sucks.)
You might want to go into a little more detail on things we DON'T want running on our Macs. Mine has some kind of decoder something (many more letters but whatever). How do I know what these things mean? I like your videos, gentlemen, though I'm puzzled that so many are things to turn off or on, or do or not do. Oh, and another thing. On my activity monitor there's a photoanalysis going on. Why is that and why would it be going on? That's what I mean about not knowing the pearls and swine. Also, I'd like to know about scanning software. I have malwarebytes but have never started paying. Apple clerks insist that they don't make viruses for the Mac, but I have trouble believing that. I can believe that the structure may or may not make it more difficult for viruses to do their mischief, but I don't know enough to do anything about it in any case. Time machine. (so many questions!) I had it running on my desktop, which is no longer working. I don't intend to replace it, just use my laptop, but can I switch it over to this laptop easily? I haven't looked yet, but since y'all are right here, just thought I'd ask. Maybe I can meld the two together or something. Lots of data on there though.
We found in our tests that they do end up hindering performance more than they help! There are guides online on how to uninstall them since they are more ingrained into the computer than most programs. Thanks for watching!
All Great tips Thankyou only one not for me and 100% of people are updating your Mac as a Studio owner one Update can cause 70% of your apps not to work anymore lol Worst thing ever. Shalom
It's a terrible idea to 'upgrade your os'. That will just slow down your computer even more. It's horrible, horrible advice. Most peoples' computer can't handle the new updates and there is no way to roll them back. Please don't do this.

@@ohnah6261 Thx! Your Mac have same situation? My Mac have 8G ram.
Don't do it bro , Mac will become super slow
@@Joseph-Lau yes
I upgraded my iMac 27 inch to Monterey but you know, I also upgraded it from 8GB to 24GB and it runs fine.....
HI, COULD YOU HELP ME REMOVING "THIS BROWSER IS MANAGED BY YOUR ORGANISATION"
i updated my mac and it got way slower! should i revert or get the newest version?
Many users think they should buy a new one because got slow even witj 2mb pics preview and later they ditch the macs and someone formats them
Nice job apple
imac 27 late 2014 .... Always high cpu usage even I have clean installation of mac os.... I just opened safari to see RUclips after a few minutes, the cpu is on the high side after looking at activity monitor
Thanks for your informative video.
My 2009 iMac seems to be running slow. I did a "Factory Reset" but the iMac seems to be still running slow when my wife is running Pokemon game. She feels that Pokemon runs much faster on her much newer iPad. Any suggestions? Thanks.
It's probably because the computer is 14 years old.
My new iMac is slow after running migration assistance, I reloaded as a new Mac without moving any data and it was much better, but the only way I seem to be able to get all my data onboard is to use migration assistance with reloading the software, it takes over 30 seconds for the browser to come up, any way to fix this
my brand new 3 thousand dollar macbook takes 3 hours to upload a 15 minute video when my 450 dollar gateway laptop uploads the same video in 5 minutes
What if you reset to factory all the MacBook Pro 13.inch early 2015? Is that not the best Solution ?? Someone’s that thank you 🙏
Well done video ! Thx
The battery is still good and last for about 3 hrs. any ideas?
Thank you
what if you don't use a router?
Great review!!!!!
it is ctrl + space and not command + space to open spotlight. key got changed in recent update.
still works for me
Nicely done!
Nice videos. More of these pro tips on Mac and iPhone. Like to see more no tips and tricks. 😁
It was mentioned that 3rd party cleaners arent always good, would you recommend clean my mac x? I see a lot of tech youtubers recommend it.
I'd like an answer about this as well - but it's almost like if you don't post your question on a tutorial video within a short time they will never answer you - disappointing
THANK YOU!!
Of course! We love to help, thanks for watching!
Make another video make it fast and settings need to be turn off with latest software update on Mac
Hey my Samsung charging but no increasing its charge I need help it still at 14
Nothing should take more than a second on an M1 MacBook Pro with 32 gig and 1TB, which is what I have. Logic for some reason, is now super slow. It's ridiculous.
Although I do not presently have a Mac, it reminds me of issues with Windows 10
great video
The only way to speed up a Mac after Apple slows it down, is by buying a new Mac.
I have the same laptop and am trying to speed it up a bit
You are using a 2012 macbook pro in 2022....How does it surf the web?
That is very good information for Sam one who knows what to do
I appreciate the free info, but I am finding it difficult to listen to this because the compression/limiting on your voice is so heavy
I Had a VS code deprecated extension taking up 200% 👁️👄👁️.. my computers never been more quiet
Dropbox is a horrible offender for taking over all of your machines resources.
Nice thx
Geez I have safari taking 230 and telegram 175!
Excellente
I have Clean My Mac...get rid of it?
We found in our tests that they do end up hindering performance more than they help! There are guides online on how to uninstall them since they are more ingrained into the computer than most programs. Thanks for watching!
@@PayetteForward Thanks! I thought as much but thought I just double-check.
I didn’t know it was possible to shill so hard for a company you don’t work for
How can I speed up my "Apple Crapbook"..."Pro" ?
DO NOT "GOOGLE"...EVER!
IMO if an app is harder to uninstall than it was to install it, it's malware.
So I'm supposed to know what a cleaner app is and how to get rid of it after clicking on the :-)!! Ugh
Vote for Mark Kelly.
All Great tips Thankyou only one not for me and 100% of people are updating your Mac as a Studio owner one Update can cause 70% of your apps not to work anymore lol Worst thing ever. Shalom
MAC is is over rated! My worst buy ever is an Imac! 6 months old and is slow like the early 90's computer! And it's not my Internet.
It was the login items in my case 🤡
🕊
this is so stupid. updating an old mac is the # 1 way to slow it down
How do i fix it now :(
I am personally finding that the M1 Mac is overhyped, my previous i5 model was better.
How so? I have an i5 and am just curious.
@@lakeit I simply find that its not really an upgrade from an i5. It’s laggy and anything to do with MacOS takes ages especially updates.
Drop it off a really tall building. Highest speed and best solution.
Advanced people??
What a cringey, awkward thumbnail. Aren't you ashamed?
Who puts that shite background music in their videos? Oh these guys.
Its really annoying
update is a scam, it makes your system slow so you will buy new ones! business as usual! BS!
It's a terrible idea to 'upgrade your os'. That will just slow down your computer even more. It's horrible, horrible advice. Most peoples' computer can't handle the new updates and there is no way to roll them back. Please don't do this.
