Linux is looking better and better by the day. I am sick of having to relearn the basics of the operating system every time Microsoft pump out a new version of Windows. And why should people have to buy a new PC just to be able to run this bloated spyware? It's a gigantic rip-off.

    • @philmarsh7723
      @philmarsh7723 5 месяцев назад +8

You know, what I did was:
      1. Run Linux on the bare metal (native) on my systems. That enables me to put in a nice filesystem like ZFS.
      2. Install a VM (virtual machine) such as Virtualbox and install Windows in that for software which must have Windows OS.
      3. Do the bulk of my software and engineering work using Linux.
      4. Run Windows VM guest when I need to run Windows Office or other Windows-exclusive software, e.g. Turbotax. Now my Windows VM guest and its data are backed up using the ZFS filesystem which is on a RAID array and has snapshots and parity checks to greatly reduce the possibility of file corruption from hard disk bit flips and failures.
If you have a moderately powerful machine - 32GB or more RAM and 8cores, you should do this.

There was talk about it being fully AI based. and a Microsoft employee said "Will require an all new system architecture". And the current tech news is bragging about this new AI based CPU built on ARM. And tech radar claims that Microsoft wants Windows 12 to run on it's own Silicon. So if that's true, a upgrade path from your current PC wont be possible. Further more, rumors suggest that AI will run the entire OS. We are talking core level AI. Everything you do. File explorer, start menu, Applications. All of it will be powered by AI. Which i find scary as hell. Your OS will have the ability to think, and it will also learn about it's user and many other eye-brow raising things. As a software dev, i find this creepy as hell. I know what this kind of tech is capable of, and i do NOT under any circumstances want the core of my OS built around it. I would say "Oh just use Linux". But if Microsoft wants their own Silicon, and the OS is binded to it via AI. after a few generations you wont have any hardware left that can actually run Linux. At least not in the main stream. So far, i'm hating everything i'm hearing about Windows 12.

I am sticking with Win10 for now, but Linux is my go to place in the near future. Windows will live in a WM if I need apps like O365 or Adobe suite. Who the hell wants AI instead of a start menu. The whole reason for the start menu is to help me look for an app.

I like 11 and love the next phase to a number 12 but it could be neat to use a name instead of 12 or something like the colour 12 as only seven colours in a rainbow when you mix red and orange you get VERMILION this could be a good name of the OS for Windows.

W11, W12, W13, W14 .... when DX is fully converted to Vulkan is windows the last system which I will install on my machine. Microsoft is nothing else as a big data crawler which sits inside your system, slows it down and fills your machine with crap features which nobody has asked for. When you will use Windows anyways then get sure to install a good firewall, because the firewall from windows itself suggested security where none is and also stops Microsoft from controlling your machine. It has good reasons why Microsoft itself uses on their systems Linux instead of Windows. Think about this!

Don't forget the two biggest things that will come with Windows 12: A whole new load of bugs/vulnerabilities, and software incompatibilities.
Beyond that, it's very telling that one of the "features" touted for W12 is "no subscription fee". This implies that people are expecting there to be a subscription fee, and if you condition enough to expect one, they're not going to revolt when there eventually is one. Microsoft would already be charging users by the minute if they thought they could get away with it.
Plus, I predict that users will have even less control over "their" computers under W12. Micorosoft will continue to freely change whatever they like in Windows and users will have no way to stop them.
Whatever benefits W12 may have, it will come with a lot of negatives as well. Sadly, people have been conditioned to accept these things as normal.

Windows again misses the technical writings on the wall. Look for example at OpenSuSE Micro and its comrades how a state-of-the-art modular system is built thats learnt the Docker lesson. Never delete a package, but overlay transactional. Forget about installing apps, but install complete packages with all its transitional requirements without interfering other packages with overlapping parts. Thats much more important than the silly AI stuff. And build a puggable UI subsystem like the display managers of linux. Thats what i'd expect, no less.

I like how they ditched everything that made Windows...yknow, *look like Windows* in an effort to make it look like bargain-bin pound shop MacOS.
What was wrong with the no-frills appeal? why does everything have to be transparent and minimalist?
And what's with all the AI crap? If I build a computer, I want to use a computer, not interface with an algorithm that will use my computer for me....
And why is Microsoft *so* insistent that I can only have a Windows PC *if* I have an account with them that is intrinsically tied to my personal computer? Can I not be trusted to use my device without an internet connection? Or does Microsoft have some financial gain from (probably) borderline illegally collecting data from the users of it's OS?
They're becoming more like Apple by the day and I don't like it.
