Rather than resizing locally, it will be shipped with the logo rendered in every common resolution.
I personally wish they would switch to a 5-year major release model, with 3 years of feature updates, and 10 years of security and bug fix updates. This would give them more time to polish their new releases, rather than releasing them in an incomplete and buggy state. We all remember how the first release of Windows 10 and Windows 11 worked out. Even now, Windows 11 is getting updates that break things.
this is so true. I would either want this, or a completely revamped rolling release system, kinda like what you see with a lot of linux distros (e.g. arch, gentoo, void, etc.) -- so you would never have to deal with all the stress of a **new, maybe completely different and scary update** (i cant get markdown syntax to work...?) :)
Yeah, there must be a written rules that all desktop operating system must be supported for at least 10 years.
We don't want a perfectly capable computers to ended up in e-waste bin so quick because of short software support (just like the Chromebooks that only has 5-7 year support, and become completely unusable after the EOL date)

I'd agreed. As it is not fair on hard of hearing or deaf person who is struggling to understands. Most of the hearing person are ignorant over that. And I'm deaf but does pissed me off when feels like forgotten
@@hawky2k215 agreed. Many of the creators I am subscribed to are good about making sure their content has captions enabled (but I did come across one that looked interesting but NONE of her videos are captioned! Grr). I think the worst are those who repost clips from TV shows and movies!

And if you do that in ever video of having captions then I'd respect you for that. But don't do it just for the deaf. Do it for someone who had got an English barrier too

I would assume if they actually made Windows more modular that the more basic installs would be lacking the AI entirely.

Exactly.. Plus they will remove more useful features and make it even more difficult to use any browser other than Edge. Win 11 was Win 10 with Less freedom and features

Thank you for a great overview of what is coming - that said - I have been working with and monitoring Microsoft since 1983, yes DOS days and like - One thing I noticed is, always as HW is beefed up it follows with OS that less robust and less optimized; as time pass and OS evolves, the developers began to focus on look-n-feel rather than performance and optimization until today as you can see.
What we should expect in this 21st Century is, a smart OS (in today's words) an AI OS that can heal itself, that can generate a logical prediction by giving facts to determine who is logged in, what they need to access, and to achieve it seamlessly. additionally, an OS analyzes its environment (HW capability, SW process demands, network resources present) to provide its user with all needed resources; likewise, the OS will know its network capacity and shortcoming, and establish maximum transfer channels between storage, internet, and streaming.
So you see, all these bells and whistles make no sense when it comes to productivity; we haven't seen anything like that, and that is because they are short-sighted in this area.
Being told what you need is different than what you actually need.

Retail releases of Windows are similar to Windows server. Windows 7=Server 2008 then theres Server 2012 and Windows 8/8.1. Next came Windows 10=Server 2016 then theres Server 2019 and Windows 10 S. Next came Windows 11=Server 2022. See the trend here?

what I'd love to see:
- proper audio routing and controls supporting mixes for different output channels (onboard, slotted or ext)
- AI console: loose syntax, but deep access (although...nah, can't see anything go wrong with that at all...)
- multicore support, esp. for native 1 core processes (make a 8C/16T look like the beefiest 1C/1T if needed), distribute load more evenly over all cores

Every decision made by Windows division executives is about building a profile and profiting off that profile with telemetry and data mining.
Also at 7:33, notice the window for Teams doesn’t have the Minimize/Maximize/Close button at the top-right but instead a “…” button.
Actually, the insisting of MS to upgrade to Win11, and also Win 11 insisting to not start operating until it calls home, plus insisting on downloading and installing updates whenever the OS wants... It was just too much insisting on unnecessary things, and in the end, it all forced me into finding a better solution, so after over a decade and a half of just wanting to, I finally switched to Linux about nine months ago. And I probably should've done this like 9 or 10 years ago.
And I recommend everyone doing the same. I recommend Linux Mint which in my opinion is one of if not THE best choice for Windows users. It may take some time, but it's easy, and definitely pays off.
My fear is that Windows becomes like android and you end up with lots of machines that can't run the latest version making you buy a new one
that's not a great marketing scheme for Microsoft, more will just switch to Linux, that can be ran in almost any machine
@@2k7u That's not something most normies know how to do, or even are aware of. Tech-capable people like us would probably switch, but few others. It's not like you're gonna see Ubuntu or Mint on store shelves.
No TPM, no windows 11. Would be easy to replace that with some other piece of hardware of inflated importance.

Personally, I'll probably stick to Windows 10 as long as possible. If or when I switch to Windows 12, I will be turning off as much AI features as possible. I like Windows to be lean and as bloat free as possible. I don't want AI second guessing everything you do and hogging resources, not to mention the likelihood that telemetry will get even more invasive.
Good luck with that. It's probably going to be forced down your throat, just like automatic web searches every time you search something local.

Oh! An idea for Windows 12: Customizable buttons that take you to certain web pages, or activate certain things that you want the custom button to do.
Like the comment so more people can see the idea, maybe even Microsoft.

I’m guessing you’re not old enough to remember keyboards that had dedicated buttons to take you to a media player, your email and web browser and other buttons that could be programmed to take you to websites. That was circa the early 2000’s
I believe it; the last snapshot of windows 11 in the Canary Channel has provided an odd experience with the dimensions and playback times of pictures, videos, and music are removed from the Navigation Pane jn file explorer. It feels more like a beta build of Windows 11.1 or higher instead.
Also, earlier this year they added the additional parameters for the OS to take more advantage of the chip you needed to run windows 11, but only directly after sunsetting support for Windows 10. They didn’t want to Develop Windows 10 to have more parameters to take advantage of the security of the Chip outside of the most basic of features, or do the bug fixes on those parameters for the older OS.
I have the strong feeling Microsoft will make the brave choice to move on from their good bad good pattern to good bad worse
Within every newer version of Windows it continues to get worse. The last good simple stable Windows OS we had was Windows 7.
If anyone can manage it, it's Microsoft.

True. I don't like Windows 10, I wouldn't call it 'good', maybe it's 'good' compared to 8(.1) but it's not an improvement over 7
Windows 10 is pushing 8 years old now. I get a feeling that it may end up being the "next XP" in terms of users holding on to the OS. I now completely understand why so many people refused to move on from XP....as someone born in 2005, I've used Windows 10 for the better three-quarters of my computer experience. I've gotten comfy and used to the way Windows 10 works and looks, and moving will take some time.
I still miss XP. I have had windows 10 for years, but never been comfortable with it. A simple, basic windows OS is all i want, and i don't really know what to do now.
Businesses such as large corporations loved that about Windows 10, as they are still using it.
move to Linux MInt LOL. i've used it since 2015 and haven't needed windows since. Some windows software that you might want to run on it will require some tricky configurations, but the linux community is quite helpful for things such as that.
XP was just better, and I used most Windows OS 😂

Most apps I had to install on Linux distros (mostly RHEL-based and Debian-based) for over 15 years of my career as an IT Admin (Linux included) weren't as easy as in Windows (i.e. double-click the binary and then next, next, finish), but required a lot of googling (software manuals weren't enough), a lot of asking on StackOverflow, ServerFault etc. and often it was a dead-end (i.e. it didn't work for some reason and no one was able to figure out why). On top of that, a lot of installations either broke other previously installed software or the OS itself. IMO the container idea (Docker, LXC etc.) came just from that (i.e. the idea was to minimize the damage on the OS by a simple app installation).
Im not ready, im hyped to what it might be.

Thank you. I was considering installing Windows 11 as I have time now, but may not by the time support ends for W10. However, launching W12 before the end of W10 support sounds very possible, considering the speed AI is developing. So maybe/hopefully we'll be able to to upgrade from W10 directly to W12

I’m glad I’m not the only one that knows about PowerToys. I don’t use all of them.
I often end up installing power toys because they often had one or two killer features that I loved. Fancy Zones is the killer app for me when it comes to Win 10.
I feel like Win10 just finally got stable enough for day-to-day work and commercial applications. I also cannot imagine my company suddenly switching over to Win12 (they never even bothered with Win11 anyways) so... yeah probably gonna hang onto WIn10 for as long as I can.
IT support here. Microsoft stops releasing security updates for end of life (EOL) Windows. This forces companies to switch to latest Windows version. I have supported Windows OS switch from XP to 7. Currently, 7 to 10. Requires more memory. Soon, 10 to 11. Required Intel 8th generation or later processor. Windows 10 EOL on October 14, 2025.

@@cronostvg I regularly use an XP machine because 64-bit Excel still is not capable of correctly running some 32-bit VBA plugins. It's behind a firewall that blocks anything to and from the internet, so it's probably the most secure machine in the office. If Microsoft can't be bothered to fix security issues before they EOL an operating system, it is very unlikely that their next version is magically free of security issues. I would even be surprised if "supported" versions have fewer security issues than EOL'ed versions.
I had this in the background and you caught my attention with the floating task bar and the corner icons. You reference this to Mac OS type things, but I'm pretty sure Windows has been mooching ideas off of KDE, or other Linux desktops and window managers. The top bar seems to take a lot away from something called waybar, or eww. These type of bars are mostly added or suplemented to tiling window managers like i3, sway, hyprland, awesome and such. (Love tiling styles). Windows 11's task bar actually have me a deepin vibe. Or a launcher dock type that GNome 3 used.
On that note, I'm missing the close and maximize buttons. Which is a common theme in tiling window managers. Since you mostly control navigation and window placement through keyboard usage. Kinda like Windows' snap feature. Closing the windows doesn't always close the application if it can and wants to run in the background. Steam also used to kill itself off completely until they patched it with the new UI. Anyway, maybe the UI redesign is taking the different approach from the classic way to control 'windows'.
There has been an increase in desktop usage with Linux since the steam deck (without counting the steam deck systems), and maybe partially thanks to it. While you still might need a few alternatives to application (mainly adobe or office, which people need to stop dying on a hill for), Linux has become quite user friendly to use. And a lot of new users have noted it wasn't as scary as it seemed, or that it's changed to being more friendly by leaps. I've been using it for years and at moments, I didn't even realize how much easier stuff had gotten.
I really don't have hope for Windows anymore. And I think there are a lot more people who are skeptical of it improving. If they switch to Linux, all I can say is, try to catch Chris Titus Tech channel. Picking a distro really doesn't matter. There's Debian for stability, Arch and NixOS for the more advanced tinkerers and Linux Mint for the beginners. Red Hat started to lose it's way, but Nobara is probably the best one aimed for gamers. It's a Red Hat dev that has been actively releasing patched and improved versions of wine and proton. It's a fedora fork made for gamers. Most else is an unnecessary reskin of the before mentioned distros. There's rarely a distro that breaks out with their own thing.

Yes, what we definitely need is an AI scrubbing through our files and sending the data to Microsoft. I'm sticking to Windows 10 and probably finally switching to linux after that since gaming finally starts to be viable.
Yes, they definitely need to somehow encrypt you AI usage data to make sure that didn’t happen. I am also sticking to windows 10 since I know it so well and I don’t like how overly simple windows 11 is.

I used to be a great fan of Windows with version 7 being my favorite. Then I was forced to "upgrade" to version 10 because MS dropped support for 7. I worked hard to strip away Cortana, Edge (I use Firefox), and other bloatware from Win 10, but they periodically came back via updates that were forced upon me. I became so fed up that a few months ago I switched to Linux Mint Cinnamon, and I couldn't be happier. I am really amazed how Windows-like this Linux distro is, but in a really good way. No spyware, no adware, no forced upgrades, and it is free and open source. Instead of MS Office, I am using LibreOffice which reads and write files in MS Office format. It too is free and open source. There are also free equivalents for several Adobe products like Photoshop. My only regret is that I didn't switch sooner. The nice thing about Linux distros is that you can boot from a USB flash drive and run it without installing so you can decide if you like it or not before doing an installation.
They could also remove the need for an account.
It's not like Microsoft would actually do something like this that for once wouldn't piss their users off, but you know... one can dream, right?
They won't because Windows is spyware and it doesn't care about the user, only your data that can help them make money off of you. Come to Linux, no need for online accounts here.

I've been running classic shell since 7 because I don't really like what Microsoft are doing with their UI. It would be nice to have that level of customisation built in and accessible
precisely this, all i want is for windows to let me customize it to my liking. W10 with classic shell is great, and the radical changes to the UI in 11 (and probably onwards) is a major turn-off.

@@czech_ring I guess that depends what desktop environment you're running. I don't have a great deal of experience there tbh to be able to comment - I mainly just use Ubuntu with GNOME when I have to Linux for work. I have to use MacOS frequently too but find Windows is still my default go-to. Classic Shell and PowerToys gets you where you want to be quite intuitively, just a shame you have to rely on additional tools to get there.

I hope they bring back Aero like in windows 7, i always preferred the windows 7 style over the modern ones.

What's dumb is that at least in Windows 10, it does have transparency but it's so close to opaque with no options to change it that you barely even see it.
They won't. At least not with the same texture as Windows 7. Windows is undoubtedly heading in a very flat and minimalist direction, so even if they were to bring back aero, it would be just some milky/dark blur customizable in the same way as the accent colors for the taskbar and other UI elements
I just hope they FINALLY finish moving Control panel stuff to settings. I hate the mixed locations for lots of settings with no clear direction where anythign really is.
All I want is a built in frosted glass theme for windows apps, taskbar, and start menu (especially file explorer)

I’m most interested in the rumored immutable variant of Windows next.
I’ve recently spent a month exclusively running desktop Linux, and Silverblue was one of the very few “oh gosh I wish Windows had that” moment. (other moments are swupd and routing features) It’s reassuring knowing that whatever stupidity I’m about to pull, I’m not going to leave some nasty mess deep inside my OS. (I’m a bit of a clean freak when it comes to computers, and recently after uninstalling a program I had to pull out 10+ registry keys left all over the Windows Registry)
As for the AI stuff, I’m not sold. Hope they make it an optional Windows feature so it can be disabled.

Linux us great. I recommend switching full time. Back in the day it required many sacrifices, but these days you can do almost everything you could on Windows. Hell, you can even play games because Valve are amazing and invested a lot into proton and vulkan. Only games with intricate anti-cheat are still problematic, but I think one day we'll get through that as well.
Oh god yes, the immutability and every bit of software being sandboxed with no real side-effects to other software or the OS are the only things I'm excited about

They'll probably remove all the things that are sooo much better in control panel and move it to settings where half the functionality will go away. They'll force some advertising popup that will no doubt annoy you unless you log in to turn it off. THey'll disable the ability to set up a new copy of windows without using an email account. Printers and network properties are where I spend most of my support time so I imagine they'll find some way to make those almost impossible to get to in the next version of Windows. I believe there is some worthless middle management people who say let's make f'n change for the sake of change but we'll tell people it is an improvement. I know changing your printer network property required 3 clicks to get to now - instead we'll make you open up powershell (elevated of course because it is nearly useless otherwise) then just write this small 18 line script to change the IP address and reboot - isn't that easier? Don't worry we have a KB article on how to do it but in no way will we give you and idea of what is a variable and what is a part of the command by showing it with a real world example and screenshot - that would be to obvious.
Yeah I'm pretty much done with this Powershell shit. Microsoft has spent 30+ years trying to get AWAY from the command line (MSDOS) and now they're leaning hard into Powershell, which is a million times more complicated and confusing than MSDOS ever was. The reason why people don't like Linux is because of all the terminal bullshit. If Microsoft does the same thing then there really is no advantage to Linux. Linux has ironically been moving away from the terminal while Microsoft is now running face-first into it. I get that Powershell can be a useful tool for admins and power users but that should be an OPTION not a requirement. If Microsoft invented the Group Policy Editor today I guarantee you it would be added to Powershell and there would be no UI. I like the UI. @@thelbtlover Having just switched to linux from windows, I have to say I think it's moving towards the best of both worlds honestly. Linux is getting more user friendly for casual users while having a very mature community around the command line which can make an initially intimidating task much easier to get a grip on.
Before last week, I hadn't touched command line computing since a few cursory attempts back at my first job. Now I'm getting comfortably SSHing into the multiple raspberry pis I have on my home network and altering all sorts of settings.
Biggest problem I had was slamming my head into the wall setting up duel boot for windows, since I may still have use cases for Win10 when I need software or games that can't run on linux. And that had more to do with not writing the GRUB.config file thoroughly and missing an important command.
Windows REALLY needs a revamp. Windows is extremely frankensteined right now im actually surprised that it even works.

It absolutely does need a revamp, but the problem is that major changes to an operating system take years to turn into a usable system. This is the real reason behind the "every second windows is good" phenomenon.
@FreeDownloadHere The real issue is the spyware and all the bloatware running forever in the background. I have Windows 11 Ghost Spectre Superlite and with all that backwards compatibility I can bring its RAM usage down to 0.7 GB if I run the TIW11 script and Memreduct cleaning RAM every single 10 minutes (extremely lightweight in conparison to other Windows processes). Still very much in comparison to most Linux distros, but at some point the standard Windows 10 comes to use 2.7 GB on startup.
Most of the compatibility stuff is just dormant and stays unused, thus only taking space on the disk.

To me, the only noticeable difference between win10 and win11 was the crippled start menu in 11. So I sincerely hope that win12 will bring in some actual new features, not extra hadicaps to the existing functionality.
Win11 is terrible though. It runs like shit even with Edge being used, every little news thing is auto set to on and it takes forever just to shut the bullshit off, and most games can't even run on the damn thing
I don't want any newer features. I want a secure operating system that works and is simple to use without all of the spyware from Microsoft that secretly is in your Windows settings.

I hope they fix their shit. I ultimately gave in 2 weeks ago and installed the free upgrade to windows 11 from 10 and it would crash my system every 5 minutes. Apparently a fairly common BSOD error with windows 11 looking at the Mircosoft help forum. Their expert on the forum asks me for my system logs and says there is something physically wrong with my RAM even though there were 0 issues before windows 11. I revert back to Windows 10 from the settings and lo everything's fine again.

I've been a happy Linux user ever since Windows 10 came out. I miss Windows Media Center, but now Kodi works better than MC ever did. Can't say Disney Plus blinking/flashing/rotating in the Start menu is a feature I want either.

Nice! I wish more people gave Linux a shot. A lot of people still think it looks like it did 10 or 15 years ago and have no idea it's just as usable for everyday tasks as Windows is. But people are lazy and scared of change. I guess they can still run Spyware 10 or 11 or 12 if it comes out, its their choice.
@@Cavi587 the problem with Linux is that there's too many options, a fractured community arguing the benefits of their favourite distro, and being open source/freeware means that support or development can drop overnight.
If there was ONE "go to" version of Linux that was a direct replacement for Windows Pro and Windows Server, and that didn't require trawling through forums or command lines to get the basics done then Linux could absolutely take off. I would love this myself as each version of Windows since 7 has gotten progressively more invasive and bloat filled.
But until then Linux remain an enthusiast/niche option unfortunately.
@@img00 Yeah, I can't argue with that. I'm gonna say that it's gotten a lot better nowadays, people mostly recommend newbies like 3-4 distros, mostly based on debian/ubuntu. And I think command line isn't as scary as people make it to be, it's not even as necessary as it once was. I installed Zorin OS on my cousins PC and he's been running it for more than a year now, playing all video games he wanted to play and he never had to launch the terminal. Now, it's true that I did go into his command line when I was there, but it wasn't anything serious or critical, just made it easier for me to do some maitenance for him that he could do from the GUI as well.

As a Linux/Windows Person, i really hope that the ai stuff doesn't happen because it would really bloat the system and make it harder to use for normal users. I also just hope it gets a ui update and brings back a transparent theme (such as aero), but also keeps the taskbar idea the same; differing from "next valley" where everything changes.
While Windows Aero is no more, the Mica title bars in Windows 11 to me make up for the removal of Windows Aero.
We need like a classic theme for like aero/luna/classic, and maybe like a theme maker (like WindowBlinds) in which anyone can make custom themes for Windows.

What you said about the possibility of how AI integration into W12 sounds interesting, but it also raises a lot of concern.
If we could just ask AI to change settings on our machines, eventually somebody would have the idea of "let's stop putting settings where user can interact with directly", so everything would have to go through AI.
As Windows users since 3.0, we know that Microsoft always hide a lot of settings from their users. Some are even necessary setting for troubleshooting or performance optimization (i.e. turning off things that MS made that make the machine run slow).
Then those who need access to settings would have to pay to become "authorized trouvleshooter", just like what many corps have been trying to do with the whole issue about Rights to Repair.
And if the AI is inferencing from the cloud, with so many windows users, how much compute power would their servers require? there.. the whole "energy saving" and "go green" issue 🤣
On the other hand, if the AI is inferencing locally, how big the installation would be?
And if technology keep going toward what people have been predicting, i.e. game with AI NPCs, then gamers would need a lot of computing power, which would have to be shared with windows' AI.
Then we'd have to find ways to turn off the AI LOL.
I remember back in early 2020s, I saw that there were about 6 or 8 instances of Edge sitting on my VRAM (and I don't even use Edge) and it took me quite a while to find out how to make them stay on RAM, because I needed as much VRAM as possible to play games and do machine learning.
Lastly, there's some issue about learning.
We learned what we learned because there were times when we couldn't find somebody to ask, so we had to do some trial and error, but in the end we learned something.
If we always have AI over our shoulder to ask/tell what to do with our machines, I think future generations would be lacking in terms of learning experience.
Please note that I'm not against AI, I'm against irresponsible use of technology, AI or otherwise 🙂
In my opinion regarding settings, all they had to do was a well working search in the system settings and a half-organized structure for these settings. They failed to do both of them (as a whole, some sections work well). Starting with Win Vista up to Win 10 they just progressively kept moving settings from the old system settings (which still exists) to PC settings for no reason. Now they expect it to be better with AI. I doubt it, it will be the same thing as a search, just with a button appearing in chat instead of the search results. Especially all those ancient dialogs (which are burried in some minimalistic light grey text appearing on the side) will be impossible to properly be indexed in any way unless they redo them in the new style.

Microsoft has been limiting what you can do with Windows for YEARS now, AI is not needed, they were already spying on you and collecting your data. AI will only allow them to do that more efficiently. AI can be a great tool when used well, but I don't trust Microsoft one bit. Just ditch the Spyware OS and come to the Linux side, we have freedom here and every feature of our OS can be bent to our will. You don't like a feature? You can cut it from the OS. You want an additional feature? You can add it.

I think an AI assistant could be useful as exactly that, an assistant. My biggest concern is that it could become the primary or only method of doing certain things. I'm no expert but I generally prefer to use somewhat-bare-bones-ish software where I can more easily see what failed, rather than something that holds my hand and doesn't make it easy to see what went wrong, or at what stage the task failed to execute.
Also I'm not a big fan of seemingly unnecessary network connections / sign ins. Sure the whole world is online but if I want my computer to do something that it can definitely do by itself, I'd really rather not create an account and send data to some company to do it on their servers instead. It's not very resourceful and has a negative environmental impact (and often subscription fees) and regardless of steps taken to keep things safe, sending data to a server is inherently less secure than just doing the calculation locally and always will be.

as a regular AI user, i can see that most jobs won't be replaced by AI. They will be assistant at best. They might become good at one task, but it's usually too precise to be good. For example, stable diffusion can generate really beautiful drawings. But it's not that easy to tell him what to do (try to make 2 different people, it's not possible. Some make it with controlnet, but honestly this addon just scare me how i just don't understand how to use it), and if you trying to make something that he doesn't have that many data of, he is completely lost (less than 100 images on danbooru is usually not enough). And in those domain, the AI can't really progress. It would just be baby steps, unoticeable. For stable diffusion the only progress to made is for beauty, and we are starting to hit a big wall, were some images are as good as big artist.
Also, for the AI necessiting network, it will be mandatory. The models like chatgpt or llama ones are around 80GB. Only professionnal video card have that much vram. You can technically use ram (if you even have 80GB of ram) or storage, but it would be much, much slower (some reports 30 seconds per words). Stable diffusion models are around 2GB, so most video card can support them. And even if they can't, you have a mode who can put it in ram. But again, it's slower)
Cortana worked locally, because it was a small model. And as you can see, it's pretty bad.
They will certainly make it the main way of doing things.

switched to Linux in 2003, never looked back. I check videos like these at times as I am still called by friends to help with their computer woes. Recently done a fresh install of W11 on one of those, it wanted the user to have a microsoft account in order to use and log into their computer. Then I installed W10 on it and everything seems to work without the need for a microsoft account.
Thing is Joe how much is this situation going to cost or be free and if one is happy with Windows 11 how long will support last for it ? The other thing that worries me is will they prescribe even more stricter rules for machines with these upgrades.?
I hope you're right about everything you've talked about. I am sticking with 10 for as long as possible--hopefully skipping 11 on every computer I can.

Windows 11 doesn't support my taskbar on the left, quick access links were deleted and the start menu tiles were gone.
So I switched back to Windows 10 after about an hour trying to fix these things. I think W11 is not meant to be for people who want to be productive it's just a skin change with many important features not yet supported.
W11 can support left-aligned taskbars, but live tiles are gone which is sad

Your mistake is trying to be productive. You're supposed to be feeding Windows your data so it can train its AI to be productive, and then Microsoft can sell it to you as a service once you rely on it for productivity.

It feeld short because of two things:
1. Win 11 took some time to be completed even after they released it. It changed a lot since then. Feels like it's only finished by now.
2. Windows 8.1 and 10 were kinda similar so it often gets seen as one OS. (and many used 7 up until 1-2 years ago! which is very long)
I've read that MS is planning to make 11 & 12 only usable via cloud computing. Also, we'll have to see how much bloatware MS decides to "grace" us with.
They know that if they do that they'll lose like 99% of their user base

I wish I had switched to linux sooner. I haven't worried about any of this since I did. There is no drama, there is no hoping a terrible company will make a good decision in spite of itself. There are some rough edges and weird bugs, but things are always getting better, and nothing ever gets worse. Updates aren't mandatory. Settings don't go back to their defaults. Anything can be uninstalled.
In fewer words, I'm treated like I own the computer. I'm upset that I didn't demand that respect sooner, it was always mine for the taking. I just thought it would be too hard to switch, and I was totally wrong.

CorePC is basically gonna overhaul Windows, for example Explorer won't be used for the shell anymore, but rather a separate shell program.
I'm still running Windows 10 on my main computer. Partially because I don't want to go through the hassle of updating and then reinstalling a bunch of stuff, but also because I prefer the Windows 10 live tiles since I can set them all to small and have 86 start menu items.
My server machine is Running Windows 10 Pro with Windows update disabled, and my laptop is running Windows 11 Pro, since that's what it shipped with (though I did reinstall it when I got the device to wipe any potential bloat).
I'll just stick with Windows 10 as long as it works...

My biggest issue with modern Windows is just a hyperinflation of ads being injected in every spot possible. Just switching off of Edge creates a huge amount of spam they throw at you to try to stop you.
I just want a real start menu and right click functionality without getting 3rd party apps or registry edits. 11’s biggest sin, at least in my book, was trying to streamline their UI too much across all versions. Why wouldn’t the Pro version have expanded UI elements as at least an option?
My last version of windows was 7. I think that was the best version as it did not have the telemetry (ms spying) and it was very stable. I am happily on Linux these days and ms will have to do something special for me to go back to windows (very unlikely it would seem).

I've quit windows almost entirely and switched to linux; now I never have to worry about my hardware becoming to old or my OS becoming completely unsupported since I am on an arch based distro called garuda linux. Been really smooht sailing, hardly any issues and I like that updates for software and the OS are all in 1 place
Switching to Linux is the best decision I've made. It certainly isn't for everyone yet but considering most people just use a web browser on their pc I think it's not as much of a problem

The Steam Deck is Linux-based. It seems to be doing quite well, judging from Microsoft’s attempt to fight back with this “Handheld Mode” vapourware.
I've had hardly any issues with gaming on Linux, most my steam games work and Minecraft works just fine. **Only** thing I still use Windows for (for now) is VR.

My gut feeling is that the slow adoption rate for Win11 is the hardware requirements. I use Windows 10 for gaming and my over 5 year old PC can handle most of the stuff I want to play. Including the few VR games I grew to like. Meanwhile Windows 11 tells me I need new motherboard, new CPU and that means I also need new RAM. With these 3 combined, it's only sane to get a new PSU and cooling. All that for what? I've been using Vista in the past, bugs are never the problem, those can always be patched. But with silicon prices and scalping being the new industry norm, Microsoft can blow me.

It could be this OR the fact that people are highly hesitant to the GUI / GUX changes in an OS they have little-to-no use.
I would have updated, but the compatibility check says I my PC doesn't meet requirements, yet it runs everything in Windows 10 smoothly. I am not spending extra to upgrade this when I'm primarily a Mac user now anyway and only log in rarely now (mainly to do updates and try to work through old files to decide what to keep).

@@Mario583a My own theory (which I probably have because it's my own reasoning) is that there just hasn't been enough time since the release of Windows 10. I would imagine that most people just stick with whatever their computer came with and only "update" when they get a new computer with the newer operating system. (Again, that seems to be how it goes for me. I did look at the new features in Windows 11, nothing stood out as a must have, and while I wasn't aware of any issues with Windows 11 at the time, I didn't see a need to update a system that basically already does exactly what I want it to.)
Look at any of the deeper settings panels and you’ll see they haven’t changed since windows 95. They need to do a complete UI overhaul similar to what Apple did when they went from os9 to osx.
Every time I hear how the next Windows is "developed from the ground up". Same as for 11, unlike the statement in this video that 11 is just a reskin of 10. That's why the taskbar doesn't have basic features like "never combine", because it wasn't developed. If it was just a redesign we would have it from the start with a regedit

I was pretty happy with Win 11 at the outset.
I loved the apps that ran on the desktop in Vista, I had this large 24 hour analog clock but I was eventually compelled to remove it to be “more secure”.
I'd like to see an operating system that's so solid it doesn't need monthly updates. I have to question if the UI changes are really an improvement, or just there to keep programmers employed.
They have to keep the OS updated with security fixes for the OS, if monthly updates stopped, you would be vulnerable to viruses and malware.
As someone who works in the industry, I have to say the UI changes are far from an improvement. Visually - yeah, they look nicer. Functionality-wise, it's hot garbage.

I've tried 365 and nearly tossed my laptop out of the window because it really caused a lot of issues in a document I was working on. 3:55 I think it would be good Idea for microsoft to rebuild the OS from scratch. There are so many legace features in windows that you would not really need anymore. But they should implement alle of them in the new OS. I still find myself using the old system control panel instead of the "new" settings app.
I'd be sticking to win 10 untill I know that I can still have control in a newer version of windows like disabling telemetry and control around what and when system updates get applied. And no advertising in the OS either. In the scenario that its not obtainable anymore and win 10 becomes too much of a security risk, I would probably just give in and switch to linux instead.
You can't disable telemetry in Windows 10 though. Not if you use the "Home" or "Professional" versions.

@@CPUGaming No, you can't. If you have the "home" or "professional" version of Windows it always sends "required" telemetry. No matter what you do. Editing the registry doesn't help (which is what 3rd party tools often do). Using the GPE doesn't do anything either.
There is a setting in the GPE that seemingly allows you to disable telemetry and so it gives you the false impression that it can be done. But it doesn't work. Windows doesn't respect this setting unless you have the "enterprise" version.

Thio, I use current version of windows 11 pro and am wondering if when it updates later to 23H2 if I will lose all my desktop customizations such as my Webshots Wallpaper and choices of other colors or if the Open Shell Start Menu will be affected ? Can we still use the older look of File Explorer after it upgrades to 23H2 or worse to Windows 12 when it does come out ? ? I don' t mind new features as long as I am not forced to use them as default and my current preferences are retained.
