To whom ever wrote for Pres. Biden tonight, I felt disappointed for the lack of depth and detail not spoken for in Joni's honor. Considering her depth of poignant verse and her evolution of musical sophistication which makes up a lifetime of work. There just wasn't enough said about what makes her work so unique. Paul McCartney will go down in history as maybe the most prolific songwriter of our time, but considering Joni Mitchell, I would have to give that some serious thought.
The Biden admin is a great disappointment on many issues beyond culture, IMO,@@annode... I worry that things are going so poorly that the Repubs will retake the White House (along with the Congress), which is a lot more devastating to all of us than any diss toward Joni.

I believe those honorees were relieved that they weren't subjected to the blowhard who unfortunately occupied 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue at that time.

To appreciate the arts you must have a certain intellectual and empathetic nature for understanding and appreciation. The last office holder lacked grace, class and empathy, his soul is missing thus no appreciation for the arts. Yes, this is a wonderful and lifting experience that we America, can once again appreciate.

His only appreciation for the arts is the ostentatious display of marble and 24-carat gold in his New York apartment. When his White House staff asked the Guggenheim Museum to lend him a Van Gogh, they righteously offered a gold toilet instead. Fast food damages oil paintings.

This is so lovely to see again. Regardless of who the president is, or what party, I've always felt the acknowledgment of excellence in the arts through the Kennedy Center Honors is a wonderful celebration and acknowledgment from the White House on behalf of the American people.
To be accurate, all presidents but ONE notable exception have embraced the Kennedy Center Honors.
So genuine to recognize great hearts. Thank you President Biden.

He is so eloquent! Finally, a breath of fresh air honoring the soul and face of America during these crazy times. Incredibly moving as he honored everyone! Joni, Bette, Barry Gordy, etc. this video is spectacular! Thank you for posting it before the TV show next Wednesday. Just to listen to POTUS speak with this admiration is so nice. His speech writers knocked it out of the park and he delivered! Even calling out Steve Martin who was in the small audience . Would have loved to be there😄. Feels like I was🐘

Most them in just for singing, acting, etc. She has been relevant for over 80 years in Hollywood and broke down a lot of walls. Like when the told her they wanted to take her show from local TV to national TV. But if she wanted to she would have to fire her only black band member. She refused and said if he's not part of MY show then you don't have MY show. That should answer your question.

Well, there are so many people who could be honored. Many have died before they could be honored. It's the same with the occasional odd priorities in choosing new members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Finally a real leader who informs and comforts us in hard times. A wonderful tribute to some of our national treasures.

He always seem to speak so genuinely and makes each artist feel so special.

Bette Midler has been performing longer than Biden said. She was performing her album The Divine Miss M in the mid to late 80’s. I let my coworker/friend name my car after a character on that album - Sophie. I can still her her saying: So, Soph (for short). I had Sophie I & Sophie II - Sophie Stanza. Sadly, that friend passed away from AIDS in his late 30’s. So young and way too soon. He was getting some kind of treatment in Dallas. I think all they did was draw out his blood and do what Lance Armstrong did during the Tour de France. You know how it was in the 80’s, people dying all over the world. We lost a lot of wonderful people. 💔😭 Anyway, I’m happy to see the Kennedy Honors restored and welcomed by that speech. 🏅👏🏼

It's time to honor Celine Dion. Before it's too late. She was first one, to break the glass ceiling, to be as commercially successful as men of her time. She was selling album every second, which was still a thing that MJ, would do. She is critically acclaimed (oscar, grammy, GG, BMA), commercially successful (2nd best selling female as in 2021), had great impact on music industry (adele and ariana and their obsession admirable for her, and Celines impact on their music is visible. It just seems late that she isn't honored yet. Her contribution to American culture is immense and her honor is long overdue. 🥰🥰
There is still plenty of time for Celine. The average age of these 5 honourees is 81. Berry gordy is 92 for the love of god. Celine is 53. Maybe in 20 years it will be her time.

@@analevy4034 Being an American citizen is not a criteria for being honoured, for instance Paul McCartney was honoured in 2010, and I can't find anything stating that Joni has gained US citizenship.

I was pulling for all the honorees in this class except Justino (I guess I'm not up on the fine arts). Next year I'd pick Burt Bacharach, Cynthia Gregory, Spike Lee, Liza Minelli and Arturo Sandoval.

I noticed Justino got the shortest speech of all the honorees. It's a shame that the KCH have drifted away from the fine arts, so those in opera, dance or classical music only get one of the five slots a year and usually the shortest tribute.
Next year’s picks should be Jane Fonda, Arturo Sandoval, Whoopi Goldberg, Mick Jagger & Keith Richards and Frankie Valli
