People this was 1957!! New sound of what was to come by a SUPER talented artist who would influence tons of artists who followed. They were the First white band to play Harlems famed Apollo theater. They were booked by accident, but Buddy insisted they play. At first they were booed, until Buddy started playing and he BROUGHT THE HOUSE DOWN to a standing ovation! True story. The legend was taken in that horrible plane crash which also took the lives of Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. Buddy was only 22ys old. I love his music.
They did not boo, they were polite and quiet. They were surprised and did not know what to expect. When he began to play his guitar and sing, they loved him. So sad he and Little Richie Valens died so young (only 17) Richie was Puerto Rican; his real name was not Valens. His short life story was made into a film. "The Buddy Holly Story" also a great film. Both films were made in the 80s or early 90s. Check Wikipedia for info on both of these huge stars of the 1950s.
@@hooleyqueen that movie was inaccurate BS. In real life they were booed at the Apollo for the first few nights, it wasn't till they played Bo Diddley that they won the crowd over.

Buddy Holly is from Lubbock Texas. My dad went to school with him, and has a yearbook signed by Buddy. Sadly, February 3, 1959 was the day the musics died. He was only 23 when he died in that plane crash. He was a heavy influence on the Beatles, The Stones, The Who,, Clapton, and the whole British Invasion. He was one of the first to have the classic rock lineup. Guitar Bass and Drums. He arranged and wrote most of his own music. There is no telling how big he would have been if that plane did not crash in Clear Lake Iowa.
I always loved Buddy's guitar solo in That'll Be The Day. He has so many great songs, too. He wrote them, played them, helped produce them. Just an incredible talent.
"That'll Be The Day" is my favorite Buddy Holly song but there are so many to listen to. When you can also check out "Words of Love," "It's So Easy," "Maybe Baby," "Well... All Right," "Oh Boy," and "You're the One" among the others.
Buddy Holly's last performance was in Clear Lake, Iowa at the Surf Ballroon with Richie Vallens and the Big Bopper. They died that night (Feb. 3rd) after only getting a couple of miles out of town. He is huge around here still and every year on February 3rd and that weekend we recreate the "sock hop" at the Surf Ballroom.
He was 21 here! He died at 22. He’s arguably the second most influential singles artist in music history behind Bob Dylan despite being popular for about two years. He was so far ahead of his time it’s hard to fathom. I remember my dad telling me one time that had Holly lived, he would have been bigger than Elvis. He was a better songwriter, was already doing things in 1958 Elvis and others could only dream of, and, unlike Elvis, EVERYONE liked Holly. Such a shame. Great, great artist.
True legend! Buddy was one of the main artists of Rock n Roll 50's style. Too hard to choose a song, but my personal favourite is words of love. I've been fortunate to relive the 50's through the rockabilly revival of the late 70's and 80's which not only happened in the UK, but through Rockin' Ronnie Weiser was big in LA too. Although still very underground. Rebel beat 2007 La rockabilly story is well worth a watch.
Gary Busey starred as Buddy Holly in the movie and when that part of the movie came on, Gary Busey nailed that performance... He should have got an Oscar for his role as Buddy, but he didn't...
you mean musicians it was Buddy Holly and the crickets...J.I. Allison ,Joe.B mauldin and Nikki Sullivan.........the whole band are the first whites to play the Apollo theatre......
The Buddy Holly Story movie was wildly inaccurate in places including the Apollo performance. They weren't the first white artists to perform and the crowd was very receptive from the moment they were introduced as their music was well known on the radio at the time.
@@stpnwlf9 they were the first white act to appear at the Apollo theater ... they were accidentally booked because they thought they were getting the black doowop group also named the Crickets that came out a few years earlier.........they were also the first white act to be booked on a all black tour after the Apollo shows.....they went on tour with all the black artist's that performed at the Apollo theater the same time they did.......the movie got some things wrong but the filmmakers got a lot of facts right too.......
Buddy didn't get enough credit for his innovative Rock and Roll sound and guitar work. Only a few were in his class in that time period, Chuck Berry, of course is one!
Richard Brewer, I am a Peggy Sue, born in 1959. One of my daughter's 20 yr old friends recently heard "Peggy Sue" & she called & asked if I had ever heard of this guy named Buddy Holly. LOL When my daughter was about 6, she saw an Elvis video & she said, "Mom! There was this guy and he was SO handsome & he sang so good & his name was Elvis Kresley! Have you heard of him?" "Elvis Kresley? Yes! I've heard of that guy!" ;)
Thank you for your reaction 😀. My favorite tune is True Love Ways& just think people thought they were black;so much so record label was preparing to market a colored group until meeting them in person!!
Buddy Holly is one of my favorite artists. I actually just finished writing an entire college thesis about his contribution to the world of rock music and his lasting legacy. In short, the genre of rock n' roll would not have seen its boom in the 1960s without him. His style of rock music, his guitar playing, and his image directly inspired some of the biggest names in rock music. The Beatles were directly inspired by Holly's image and music, so were the Rolling Stones. He was one of the first to use a Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, which is a staple in rock music. Buddy Holly died at the age of 22, but he arguably had just as much, if not MORE influence than the King himself, Elvis Presley. Elvis even regarded him as one of the most unique artists in rock music. By the way, his name is pronounced like the Christmas thing. "Haw-lee". Not "holy". But that's just me being nit-picky haha. My personal favorite Buddy Holly song is called "Oh Boy!". If you like faster-paced, more rock n' roll-sounding music, that's definitely my recommendation. Also fun fact with the "tribal" drums of Peggy Sue, the drummer Jerry Allison used that beat as a warm-up, but Holly liked the sound it created with the guitar and vocals, so they kept it!
Buddy Holly is one of my heroes and one of the architects of rock 'n' roll. Thanks for making this video, and I'm glad you like him. First of all, I encourage you to listen to the original recording of "Peggy Sue" rather than the Ed Sullivan appearance -- especially if you love Jerry Allison's drumming. The guitar solo on that recording is legendary. More Buddy Holly songs you should check out: "Oh Boy" (probably my favorite) "Everyday" (the instrument you hear is called a celesta. It's not a glockenspiel; the movie got that wrong.) "Think It Over" "Words of Love" (first double-tracked rock 'n' roll song) "Not Fade Away" "Rock Me My Baby" (not one of his hits, but a lot of fun) "Maybe Baby" "Rave On" "Heartbeat" "It's So Easy" "True Love Ways" (played it at my wedding) "Well ... All Right" (a stunning song way ahead of its time) And once you've got that Holly sound in your head, I highly encourage you to listen to Big Daddy's version of "Purple Rain": ruclips.net/video/-mDWerJ1KiI/видео.html
On your country comment, this is exactly when the youth broke from country and he was the first to start rock and roll and everyone followed after him.
He was only 22 when he passed away . Rave on was his last hit with the Crickets , he made a lot of hits with the Crickets . He had a love for music he liked Rock and Roll and started with Country music with Buddy Holly and Bob . 1955 - 1959 .
Buddy Holly, love his songs they are uplifting. He was raised in West Tx., Lubbock. Known for wonderful songs and great ability shows in his gift of song writing as well as singing. Early. 1960s. I also would suggest True Love Ways. Fatally killed in plane wreck along with two or three other singers. Actually plane killed him in 1950s. So he mostly had career in 1950s. I also love Maybe Baby.
Peggy Sue lived in Lubbock, TX still & passed away in 2018. She’d be at music festivals well into her 70s in her short shorts, taking pictures & signing autographs. Forever immortalized.
I’ve loved Buddy Holly since like... probably since I was born. I have my dad to thank for that; we used to sing That’ll Be the Day together all the time.
The beginnings of Rock and Roll...great music! Peggy Sue reminds me of an old friend that would write songs with a girl's name as the title. He would play to her (in a club) and take her home at the end of the night. The next night he would be playing in a different club and he would change the name to another girl...and take her home. He had a different name for that song every night. It was fun to watch!
Buddy Holly was from Lubbock Texas hence the country vibe. His chords, progressions, vocal style, and harmonies set the standard for rock-n-roll forever
Buddy was from Texas. I think that was why his vocals are so different. He played what's known as chord leads, not single string. Buddy broke through the lock of gospel and country music of his era. A true Texan Maverick.
"That'll be the day that I die" is the reference that Don McClain used in "American Pie". In that song ?Don was lamenting Buddy's death in a plane crash.
My father was the same age, and lived in the same region (West Texas) as Holly. He saw him play in small bars, roller rinks....and I don't think dad was ever the same after Holly died. I actually lived in Holly's birth home in college. Dad refused to walk in the door.
He was a pioneer and influenced so many that followed. I like his song 'Everyday' probably the best. It's not his most famous song but a cute little thing to sing in the shower.
Buddy Holly-February made me shiver, with every paper I deliver. Bad news on the doorstep, I couldn't take one more step. I can't remember if I cried, when I read about his widow bride. Something touched me deep inside, the day the music died. That was about Buddy Holly from the song "American Pie."
"Oh Boy!" Is another great Buddy Holly song. He died in a plane crash in Feb of 1959. Along with Richie Valens & The Big Bopper, "the day the music died" as Don Maclean says in American Pie. The song, not the movie...Lol
Yay the classic rockers just so you know also people are mentioning the day the music died the song American pie by Don Mclean and that’s what he’s talking about the day of the plane crash with the big bopper Ritchie Valens who sang La Bamba and Buddy Holly

He arranged and wrote most of his own music. There is no telling how big he would have been if that plane did not crash in Clear Lake Iowa.
YES!!!. I’ve been waiting for your to react to Buddy Holly!!!! I can’t wait for more Buddy Holly reactions from you. Buddy’s music is all 50’s music.
Buddy was a pioneer in Rock n Roll. Such a talent gone before his prime.
My dad loved this artist & I like him also!! Plus he lived near Clear Lake Iowa as a teenager.
He is huge around here still and every year on February 3rd and that weekend we recreate the "sock hop" at the Surf Ballroom.
he is the father of rock n roll .
I agree with Edwin I would like to see you react to "True Love Ways" thank you.
First white musician to play at the apollo theatre
True
The pioneer of rock ‘n’ roll Buddy Holly 🔥 Doesn’t get the respect he deserves for what he did in such a short space of time, he was a genius.
His name is pronounced Holly like Hollywood or Christmas holly.
Lol hollywood
She has trouble reading anything.
👍🎯
Classic Rock n Roll!!!
Buddy played what had never been heard before him! Greatest!
More Buddy Holly songs you should check out:
"Oh Boy" (probably my favorite)
"Everyday" (the instrument you hear is called a celesta. It's not a glockenspiel; the movie got that wrong.)
"Think It Over"
"Words of Love" (first double-tracked rock 'n' roll song)
"Not Fade Away"
"Rock Me My Baby" (not one of his hits, but a lot of fun)
"Maybe Baby"
"Rave On"
"Heartbeat"
"It's So Easy"
"True Love Ways" (played it at my wedding)
"Well ... All Right" (a stunning song way ahead of its time)
And once you've got that Holly sound in your head, I highly encourage you to listen to Big Daddy's version of "Purple Rain":

So, so good
His last name is pronounced Holly like the Christmas song " have a Holly jolly Christmas, it's the best time of the year"
allways the greatest. one take on song and one voice
Peggy Sue lived in Lubbock, TX still & passed away in 2018. She’d be at music festivals well into her 70s in her short shorts, taking pictures & signing autographs. Forever immortalized.
The days where wearing a suit with a bow tie was considered rock 'n roll.
I’ve loved Buddy Holly since like... probably since I was born. I have my dad to thank for that; we used to sing That’ll Be the Day together all the time.
Buddy Holly is my biggest influence for my original music.
Thank you so much for playing Buddy Holly He was my late husband of 39yrs favorite singer
True love ways is a thing of beauty. The orchestral arrangement is glorious
Buddy.......... the real deal right there 👊🏼🔥❤
Buddy was from Texas. I think that was why his vocals are so different. He played what's known as chord leads, not single string. Buddy broke through the lock of gospel and country music of his era. A true Texan Maverick.
Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly are my youth's hero's
Hey, you,re giving respect for art and history, as well as being a great lady, and you,re a sweetheart, I hope my wife did,nt see that
"That'll be the day that I die" is the reference that Don McClain used in "American Pie". In that song ?Don was lamenting Buddy's death in a plane crash.
Buddy Holly is my spirit animal and the reason im a guitarist.
Oh boy and that'll be the day two of alot of great song by him
I recommend one of his few ballads "True Love Ways"
