      I feel just as lucky having grown up listening to this era of music in the 80s and 90s. Dad always had "the oldies" station on. I think that's what helped me appreciate many years and genres of music. But the 50s and 60s will always be one of, if not my favorite times in music.

    • @johnr8309
      @johnr8309 4 года назад +5

      @@Watthead80 As an old man thinking back through the music from the 50's to the 80's, each was a reflection of the times. The 50's were rock and roll. Fun times. The worries were the Friday night football game or the prom or just being cool. Kind of like the sitcom "Happy Days". The 60's and early 70's were market by revolution. Much more serious times mostly marked by the Vietnam war and the advent of hard drugs. Living through a war and a draft as a teenager was no piece of cake. Classmates killed and maimed for life. Families torn apart over the obligation to put on a uniform and serve or peacefully resist. Those were the worst of times. The late 70's and early 80's were really the disco years. Like the 50's, a return to fun and peace in the world. The mid and late 80's I would call the advent of blending audio/video. I think they called it MTV at first. You not only heard the artists but watched them as well. After that, you know more about it than me.

      @@johnr8309 Awesome! Glad to see that through your eyes, sir. Our Marine brother missed the Korean War by a few years, but our 2 youngest were just in time for Vietnam. One was in the Air Force and was an MP guarding an ammo dump. He was talking to his partner one night before he went to bed. The next morning, the partner was gone and so was his bunk. That might be part of the reason Gary Marshall came up with something like 'Happy Days', to help those who lived through some bad stuff recall the good, old days. Our other brother went Army and over to Germany. I don't know why the military respected the 'Sullivan Act' with some and not other brothers. Some from the old neighborhood were able to pass each others' units and maybe share a story and a smoke, before heading somewhere else, over there. Jim and Charlie both made it home and so did our brother. I think getting back to the music may have helped some.

    Dear India,
    I was a 15 year old in 1964 working at the A&W drive-in restaurant in Kitchener Ontario when a co-worker suggested I invite Erica, another co-worker, to see Jay and the Americans who were appearing at Waterloo Lutheran University. I finally summoned the courage to invite her and away we went. Neither of us had any idea what we were going to see but the show was wonderful. As soon as I could scrape the money together (I was earning 75 cents per hour) I bought their album and wore it out. Thanks for bringing back some great memories with music that has stood the test of time.

    Other great songs by Jay & the Americans "This Magic Moment", "Walkin' in the Rain", "Crying", "Only in America", "Lets Lock The Door (and throw away the key). I was 12 in 1964 and this was the end of the era of love songs begun in the fifties. Rock bands were coming on strong writing their own songs and long jam driven pieces of music were coming. I love all these songs and the singing & musical abilities, no auto tune or sampling. Each era has produced great musicians & masterpieces, music is the great unifier.

    Jay has got a very wonderful strong voice and probably never had to practice in his whole life. Jay did not write Cara Mia but he re-vamped that song back when he was early twenties I reckon. Probably one of the highest voices that a male can sing. I don't know if anyone has beaten him yet. He is still alive and around 81 or 82 years old he just had a birthday. He's retired n not singing no more. He was singing up until maybe 7 years ago and could still carry a tune. Those are the good old days when music was recognizable and they had good voices behind it. And I mean voices that can actually carry a tune and sound manly at the same time.... (And not screaming like Michael Bolton) To me I think Jay is so equal to Elvis's voice. I absolutely Love the song "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Walking in the rain". Those two songs will be so addictive to you that you would want to put them on full blast when you get in the car.....almost EVERYDAY!! ENJOY!!

    I love these reactions! They don't know what they are missing until the rediscover some of these greats! I was born in 1980 and since I was in my early 20s I've loved the music from the 60s. I have a decent record collection, about 100 albums. I've been searching for Jay Black and the Americans with Cara Mia on it... I can only seem to find the albums that don't have this song...
    Also, I'm familiar with this group going as far back as Jay Traynor from the late 50s even though they didn't get their breakthrough until their first big hit She Cried in 1962, all the way through to their last biggest song There Goes My Baby from 71 before they split in 73.
    It didn't matter which singer, Jay and the Americans are a masterpiece! And they had other great songs such as Come A Little Bit Closer, This Magic Moment, Hushabye, and others... However, Cara Mia to me really shows Jay (David) Black his vocal talents! Yes, his original name is David and he agreed to adopt the name Jay Black to keep the name of the group as Jay and the Americans! This to me is the staple of American Pop Culture Music at its peak with Caria Mia from 1965. He set the bar with his vocal tones!
    There were many other groups and solo artists in this area that were superb, but I believe this song can rival any other song in History! It's not necessarily my favorite song of all time, but I think it is probably one of the Best Songs of All Time! Even as good as Elvis was, this song by Jay Black would definitely give him a run for his money! As good as Sinatra was, this song would give him a run for his money. Even as good as The Four Seasons were with a new #1, 2 or 3 each and every week, this song would give them a run for their money! Even the powerful duo with harmony and soul, the Righteous Brothers, again this song would given them a run for their money!
    I would love to see more of this younger generation do reaction videos on this song. I've seen quite a few popular reaction video channels and yet so few have done this song! Please, let's make this song popular again!

      I would go with "Some Enchanted Evening" for another great Jay Black vocal exercise.

    I heard Jay tell the story in concert in Boston that he had "recorded" "Come a Little Bit Closer" merely as a rough "scratch track," where he was simply getting a feel for the lyrics. In his words, he was simply reading the lyrics from the sheet music aloud, not actually singing the way he normally would. He had plans to actually properly record the song later, when he and the Americans came off the road. When he heard the tune on the radio he called up his record company, furious that they had released a walk-through. If I recall correctly, he hadn't actually even known that they had kept the recording. When the record label told him the song was racing up the charts, well, he realized it was too late. THAT's how good he was --- he had a smash hit simply reading. I guess that's what he would have sounded like narrating an audio book...

    I love "Come A Little Closer". 3 random suggestions for you... Gene Chandler's "Duke of Earl", Marty Robins' "El Paso", and Aaron Neville's "Tell It Like It Is"

    'How come no one has mentioned 'Livin' above your Head'? I would hear it from time to time, over the sound system at work, and the damn Radio Jock would never say who the hell it was by. It took me years to find out that it was Jay and The Americans. What a crackin' song!
