    wow I remember seeing a video of one of these off of a oil rig and how mysterious it was, and now I'm watching this video in such great quality.

    So mysterious! I'm so happy more and more footage of the magnapinna is available. Definitely one of if not my favorite species of squid!

    Interesting to note: it seems like this squid is missing one of its arms. You can see this clearly at 4:22
    Big shout out to u/angrystoma on reddit for spotting this one.

      You sir\miss, now have another subscribee. So little is known about this and many other deep sea cephalopods, though from what I have read the big fin, is the deepest dwelling knowing squid. If any of these big fin squids could collect royalties, I think Bungie and Microsoft owes them quite a bit in back pay.

      Hello ehm im a bit late but i saw that one arm doesnt have a fillament. I think this could be a male and the arm without the fillament is the reproducing arm. Because we saw that on more magnapinnas (or it also could be bitten off)

  • @lucasnofsinger7608

    I wonder if the pulling wasn't some other organism biting on the arm of the squid? Given how quickly the big fin swam away after being pulled off course.

      I'm also very interested in this particular movement. If you check out the video I uploaded on the 21st of January titled Bigfin Squid Spotted 2020 we can observe a similar behaviour. I time stampped it on the description of that video. Hopefully as more footage comes in we will learn more about this amazing squid and start to understand some of its mysteries.

    Omg. So exotic and so cute with those big fins flapping away. After it moves and is horizontal it's long tendril like tentacles remind me of a squid that's fishing .casting out 6 or more lines but those lines are actually it's elongated tentacles. It's completely alien and yet it isn't because it's probably been down there and the deep dark ocean depths for longer than humans have been around. It's just so hard to believe did something so amazing actually exist. I know people want to see the giant squid but many of these other obscure almost esoteric squid species is what really captures my imagination. that one that was documented that looked like a UFO was completely outstanding. Go cephalopods go! 🏁

    2:04 Agree, such a missed opportunity to see what could possibly be one of the squids predators... also, 2:38 look how damn long that arm is! Do they have a spring system on those tentacles that allows them to shrink & retreat at a moments notice? Because all those tentacles look like 1/6 of the original length besides the one that was getting pulled. Thats so sick.

    • @MagnapinnaArchive

      Some observations have suggested at a possible coiling mechanism on the fillaments, though there is much we still don't know about it.

    • @sportyginger
      @sportyginger 2 года назад +1

      It seemed to me the tentacle looked like it was getting thicker at the end when it was “stretched out”; maybe that thicker section wasn’t the tentacle, and it was a creature hanging on to it. Just a thought, though!

    Something about the way the squid moves it's fins to swim is just oddly satisfying.

  • @sportyginger
    @sportyginger 2 года назад +3

    It seemed, to me, like the squid was swimming away rather than hunting. As it swam away it did not pull its tentacles back toward it’s body (where one might pressume the mouth is). Also, it’s tentacles seem very stretchy, as when that particular one was stuck down below it was almost TWICE the length of the others! Unnerving, yet fascinating stuff!

    • @sportyginger
      @sportyginger 2 года назад +1

      Or, maybe the reason the tentacle looked so long was because it got caught on sea weed OR an eel like creature was attached to the end of it. Based on how little light is in these depths, though, the sea weed hypothesis wouldn’t be very supported, as I assume sea weed can’t grow.

    1:59 I see there’d one appendage here that’s much shorter than the others, did this one possibly get its tentacle ripped off or do these squid have one appendage shorter than the others?
    Edit: just saw your pinned comment lol!

    4:20 is it just me or does it seem like one of the poor guys arms (or tentacles, it’s real hard to tell the difference with these guys) got ripped off or something? Do we know if this species can regrow their appendages? I would assume so, but then again, big fins are pretty strange

      As most things of the ocean and seas are. A reason we aren’t terrified of things is because we are used to them, and they don’t try to kill us most of the time! If we saw this thing everyday and determined it was harmless to us, it would be just like a leaf. Normal, safe, okay to be around.
