The reason the Chinese rejected the Dalai Lama's choice is because the Panchen Lama chooses the next Dalai Lama, and the Chinese want control over this. They took the young boy away from Tibet and some say he is drugged and brainwashed. I know many lamas and monks who escaped the Chinese over the Himalayas while being strafed by war planes.

PLA had some Russian war planes in Tibet at the time of exile. Those war planes would have had a tough time flying even the lower part of the Himalayas. Did those Lamas and monks tell you that they were strafed by war planes while they were crossing the Himalayas?
The wartime exile took place in 1959. This is now 2024. It was 65 years ago. The minimum age for novice monks was 7 or 8 years old. So, the youngest monks you know are at least 72 years old. Correct?
As for Lamas, meaning spiritual teacher or guru, they need to have decades of Buddhism training. By now, they must be at least in their 90's. And, you know many of these Lamas and monks who were strafed by war planes when they walked over the Himalayas? Did they say where they were going? Are they still alive?

I don't take a position on the Free Tibet/Part of China argument. I can understand taking sides though, but I wish they would see a fuller picture before deciding which side to take, instead of blindly chanting the slogans.
I have studied Tibetan and Chinese history a bit. My interest is not politics, but the well being of the People, and their Arts and Culture. For Tibetans, I especially like Gorshey and the neo Chupa fashion. I wish the Tibetan people all the happiness in the world!
I spent a month in Tibet traveling from Lhasa to Mt Kailash and walked the 3-day pilgrimage during Saga Dawa. The Tibetans are a gentle people from a time past. Unfortunately even in the farthest reaches of the territory, the Chinese have set up businesses and slowly but surely turning it into a merchant economy.
The Chinese are hyper competitive as individuals and as a society whereas Tibetans are generally more religious, family-oriented and do not see making money as a top priority.
There are thriving Tibetan societies in Ladakh, Bhutan and other countries but in China, minorities that do not worship money are destined for servitude.

Unable to resist the power of money, haha. Everyone in the world wants to immigrate to developed countries, so why haven't I heard of immigrating to so-called democratic countries, India, the Philippines, etc.? It seems that people all over the world cannot resist the temptation of money.
Sounds like you want them to be primitive and backward. Of course there are Ministry of cultural relics and Culture in Tibet that safeguards their culture there and many Tibetans have taken businesses seriously.

The common belief is that Tibet and Tibetans ought to be preserved as a pet culture, keeping them as a living past to be experienced by outsiders to satisfy their adventurous urge when they can afford to trek there. Tibetans' desire for better health care and therefore longer life span, knowledge, and upward mobility be damned!

i worked at a truffle farm, and one of the most frequent issues was with Chinese tourists flushing things down the toilet. Here, we are not connected to the main sewer, so it caused big issues. I think this happened maybe 10 times in a year, and only happened when we had chinese tourists. the groups were small, 5- 10 people.

Tibetans looks like how Mongolia was when we came out of Manchurian colony back in 1911. No new infrastructures, nothing is built worthwhile and not given proper education. This is why China is unfair. Thank god after the Manchurian Dynasty fall Mongols separated ourselves out of China. Otherwise we would have been living this sort of life. It looks really backwards. As a Mongolian I feel so much connection to Tibetan people and customs. However if Tibet does not come out of Chinese colony they would even lose their language and customs. I can't even tell if the people are speaking in Tibetan or Chinese! That is a bad news for a country.
