This is a great video! I just finished building the FliteTest Mini Guinea but wasn't sure how to set up the differential. I followed your instructions and it worked first time. By the way, I watched one of your setup videos when I first got my DX9, and I am amazed here to see how much your English has improved I gave you a thumbs up and subscribed. :)
I just wanted to note that there is a safety issue with this system. When I first set this up, my AUX1 Channel was set to switch "D", which means that even when the differential thrust is not active, the motor will run if I accidentally touch this switch. The only way I have found to overcome this is to set it to "INH" instead of a switch, and then sub-trim the motor as well as possible, then re-calibrating the esc's so that they start at the same point and end at the same point. I just wanted to let you all know about this, and your video was very helpful when I set up differential thrust for the first time.
Your explanation is very clear and helpfull. I have a few questions: - do the props turn both the same direction? - can differential also be done with ducted fans? The reason for this question is, I am building a HO229 and besides steering with the ailerons, I will try differential as well.
The prop direction is controlled by switching wires from esc but yeah you can use these settings on contra rotating as well. More scale. Yeah it works with fans. But they will go the same direction.
@@ArcticRc "(....) fans going te same direction" But using differential, one fan (or the other) will turn less revolutions compared to the other and thus therefore support cornering (assisting use of ailerons). I am right??
Do you know how to you get the throttle cut to work in this setup? If I enable it, it only stops the motor on the throttle channel from spinning up, but the motor that is plugged into AUX1 will still spin up when I add the throttle input.
I hope that I can program my Hitec Aurora 9 system for differential thrust, trim of each motor, and safety throttle lock of both motors on an EP DC-3 model. If not, I will at least need to sync both motors for equal thrust and have safety throttle lock. Video is enlightening about possibilities. Aurora 9 manual is hard to follow re mixes. Thanks!
Thank you for the video, very helpful. Can you please make a video explaining how to setup reverse thrust with an on/off switch? (Avios Bushmule with reversing ESC's)
Thanks for this tutorial - very good :-) I would like to also be able to fine-tune (sync) them as the ESC's on each motor are not "matched" - You say you cover this but I seems to have missed it? I am using a new Spektrum DX9 BE.
I'm OK with getting my diff thrust set up, but for the life of me, I can't get my throttle cut to affect both sides. I'm using an IX 14 now, but I had the same problem with my DX8.
Hi my name is tony ,I built the ying yang foam board plane thats on the cover of AMA magazine , I wonder if you could do a video on that set up , they show 3 wires going threw the wing and they cut the red wire , but ive done that and trying to program my radio but its a challenge ! can you help ?
They cut the red wire so that both bec's arent fighting eachother. You set them up the same way just plug both esc's into separate channels on the receiver.
setting up a new plane and my radio DX8 G2 wont let me pick RUD>Aux 3 ( my 2nd throttle.. I can get thottle to work normal but it wont go faster on one motor then the other.
I belive you must mix it the other way around. What receiver do you use. Mix throttle with rudder and lets say aux1 with rudder. It is importand that you also mix throttle with aux one so that the radio knows you have two throttle channels. Ps do the setup without props. Im sure i mention all this in the video Sir😊
@@ArcticRc I Appreciate the reply, I fooled with it more and finally got it to work, i had to start a brand new model memory in my DX8. i am using the new 8020T rx i had to put it on Aux3 that was the only one it would work with.
All fine and good but how do you set up Throttle Cut WITH Differential Thrust? Setting up Throttle cut as normal cuts only ONE motor. So how do you set Throttle Cut to cut BOTH motors?
@@ArcticRc - I don't think it is that simple. I tried it. It didn't work. Throttle cut is applied in a subset of the other programs. Mixes you put in override it.
In my counting it makes 6: 2 for throttle 2 for ailerons 1 for rudder 1 for elevator And I still need 7 channels? BTW, thanks for your video and response!!
@@jonaskislich1277 ok then there is a setting in the mixing that went wrong. I need to check it out. But i have the NX10 now but i should be able to create a file for you to use.
+ArcticRC, I'm connecting a motor (has only 2 wires), once I connect it, it goes constantly on. No fade or control over the speed, I can't make it stop once connected on. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to use a different motor type? My servos are working well but not the motors. THANKS
Ihab Mardini im not sure Sir. But two wires are most likely a brushed motor and im not sir the signal from the esc is like the brushless ones. I will try to check it out
I also have a few FT Sea Ducks. Here is my newest problem: During the maiden flight one of the ESCs burned up. I wasn't sure if it was the ESC or motor so I changed them both. Back to the field I go. Then the other ESC burned up. could it be just a bad batch of ECSs? or could it be a programming problem? Receiver? Do you have any ideas?
Ron G sounds like bad esc. What you wanna do is use two of a kind esc. When you power them up at the first time make sure your throttle stick is at high (remove props) :) wait for the first beeps then throttle down. And disconnect the battery. When you power them up again you should hear that the start up beeps are in sync. Ps. Better to use a bit larger esc than recomended.
This was very helpful, so thank you very much for making this video :3 One question, after setting my radio up as per your video, is it normal to get about 50% throttle at full throttle on the stick? It seems to reserve power for when you want to do turns at full stick throttle?

Would the type of receiver matter? You can buy them from 15 to 50 dollars. I am using an inexpensive orange rx, I also have a AR 610
