A 3D-printed castle (with your skilled 3D modeling) is obviously impressive, but does it have a peanut butter wing?

I truly respect both processes but I prefer the cardboard approach. The printer brings perfect architectural guidance for the base and the stories but the diverse materials have a vast array of finished looks. But this plastic castle is still mind blowing and I'd love to finish that. Great work and cool video!

What little we've seen of it I think your hand crafted one would look better in the end. I think something about actually doing it by hand, maybe the fact you can make adjustments to the design as you go and add little personal details quickly and easily to it (compared to adjusting resin on the main print) helps bring out character in the piece.
The 3d print is amazing and very obviously going to be faster every time, but I think overall quality hand crafted looks better.
Though I think **best** quality would be hand crafted with some 3d printed bits for details. Add 3d printed gothic windows and gragoyles and such to the castle.

for a fair comparison, I feel you need to factor in the time spent sculpting the castle as well as just printing it

Haha, yeah there's many ways you can compare it. Digitally Sculpting it took over a week of pre-work. But I do that for my physical builds too a lot of the time.

So not a fair comparison. The modeling time is part of the build time. Also despite what people are saying here there is no comparison between the quality and detail between the two. 3D printer wins hands down. It is going to look more detailed and solid every time because the small details cannot be done easily by hand. Hand made has a different feel but it's not better just different.

I mean, why not both? You work on the base while it gets the rest, you make the rough outline while it prints the details, you put some junk to good use and it cuts down on time requirements... Plus it'll keep you stuck to the project, since the printer's already in use, doing the latter half of the work FOR you, and keeping you there for safety concerns.
It's like that one scene from Futurama - "Why not make the guys pushing empty minecarts carry heavy machinery in them?"

Both works are inspiring, both require tremendous skill and effort. But I gotta say the higher "human" cost of the cardboard version comes through and it gives it a bit of something that is kinda missing in the 3D. Both are pride and praise worthy but the hand crafted element also puts organic mistakes in there (the bricks aren't all perfect) that makes it look more real and less display. As you said, 3D printers don't have "life gets in the way" problems. I wish I had the time to handcraft intricate D&D scenery, but I work about 65 hours a week. I can spend my free time crafting, or I can spend my free time playing. For a DM with a heavy work schedule, printing just makes a lot of sense. The printer can run while I'm at work, and 12 hours later I return home to a finished plate. Set it to run overnight, and I wake up to another completed job. By game night, I have the pieces I need (albeit often unpainted if I had to print the week of play, but players really just want to explore and kill bad guys anyway; I find they don't actually care all that much if it's just primed in grey or brown). The point is the story and the game, scenery and props are icing on the cake, and occasionally good visual aids for cover and line of sight mechanics.
All that said, I have huge respect for people who can and do take the time to hand craft beautiful custom setups. A lot of love goes into that, and everything is truly unique and special.
I don't think there's a "right" or "wrong" way to create terrain and scenery. If it's working, and you're having fun, then it's all good.
