You are correct! In "Treasure Planet" the ship we spend the majority of our time on (the R.L.S. Legacy after the author of "Treasure Island", Robert Louis Stevenson) has a fairly unique version of solar sails. In the film, the sails act as a method of gathering the energy of photons and turning it into the variety of energy needed to power the ship's engines, so that when they are out of reach of strong enough sun/starlight they aren't dead in space. The more light strikes the sails, the more power goes directly to the engines. A very fun bit of science fiction, and honestly one of my favorite depictions of space ships. Your sister ship is a beautiful piece, and as usual, your imagination and creativity are amazing to watch turn from idea into reality. Thank you so much for sharing your work and love of the hobby with all of us and inspiring more nerds to try our hands at crazy ideas.
I often liked how relatively early Disney was playing with themes from anime. Not really Disney but the two guys behind the TP project. Sorry, Knarb but I think a miss by not modeling the scalloped sails design. This is repeated in the sail the launch uses. I encourage people to read up on why the movie failed and it's planned sequel scrapped. I so enjoyed this movie close to my heart. My old man gifted me a 1st Ed. hardback of Treasure Island. One of my few beloved items. Semper Fi old man :)
pretty good on the rigging. the way you had the furled sails lashed down is definitely off, and i would've jury-rigged an entirely new set of chain-plates for the mainmast shrouds rather than having them go at that very weird angle. THANK YOU for having the flags go the right way though, that's huge.
No lie Treasure Planet is my favourite film, everything from the cast to the music to the animation is top notch. It was stuck in production hell for like 8 years before finally greenlit. One of the last Disney films to use 2D animation and was the last film to use their Deep Canvas engine to blend 2D and 3D elements and scenes, developed originally for Tarzan for the tree surfing scenes it was used for the whole runtime and used it to its limit. That ship fits in beautifuly and I can absolutely see Jim Pleiades Hawkins captaining her through the etherium winds.
I absolutely adore this project, and Treasure Planet is quite possibly my favourite Disney movie. A sadly underrated gem. My sole criticism is perhaps that the bow of the ship is a little light on the more steampunk aspects. Perhaps an ornate figurehead or ram would balance it out more with the rear, or what about an intricate cannon, like we saw in the movie, on top of the forecastle?
I think that many Airfix molds tend to be pretty ancient, making them prone to flash and warping. This model looks excellent. I like that you've mounted at flags blowing in the wind; as the ship is under sail; rather than trailing behind the mast, as if the ship was under power.
Another hidden gem that would go GREAT with this build: Atlantis. If you decide to build a space - submarine, you're BASICLY on your way to start a DnD Spelljammer campaign! Great stuff as always Knarb!
I always thought the movie "Treasure Planet" was an underrated gem, with lots of cool spaceships unlike anything else in Science Fiction, and you did a very good job capturing the movie's overall "look and feel" with your model. I hope this will be the start of a series of models set in a Science Fiction version of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" milieu; kind of like Boylei's iconic "Wild Imaginary West" series. (Where did you get those space pirate figures, by the way . . . ?) As an aside, I would imagine that any galactic civilization advanced enough to build warp-driven starships that look like 17th Century Tall Ships would be nobody to mess with. Even the Borg and the Daleks would be advised to pass them up . . . .
Thanks! As for the pirate models i searched "pirates" on myminifactory and got a few that I liked. Haha. Ill try and track down specific models if you are interested, but there's a ton of variety
Treasure Planet was another failure by Disney to properly market a really good movie... Much like "John Carter" (that title says it all; what happened to the "Warlord of Mars" part?), it could've done much better had Das Maus Reich actually promoted it properly. Speaking of John Carter, there's a lot of material there for mining modeling projects... =^[.]^=
@@KnarbMakes Thanks, but I don't have access to a 3D Printer, much less the ability to write software or code to make use of one. (Heck, I never even got a Dremel Tool.) That said, I've been building models for over half a century now, and I hope to build many more before I can't. For now, I'll tell you what I told Boylei: Keep up the good work - not just your actual building, but but also keeping the hobby alive and well into the next generation!
If someone decides to start building a Space Maritime universe the same way Boylei Hobbies is making a Weird West themed universe, I'd be super stoked.
It's worth looking into if using something like petroleum jelly or oil can be used to prevent the glue sticking to smooth plastic, I know it can work pretty well as a mold release for more unconventional mold materials which are not silicone, otherwise really great build!
I love kit bashing. Great modeling, thanks for sharing. You might want to invest in an oscillating cutter, it would have made cutting the boat into pieces much easier.
I can't speak for the actual reason given in the film, but I always figured it was to catch either solar winds or literally just light. Which does sound super sci-fi, but people are already working on making that kind of thing practical for deep space probes and stuff.
Amazing job! I use the same method to make the sails, but... I just use the plastic sails as a template to make the tissue paper ones. I apply a coat of Vaseline over the plastic sails and place the paper over them, then apply white glue and wait for it to dry. So they get thinner which is better for the scale. They come out easy and then you can give them the shape you want... for more folds or kneads as you like. Cheers
This is amazing, so glad someone finally made something from Treasure Planet! I’ve always loved it, when I was younger my little brother and I memorized the entire movie. Him doing Billy Bones was the best 😂
Glad I'm not the only one who loved Treasure Planet! The ship looks really cool, not really the RLS Legacy from the movie, but it definitely has the same vibes!
The Golden Hind will fit in fine in Treasure Planet. Probably as an example of early Terran Spacefaring when they're just beginning to start in the interstellar community.
In the movie, the sails are Solar Sails, which are an actual method of moving in space. Basically, you can propel an object away from the sun by catching a ride on the solar wind using a massive metallic foil sail. In treasure planet that’s what the sails are.
This was amazing! I only found your channel week and straight away you do a deep cut with one of the most underrated films. Well done sir you have made us treasure planet fans extremely proud.
I love watching you take on new skills.! Can I suggest a new project I think would be perfect for you? Elsa’s ice castle! Clear resin, your 3d printer, snowy terrain, leds…it would be epic.
When I watch your videos I feel simultaneously relaxed by your great voice and impressive artwork as well as stressed out by how much I don't understand what you are doing because it is so complex for my lil non-artist brain. I could watch your videos for days!
I never actually finished the movie as a child so still to this day I don’t know the ending but I remember a guy fell of the ship probably the main antagonist and they permanently fell horizontally or something
A fellow solder smoke blower 😂 This thing turned out so cool especially with all of the 3D modeled pieces to connect shapes here and there. Really inspiring! I saw you using a brush for wicking away super glue from those threads but give cotton swabs a go. The work perfectly for removing excess super glue without getting stuck and they cost almost nothing.
great model Boylei... I mean KNARB... Knarb.
This was a tribute
Still waiting on Bills water pistol terrain 😂
Great build, man! Good use for those LEDs!
It's funny I've had them in a box for a while waiting for just the right project. When I saw the kit was 1:72 scale, I had to do it.
Amazing ship. Treasure Planet is one of Disney's forgotten gems along with Atlantis. Great movies from the early 00s.
I prefer the Era of Alantis but absolutely love the whole abstract idea of Tressure Island
I love how close-knit the RUclips crafting community is. You guys are always uplifting each other and its so great to see.

This is great! I haven't seen Treasure Planet, but I love your offset design after you split the ship asunder.
It makes it go faster as far as I can tell. Air intakes and such.
You should watch bulgerian treasure planet! It's so much worse/better than the disney one!
you should really watch the movie

I especially love the engine bits you printed out and put lights under, it’s inspired a large part of my steampunk air ship I’m drawing
Aw man, I love Treasure Planet, what a blast from the past!
Nice job, I've always thought Treasure Planet was under rated. The Airfix Golden Hind dates to the mid 60's which explains the flash and warping.
Now I want to go buy a ship model kit. Looks beautiful.

Yeah, I was conflicted on how to set them up, haha.
I would love nothing more than a series of steampunk-afied model ships. Maybe a diorama of a fleet battle?
Another hidden gem that would go GREAT with this build: Atlantis.

Just rewatched the movie because of this! I like this and TITAN AE back in the day
Hell yeah!
Awesome custom. Treasure Planet is one of my favorite Disney movies and this looks so much like The RLS Legacy it's awesome.

I adore treasure planet. Love the finished result. The rigging would have been way too fiddly for me. Good job.
Yep, adding "make a ship, airship, spaceship and space pirate ship" to my list. This is magnificent!
7:00 Very nice! I like!

Yes. I even have some tucked away somewhere. Gotta remember that next time!
Omg love this movie so much! Seen it like a thousand times since I was younger, also love the finished result.💕
Possibly the best animated Disney film out here. Great job on the ship.
I love kit bashing. Great modeling, thanks for sharing. You might want to invest in an oscillating cutter, it would have made cutting the boat into pieces much easier.
Oh, thanks, I'll look into one. Can never have too many tools.
Awesome build, I loved treasure planet as a kid. I'm always so impressed by you're array of knowledge and platforms you use for your builds

Great Conversion, and you make it seem like even I could try to build one without losing both Hands by Accident. Thank you!
You really could! It's a fun project.
That's awesome! I kinda wanna try making one of my own now...
Thanks John, one of the most enjoyable things I've built. I can see how some hobbyists go deep on model ship building.
The cap bits that you designed are cool and the LEDs look great!
Ooooo... I love the paint job on the crew members. Nice.
Excellent build!
Thanks TNu! Loved your recent circus build too!

Treasure planet is one of my favorite movies!! You did a great job on the ship!
pissah build, it's always been my favorite childhood movie
Treasure planet is such a good movie😄
You have an amazing imagination...very COOL‼‼ Luv the Movie too..they sure don't make them like the used to‼
Treasure Planet and pirate ships my two favorite things! Needs sails for the solar winds! Fantastic build!!!
As a treasure planet fan, this was incredibly fun to see!
This turned out great! What a fun project 😄
The Golden Hind will fit in fine in Treasure Planet. Probably as an example of early Terran Spacefaring when they're just beginning to start in the interstellar community.
WOW! You keep outdoing yourself, Knarb. Very impressive.
Great ship to go on adventures 💜

Thanks for tuning in Nick. Look forward to seeing you make more crazy things too!
Awesome! Very inspiring piece. Great work!
coolest build ive seen yet, brought back old memories from childhood, love it!
What a fantastic build, haven't see treasure planned in hot minute, definitely did the Genre justice with this wonderful ship
*The sea is always right*
Always gotta watch your back in space though.
Super cool. Love the movie. Titan A.E. was a good one that had a similar vibe. Came out around the same time I think.
oooh you're right, forgot about that one!
Nicely done. Great conversion. And yes, that rigging looks correct
Knarb, you’re a mad GENIUS with no fear! So much respect. What a cool and interesting project and video to watch! Thanks for making it.

Treasure Planet is a Nostalgic trip.
amazing. my sister would love this
You got my like after 30 seconds,Treasure Planet is one of my favourite Disney's films ever. just one small note, those flags are actualy upwind

Phenomenal build!!!
My favorite disney movie!
I wanna re-watch treasure planet now, that movie always has a special spot in my heart and it's what got me into space and piracy.
I absolutely loved it. Space pirates. But my eye kept looking at the direction of those flags.
Love the nautical builds. Keep them coming.
Best childhood ship ever

Holy ship. That s awesome!
Treasure planet is probably the best example of "Science Fantasy" ever. Period.
It's a Vintage Classic most of these kits use the old molds for a better introduction to Airfix get your years latest Spitfire
This is awesome, I work with legos instead of models and I’m cooking up something similar, definitely saving for reference.
That turned out really great. I saw that movie, but remember nothing about it.
Very nice. Love it. The movie is great. Must see
Incredible job on this kit! I really like the movie and seeing you bring its unique aesthetic to life was wonderful to watch.
Finally, another treasure planet fan!
100% Professional!
