Ever since Lexus has gotten a version of a Toyota vehicle, the company feels obligated to give the more advanced systems to the Lexus and require the customer to pay a lot more. The previous gen Lexus GX470, 4th gen 4Runner V8 full time 4WD, and 4th gen 4Runner V6 with 4WD selector to 4H pretty much function the same with an improved ATRAC over the 100 series LC/LX. The manual FJ Cruiser 4WD is also full time 4WD and all FJ Cruiser 4WD's ATRAC is an improved version of the one on the 4th gen 4Runner/GX470. The Limited trim 5th gen 4Runner get the full time 4WD with torsen center differential like the GX460, except the GX460 can be optioned with MTS and crawl control. 5th gen 4Runner Limited doesn't get the off-road goodies available in the GX460 thus forcing buyer to get the 4Runner TRD Offroad/TRD Pro. ATRAC is a newer iteration on the 5th gen 4Runner and GX460 over the 120 series platform. North American LC 200/LX570 all came with torsen center differential whereas previous 100 series LC had an open center differential similar to a 90 series LC Prado/3rd gen 4Runner. The torsen center differential allow 60% power to rear and 40% power to front normally. If slip is detected, % power shifts away from the normal 60% rear/40% front ratio. Better to get the 5th Gen 4Runner while you can. Made in Japan, proven reliability, significantly less maintenance required. Going into the upcoming zombie apocalypse, it’s the easy choice.
How does a locker send equal power? If you have poor traction on one wheel you cannot send more torque to it than the traction can hold. . Locker bias torque and have equal RPM. Since power is torque * RPM that means they bias power. . Open diffs leverage the opposite wheel thus no wheel can receive more torque. ie equal torque or lift a wheel and neither get any torque. But RPM isn’t constant so they don’t have equal power as well.

4runner all day, true offroaders could care less about having the latest tech garbage.
Ryan - please add few seconds silence at the beginning.. you are talking right away from start.
The 4Runner works for me.
It’s a proven power train and off road prowess.
That 5 speed has got to go
And the LX and Tundra aren't proven? Lol they're on the Land Cruiser platform. If anything their credibility is higher than the 4Runner.
@@crusherman96 took a new tundra with the 3.4L turbos no hybrid out for a test drive. The turbo lag is extreme. I own a 5.7. I like it better
@@crusherman96 Turbo’s won’t last as long as a naturally aspirated engine. And I refuse to pay the kind of money for an LX only bc at the end of the day it’s still a Toyota.
Don’t get me wrong, my mother is on her 2nd Lexus and at 81 years old she deserves it
@@davedavid0 I agree with that. When Toyota changes the 4Runner, I’m sure they’ll redo the entire vehicle
Which one has the best mpg?
The one that’s parked.
im looking to buy an old GX 470 and fix it up.
The next 4Runner/Tacoma might have a 2.7 or 3l turbo engine with hybrid system coupled to it I guess!!!
Better to get the 5th Gen 4Runner while you can. Made in Japan, proven reliability, significantly less maintenance required. Going into the upcoming zombie apocalypse, it’s the easy choice.
I love my 2022. It’s a tank
It's coming....Z
How does a locker send equal power? If you have poor traction on one wheel you cannot send more torque to it than the traction can hold.
.
Locker bias torque and have equal RPM. Since power is torque * RPM that means they bias power.
.
Open diffs leverage the opposite wheel thus no wheel can receive more torque. ie equal torque or lift a wheel and neither get any torque. But RPM isn’t constant so they don’t have equal power as well.
Райан спасибо за видео Добра)
Пожалуйста мой дрюг 🤡
No KDSS on the 4Runner?
Not available on TRD PRO.
Will Toyota fix the Tacoma trans. for 2023?
🤷🏻♂️
Make avedio abaot ford f 150 raptor vs toyota tacoma
I think what you meant to say, but Toyota wouldn't let you say it, is the ancient 4Runner is still the most capable but you need to know how to use the modes.
The 4Runner has A-Trac. Would been interesting to see that used before the rear locker.
MTS is a fine-tuned version of ATRAC.
@@drivingsports It should still be used before the locker.
@@michaeldbhawker3556 Watch the video again. He used it and the 4runner couldn't make it up the rock climb. He had to lock the rear wheel.
4runners need to be updated.
Is that a Lumix with a fold out screen or an attached mini screen???
Very instructional as always. Can’t wait for the next gen 4Runner. An anticipated hybrid drive will be a game changer. Let’s hope they adopt a commensurate transmission.
Wish you guys had the Mighty Nissan Patrol!
Likewise
The camera quality in my 2022 4Runner is worst than that of my 2016 base model Civic LX.
That’s one of the reasons I love it so much. Basic. Capable. Reliable.
Sorry, which pixels is the boulder? lol
@@Moistnmeaty90 That's the main reason I got one, but charging $800 for a system that is only useful in very few lighting conditions is an absolute joke.
There are times where I can't even see where the outline of the car is in the 360 view camera, I can't see what is going on next to the car. I wouldn't have minded paying $1200 or more if the system was actually useful.
They were better off charging $800 for a higher quality front camera and rear camera without the side view cameras, instead they decided to make all the cameras potato quality. This was about cost cutting, not reliability.
If only the next gen 4Runner gets hybrid powertrain from Tundra and KDSS suspension from LX..
You can get a current 4runner with KDSS in TRD off Road trim
LX600 doesn't have to beef up tires. it's too nice to drive in the dirt. it's like a princess wearing a dress by a man. It is the most executive SUBMarine dirt rider on earth.
No nee d locker use A-Track should work fine
ATRAC is awesome!
I’d have been in 4hi the whole time
I love Toyota!!
Toyota... Legendary.
"Four Wheel Drive All of the Time is really the Best"
Which begs the Question why Toyota Removed it from the New Sequoia
Since most folks drive more on dry (or wet) pavement rather than off road
Cost most likely.
@@drivingsports
The "Bean Counters" Win Again
@@jeffreysmith4304 Toyota's Chief Truck Engineer has stated in several interviews that there would have been no new Sequoia is drivetrains were not shared with the Tundra.
@@rightlanehog3151
Understood
But my own (Totally Useless) Opinion
is that Mom & Pop usual Large SUV buyer
will rarely take the Sequoia off road
But ALL of them will drive on Slippery road surfaces (Ice, snow, even rain) where Full time 4WD really can make a Difference
@@jeffreysmith4304 I wish the new Sequoia had retained the independent rear suspension, Torsen Center Differential, spacious third row and roll down rear window that made the last one so special. Time will tell if the compromises (and advancements) found in the new Sequoia will make it a success.
Too bad Toyota jumped on the undersized turbo engine band wagon. They lost any further sales from me for new Tundras...guess I'll be going with a Nissan Titan.
The life expectancy of the v6 duel turbo engine is going to be much less than the V8s
@@Rainy_Day12234 It certainly will be, and people don't get it...but most people today out buying new stuff don't keep stuff long enough to know or care.
Nissan is discontinuing the Titan for a reason.
@@iamthedutchbro LOL.
The LX needs better tires.
Its a street queen, so street tires are to be expected on them.
@@wildbill23c understood but it’s a true off-roader and can tackle all conditions with the proper tires.
Did you sell your 4runner?
Yeah he did. He is driving a Ford Ranger now as a test vehicle.
@@Feintgames damn what a shame
Old news.
lx the most capable but least utilized
4Runner will outlast the other two. Toyota is about to kill its reliability reputation when the 4Runner changes.
Thats why im waiting to even consider a new model 4runner for at least 3 years after it debuts.
The Lexus is really good, but it is so Fing ugly. Really wish Toyota would just bring a Toyota badged short wheelbase land cruiser back to the states preferably a two row unit.
He said no Sequoia. Yet there is a Sequoia @9:06
We did not have the Sequoia on the same day of this exact test. We had the Sequoia the next day, which was our day to film the review and the off-road test separate from this one. Toyota did not make one available for us to use in this specific video.
i prefer full time 4wd
If there is no Jeep or land rover does this even count? Jeeps are so good off-road that the on road experience is sacrificed. Land Rover almost rivals Jeep off road but may not be reliable enough to make it to the dirt lol. But both off road way better than Toyotas, not that Toyotas are bad by any other measure.
The trd off road would have been more comparable with kdss this didnt truly showcase any difference in 4wd the pro struggled because it didnt have kdss and the flex necessary to keep the tires on the ground the pro is for high speed mogul sand running off road is for rocks and slow mo stuff
The TRD Pro is not the best 4R for true off road for the reason you pointed out. For less money than the Pro you can upgrade the off-road and have a far superior machine for everything
4Runner is a better vehicle and will last 5x longer. No brainer…
Gotta get an FJ cruiser in the mix!
It is sad that you literally reach for MTS immediately in every one of your 4Runner review videos...
Because in every video we try to test all the features. And, yes, it's a feature.
Comparing 3 Toyotas?
Nice commercial.
He did say It’s a Toyota event on a Toyota made path
this is the best hard core 4 runner built out of japan. its tough as a nail and will last you 20 years.
All really nice vehicles but no one is going to spend $60-80k and risk scratching up the vehicles off road. Lol. Better off buying a few years older pre-owned to use off road.
