  • Built at the now defunct Wixom Assembly Plant, the Lincoln LS was developed out of necessity due to competitive luxury car manufacturers introducing sporty cars to their lineups. Mercedes-Benz had their AMG line, BMW with their M cars and Jaguar with the R-Line cars. Cadillac was the first with the Opel Omega-derived Cadillac Catera, the Caddy that Zigs...Sigh...that ultimately would become the CTS.
Lincoln, with cars like the wallowy Town Car, Taurus-based Continental, the personal luxury Mark VIII and the Expedition-Based Navigator and Explorer-Based Aviator, hardly had anything to compete properly.
Using the DEW98 platform shared with the Jaguar X-Type and the heritage styled Ford Thunderbird, the rear-wheel drive configuration was the best starting point. With the AJ V8, a sporty SelectShift automatic and smartly styled interior and exterior whispered "I'm a Lincoln", yet the car yelled "I want to be a BMW!!"
The LS was short-lived, however, only lasting 6 model years before being replaced with the front-wheel drive Ford Fusion variant Zephyr and MKZ car. Sales weren't quite on par with what Lincoln wanted, with the highest sales numbers in 2000 and 2006 being the lowest, with less than 9,000 units sold.
Lincoln has since stayed out of the sport sedan market, and has gone back to their roots as a traditional American land yacht highway cruiser brand with offerings such as the Continental, Corsair, Nautilus, Aviator and Navigator.

Great review with nice camera work. I have the 2004 LS V8 sport version. It was semi-rough when I bought it, but I'm enjoying restoring it.

Thanks for this very helpful video. I just bought one of these vehicles and wanted to show a relative what it looks like on the interior and exterior. This is the best tour video of this car that I have seen, so I shared it to her.

I wish they would’ve made a special edition with a cobra V8 and a manual transmission. That would’ve been a world beater.

The cooling system in these cars are notoriously junk. All plastic thermostat housing and pipes. Prone to cracking. That being said I love these cars.

@@HOTPLATEGAMING thats funny. Jaguar was owned by ford at the time. And Jaguar has never been known for their reliability. Actually reliability went way up after Ford bought them. Unfortunately Ford sold them to Tata Motors and quality is starting to drop again.

..... agreed.... definitely the prettiest, with the chrome accents on the bumpers emphasizing the grill and rear license plate surround ...... and the stock 17 inch mag wheels are the best ....Downsides? The cooling system radiator fan is hydraulic powered, and the fan pump is $300 and getting harder to get. Worse still is the pump which powers this fan pump. Unavailable, or rather only available used, and you will say many bad words replacing it. Took me 6 hours, and I've wrenched for 50 years. Not counting the 2 hours at the junkyard to get the used one off. And then the alternator. Special order. Another $300 from Napa. Had a new Chinese unit last 2 hours. If you get a spare from the wrecking yard, highly recommended, always keep it handy, as in the trunk. Mine quit in Raton, New Mexico and there were none new or rebuilt in the state. Yikes. What else -- the Alpine CD player is pure junk, tried 4 replacements and they are all bad, the glare from the rear window obliterates the info band in the dash, the seat adjusts so that there is a 2 inch gap between back and bottom so whatever you put on the seat instantly disappears somewhere. PCV hoses are plastic and will obliterate themselves if not carefully removed, put new plastic tubes and coolant hoses on every other year just for insurance, use only MOOG front end parts (replace everything). And on and on. Oops, don't forget to replace the rubber universal joints. And. if you leave off the under bumper shroud, expect the alternator to wipe itself out -- the shroud confines and directs forced air from the radiator. This alternator is so overworked it has an internal front and rear fan. Really, too small for the job. Finally, the memory system for the steering wheel occasionally takes a nap. And the replacement clockspring for the steering column, another $200, is garbage, and you need to reinforce the hooks with ultra black silicone or else it comes loose the first time you use the turn signal. And how about those 4 info buttons below the center vent falling out. More silicone here also. Special bleeding procedure for the cooling system and heater also. I like the car, mainly I like how strong the body is. With new headlights, $100 each, car is a beauty.

I’m trying to figure out the same thing. From what I can tell, it completely depends on how it was maintained. They tend to have coil issues and a lot of the ones on the market are V8s.
I buy cars like this for a few thousand and play with them for a while. I don’t beat on them, but I like to keep them for a couple of years and sell them for usually about what I get them for. There’s a 2005 not too far from me that has 140k, but the owner isn’t interested in selling. I haven’t seen him have any trouble with it in the last 3 years and he drives a lot.

    • @TheRockstarLegend

I have a 2002 with 140k miles on it and it runs as smooth as butter. BUT the transmission failed on me multiple times causing my motor to fail. As long as you do your research on the car before you take a trip these cars are a wonder work. One of a kind that’s for sure.

I own a gen 1 W/180K on it and still love driving it.. Ive had the standard coolant and coil issues and learned a couple things. First dont buy cheap eBay coils, they are a waste of money, second is to join at least 1 Lincoln ls forum, the guys on the lincoln vs Cadillac forums and super knowledgeable and helpful, third is to buy O.E parts whenever possible and last is to set search alerts on the F.B marketplace and OfferUp for Lincoln ls and you can find super good deals.. I absolutely love my old LS

      i have a 2005 ultimate, with 136k.
i have no problems no weird noises or anything. i do have to change coils around every 50k, if you run them with 87 gas youl need to change them out even sooner but that costs like 80 bucks
