The sunlight pushing its way through the trees gives it a eerie almost surreal look.
This is what separates the good from the amazing. Attention to detail, putting in effort and taking the time and frames to create art.

Thanks for showing your thought process! I love seeing the final results, but I also enjoy seeing the thought process in action; focus stacking, planning for exposure blending (even if you might not use it), trying different apertures. I know I should do that too, but it helps me not be lazy when I see a pro putting it into practice.
I just love how these videos give out ideas on how to shoot what one could consider less than ideal conditions. I too thought that swirling water looked like it'd possibly make a good photos but after seeing both your frames totally agree neither one was great. I once shot something similar with swirling bubbles and foam but set my camera to interval mode and let it shoot many frames, eery single one was vastly different but I found one that truly captured movement and just worked wonderfully. I hope you do more videos on how to shoot on less than ideal days, they're really something you don't see many photographers doing but such a reality of life, can't tell you how many times I spent 2 or 3 days, even longer at somewhere and just got the worst weather for photography ever then other times have literally been driving somewhere and out of nowhere the best light I've ever seen.
Thanks for including the camera settings that you use to get the look that you want and for including the 'failures' or difficult parts of composing and creating a photo. I photograph in the same environment that you were in and appreciate that you struggle with the same issues I do.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video! My favourite part was for the shot of the swirling water where you were adjusting your shutter speed. My favourite shot was the last one with the water going over the natural river riffle.

Nice Video and some great scenery. I did a similar Fall hike today in Missouri. Great Fall colors and temperatures and I found some good compositions. Just a great day to be outside enjoying nature. Your bracketed photo of that backlit moss is a winner.

Love the backlit moss photo. I’ll have to go hunt for some on the next stupid sunny weekend. The falls look like the sweet creek area which is always fun to explore. Spent all day there on Oct 12th this year and the storm from the week before took all the leaves from the big leaf maples down early.

Like you, "streaming backlight" always catches my eye. Sometimes I try too hard (if that's possible) to wring-out a composition in that type of light, when there may, in fact, be no composition to be had. When you show the compositions that don't work, that serves to validate my process of "fail-to-succeed." You work the scene until it works, and that's a great way to win.
I also like that you are engaging your comments more often (again).Not that your content isn't outstanding, but because you have gone back to a good amount of comment response, I have re-subscribed.

I will, after a time, unsubscribe to channels where the creator ceases to engage in comments.
Since I began my channel, even with a very few subscribers (so far) I realize it's not always easy to engage, but I try to follow a "dance with the one what brung me" (my subscribers are who brung me) philosophy and respond to every comment. Even a "heart" is good when I get busy with life happening.
So, it's a personal ethic, subscribe to those who engage with comments, unsubscribe to those who are too busy.

Mike Mitchell Well I can kind of see where you’re coming from with that, it is a very difficult thing to keep up with at times. There are times where I will release a video right at the beginning of a workshop and when those workshops are going on I don’t have time for anything else. There are other times when the negative troll comments get to me to the point where I don’t even look at the comments because I’m afraid of the negativity that is sometimes within them. I’d like to think that the value is in the video content more so than my replies in the comment section. Sometimes the comments sections or a scary place
@@NickPage "Scary Place," Aye! I am subject to sometimes losing my cool when I choose to respond to negative stuff, so I try to avoid same. This Vlogging thing can make us vulnerable to exposure to the negative remarks, but I'm trying to learn to be teflon-coated in my reactions to them.

So awesome to hear another photographers thoughts on working through compositions. Even when shooting with other photographers rarely do we share that many thoughts on the compositions - usually too busy trying to get them. Hey, how did you keep you feet dry in that stream???

Hi Nick. This is one of my favorite videos. Your thoughts behind the images you are taking and why they are needed and how they will be used in the final edit. Not sure how many times I was out taking photos and get back to edit them and kick myself for not getting a faster exposure or a focus stack. I really like your thought process in the field.
Waiting for our rainy to season to pick up so that I can go do some of this in the forests along the escarpment here in South Africa.
Currently it is hot and dry, with a lot having been destroyed by fire.
I see it's not going well in LA there either.

I carry a yoga mat I can use for laying down like that. Weighs next to nothing, rolls up and straps onto bottom of my backpack and works great for keeping the creepy crawlys off you.
I have a butt pad that I almost brought but didn’t this time around... Would’ve been nice for the elbows and knees

I struggle with stacking and taking numerous shots and blending them with different exposures. How do you remember which shot goes with what if you take numerous shots trying to get what you want? Beautiful shots and your editing skills are 2nd to none!

Typically with Moving water like this any faster than 1/5 of a second and it starts to feel a bit too choppy.. But it always comes down to personal taste
Nice photos Nick. I currently live in Qatar, sunny 360 days a year. Wish I had a forest to wander thru. About how many times do you get out and shoot per week/ month.

Nick great video. How do you handle vinetting on you Sony at 16mm. On my a7r3 if I put anything more than a polarizer even at 87mm I get the problem.

my chin is 100% Spanish moss
That first shot, the mossy one, is stunning. When you were first by the river, you said the composition wasn't working for you. Do you determine that just by looking, or do you take a few trial shots?

Hi Nick, beautiful images as usual....I had a question about filters...I see you & Adam using magnetic filters...is is possible to stack these filters...e.g let's say I want to shoot a really long exposure by stacking the 10 & 6 stop filter ...Or I want to stack the circular polariser & a 6 stop filter...can this be done? If yes, do I need to buy 2 magnetic holders?
This is an old prototype of breakthrough photography filters. These cannot be stacked unfortunately which is one of the reasons they’re still redesigning it.. I use it because it’s convenient to quickly swap filters, but there are certainly issues get the system
Oh ok...thanks for the reply...! I currently use filters from wine country camera...& even though it is amazing quality (probably the best)....the holder, & the filter rings are big & add some weight.. so, was looking for something more convenient ....
