- In part 2 of 2, the Nerd reviews the ColecoVision and plays the games that were made for this console, including Montezuma's Revenge, Cabbage Patch Kids: Adventures in the Park, Chuck Norris Superkicks, and War Room. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 45.
The console was released in August of 1982 and offered some of the best looking console versions of arcade games that had been seen at the time. One of which was a deal with Nintendo to have Donkey Kong as its "in box" title. The console has a library of over 145 games and by Christmas of 1982 had sold over 500,000 units.
With the video game crash in 1983, however, the sales in the industry dropped dramatically not being able to recover from the market crash. Even with sales in upwards of 2 million consoles in its lifespan, the Colecovision was officially discontinued in 1985.

Having bought one of these for $1 in 2005 or 2006 at a Flea Market, I accidentally knocked a kid in the head with the console as I was walking through the crowd. We're lucky, it could have been a lot worse.

"There would be lawsuits up the ass" I don't want to take the time to read all 7,300 comments and i am not sure if this has been pointed out so here it is: Atari did pursue legal action against them for this add on and for the Atari 2600 clone Coleco made... the problem is that anyone with a little electronics knowledge and woodworking skill could make an Atari clone at home using stock electronics parts. Since nothing in the electronics was actually proprietary the judge threw out the cases.

Absolutely wild that Coleco would just straight up release an expansion to their console that just plays their competitor’s games, it’s one of those batshit nonsense moments that makes the early days of gaming so fascinating to research
I totally see how that's outlandish for a console.. but in a sense, and with a stretch, it's sort of similar to Microsoft having its own game studio but also letting competing studios' games run on Windows.

Having owned a Colecovision I can attest that yes, those A/C adapters in particular are the largest I've ever seen for a home console. - Someone who used to collect video games

If you hate them then just bypass them. I heard AC helped prolong your game systems anyway unlike that outdated DC electricity. AC is a smooth sine wave unlike DC which is a rough square wave and thus harder on the components in your consoles.

After playing nothing but Atari games, Montezuma's Revenge had so much atmosphere and depth it was mind-blowing. At least to my pre-kindergarten mind it was. I was only four at the time and loved it so much that my memory of the game to this day is of a game with better graphics than NES Mario.
too bad the games physics were a bit crappy, especially compared to Mario, but its still a good game.
It was also released on the Atari 2600.

There actually was a lawsuit over Coleco's expansion module! Atari took them to court and Coleco countersued for $500M (this was the 80s btw, $500M could probably buy you half of Africa). The result of the suits was that Coleco ended up paying royalties to Atari over the expansion module. Probably the strangest outcome of all of this was that Atari and Coleco actually agreed to RELEASE CERTAIN GAMES ONLY FOR THE OTHER COMPANY'S SYSTEM! That's the mindfuck for me. Could you imagine Sony and Microsoft developing games for each other, let alone developing a game that would only play on the competitor's system? Fucking lol. To add insult to injury, Atari made pretty great games for Coleco but Coleco basically released dogshit for the Atari. Coleco was really a company run by complete dickheads.
Also it's interesting that the distributor for Colecovisions was CBS, as in the news network.

+ShakeFan14 It's actually not that stupid if you're aware of what it is. The Colecovision doesn't have the power supply inside of it (probably to keep the system lighter, and perhaps reduce the amount of internal faults), so they kept it inside of the AC adapter. I kinda wish that they took the Xbox 360 approach though by separating all three components (the system, the power cable, and the power supply) to make it easier to use and less of a hog.

One of my favorite episodes. My son got me onto this show 15 years ago. I still love it. I had a coleco and it was great.

I recently visited a store which had a ColecoVision controller, and Nerd... you were right about the joystick; it was way too stiff.
The ColecoVision controllers I got in 2005 - 2007 were *still* the same. Maybe I even used a Genesis Controller once. I wonder if the retro community made a better replacement for sale by now? They did for Atari 5200.

It was the Fuckin controllers ... so uncomfortable. I had an Atari 2600 ...eventually then 5200 ...then 7800. But my friend down the street had a Colecovision and when I tried playing it I couldn’t hold the stupid thing. So used to the simple joystick 🕹.
I remember their Donkey Kong and Popeye were very good versions...just like the arcade.

The ColecoVision was a fucking amazing console for it's time. I think it was the best system ever made when you compare it to it's competition. It was the shit. Just compare the arcade versions to the ColecoVision versions to the 2600 versions. ColecoVision was Amazing.

Looping:
To advance you have to perform a 'looping' (roll credits) , fly on your back and shoot the blue and red rocket at the beginning of the level to open the door. This is still a better game than FF7 (I couldn't perform a looping in this one) or any Castlevania (i couldn't find rockets in those ones). 'Rockets and Loopings' on PS4 would be nice. The sequel would be great too: 'Rockets and Humans, which one will die in irony?'
