While Mighty no. 9's played on a stereotype that could be insulting to anime fans, an anime fan could still get a grin out of it if they weren't too sensitive it. Even "John Romero's gonna make you his bitch" had an edgy attitude to it. "It's got more games than you've got brain cells" just comes off as a lame playground insult.
Yeah, but at least Mighty No. 9’s jab was all in good fun. Maybe people in that generation would have taken it differently, but Tigers shot just came off as nasty
@@SoloSlater It may look better but its nearly unplayable. I had a copy and the GBA version would lag and freeze like you were playing SOCOM 2 or another FPS with a bad connection. You would get killed by obstacles and spikes all the time if you didnt turn off music and sound to play in silence. Thats the only way the game would run right
I got an r-zone for christmas and brought it to school for a while. The kids were impressed for the first few days until they realized how trash it was. It ended up at the bottom of my toy box, lost to the ages.
I had a friend that got an R-Zone for Christmas the year it came out. God that thing was a ripoff, I think we both played it once and never touched it again. He had the Batman game.

No, it was designed to do exactly one thing. Wring the last bit of value out of the licenses they held. Tiger handhelds were nearly dead for anything other than kids licensed stuff (Disney, Barbie, etc). Tiger still held the licenses to a bunch of popular game series so they designed this as a final cash in before that market completely died. This was not designed as a game console, this was designed as a means to cash in on licensing deals.

I had both the headband and the XPG versions. I can't remember why I wanted it... I quickly realized it looked cool with red and could be played in the dark... But they were still just garbage Tiger calculator games.

The gamecom ad also reminded me of when one of Battlefield 5's developers decided to respond to backlash the game was getting with the phrase if you don't like it don't buy it and guess what no one bought it
“Quiz Wiz” was the Game Com version of the original handheld game that it was made by Coleco back in 1978 (the year I was born). It was a pretty fun game filled thousands of trivia questions, just like being in a game show. And that when game shows became more popular back in the 1960’s through the 1980’s. By the 1990’s, Tiger acquired the name and re-released “Quiz Wiz” during that time.
More important than the gameboy being old tech was the fact the Nintendo worked hard to design games within the limitations of the system. Nintendo knew the screen was crap and would ghost a lot. So they designed their games carefully to minimize the problem as much as possible. And what worked, and what didn't, tended to trick out to other developers.
I owned one of these when I was younger. I ended up selling it to my friend for $30. He played it for, at most, 15 minutes and instantly hated it. He tried to trade it into a local game shop and they wouldn't take it. So he walked around the mall for two hours talking to EVERY kid he could see asking if they wanted to buy it. He eventually sold it for $3 to a kid and his mom. 🤣
Fun Fact : A port of *Metal Gear Solid* was planned for the Gamecom. Screenshots exists along with info from promo magazines, it was planned to be a Isometric game and was the first handheld title in the series, but was cancelled for unknown reasons. We can be glad about that though. RE2 GC was planned for an Claire scenario also but that was cancelled.

I love this series, it shows a weird part of gaming history that you don't really see anywhere else. That ontop of the great quality and care that clearly goes into these just keep me waiting for the next one! Keep up the great work on these.

That commercial is brimming with the ironic satire and self deprecation you'd expect to hear on a radio spot in a GTA game. Yet it's real and actually made to sell something in the real world. Utterly confounding marketing decision.
Considering the advertisement shown had the Sonic gameplay on fast-forward, where you could actually see the missing frames, I wonder why there wasn't ever a lawsuit against them for false advertising. It wasn't any sort of cutscene, it was literally lying with the gameplay footage itself. That sounds like false advertising, with the intent to deceive regarding the quality of the product, to me.
I love how all the advertising for this was geared towards edgy teenagers; and yet the devs at Tiger were so completely illiterate in demographics that the only games they made for it were basic puzzle, trivia, and other family entertainment which young people aren't particularly interested in.
i actually dont remember hearing about this when it was out. i only knew of the Tiger electronic hand held games. the ones that use the technology of a calculator. i still have both of mine.
@@zombietrash416 Even calculators work better as game consoles. There's a working port of Super Mario Bros. 3 for one Texas Instruments model and it's actually pretty dope.
The N64 port of RE2 is amazing work to compress that much data in way less space, while only barely downgrading graphics and sounds, putting voice in a console who didin't have a voice-chip, and FIXED bugs, and even gave full 360 stick control instead of tank. those people who made the port are geniuses.

I miss internet in the 90's simply because it was so freakin' easy to extend your "free trial". Just before a billing cycle I'd call AOL and ask to cancel and when they'd ask (they always did) why I was cancelling I'd simply say I couldn't afford it. Every time they would give me a three month extension. I had free internet for nearly a decade before AOL was just outright obsolete.

I think the reason why the system had 2 cartridge slots is for those who didn’t have pockets for some random reason and could only bring one game with them so having 2 was “SUPER COOL”
Yeah this thing was absolute trash but some of Shane’s criticisms make no sense. He implied the double slots was useless because it can’t play two games at once?? What does that even mean how does one play two games on one screen? Almost def for storage and that’s a great idea. And he was criticizing the lack of backlit screen, knowing full well people will bring up the gameboy wasn’t backlit either but that’s a decade older so tiger has no excuse. Which would make sense except gameboy didn’t add backlit screens until the GB Advance SP which is years after this console came out.
Seems to me the advantage is that when one of the slot's pins becomes worn or bent (Like with a Game Boy or a Nintendo DS.) you have an extra slot that still works.

I have fond memories of the casino games in New Super Mario Bros. They used fake money, but it was fun because Nintendo Polish and charm. Plus, Luigi was the dealer, instead of a random T-Rex
Plus most of those-at least the ones people seemed to play, myself included-were card games, like the notorious Picture Poker. Card games are inherently fun even with no money on the line imo.
a few days ago, while visiting a "goodwill" store, which sells only donated stuff, i saw a Tiger game that appeared to have a tiny light gun. IT WAS STILL IN IT'S ORIGINAL PACKAGING. which means someone either bought it or received it as a gift, and donated it WITHOUT EVER OPENING IT. Goodwill wanted $10 for it. i passed it up, and bought a copy of "empire earth 3" for $3.

No point typing this when nobody's going to read it, but gonna put it out there anyway. The second cartridge port was for the internet connectivity, which required a cartridge ala the DS Lite.
It still was not necessary because there were no games that you could play online so what’s the point of having a game and the internet cartridge inserted at the same time?
5:15 Just like many other things, Japan had a version of the Game Boy called the Game Boy Light that had a backlit screen. Sadly it was Japan exclusive, would have been quite nice to have that version over here in the west.
Sonic 06 (or "Sonic Oh-NO!", if you prefer) is by far the least pleasant Xbox game I've ever played because of what it has in common with ET's infamous Atari 2600 game (the worst "real" video game ever).
If, in the mid 90s, there was a Game Boy that could holster two cartridges at once, I would have bought it. Being able to switch between two games would have been fantastic, instead of carrying around an entire carrying case or keeping a game in my pocket.
@@oz_jones Just take a bit of tape and stick a second cartridge to the back of your gameboy?... Due to the way the cartridges work, you'd have to reset the gameboy anyway to switch so no loading/saving game-states anyway. This way you have all the (one) benefit of having 2 cartridges while also having a gameboy that takes up slightly less space compared to a gameboy with two internal slots... And best of all? If you want to go insane with it you could just tape a third or, god forbid, fourth cartridge to it. Hence why this was never made into a real product by Nintendo.
@@someguy4915 bruh, you clearly never lived through the 90s where you spent your days in a pre smart phone era to stay entertained in waiting rooms of doctor offices, long car rides, or during recess. The constant wear and tear that would go through of shoving the Gameboy on a moments notice into your pocket would never withstand slapping tape on a cartridge. Worse yet, if the cartridge broke or became lost from falling off, good luck convincing your mom or dad to replace it because you can't just re-download it

Oh man, I remember as a kid back in '97 seeing the commercials on TV and wanting this thing! I was blown away with the idea of being able to play Sonic, Duke Nukem 3D, and Resident Evil 2 on-the-go, so naturally I added it to my wishlist for "Santa". That Christmas I instead got a GameBoy Pocket. I was a little disappointed, but when Pokemon came out the following year I had some of the best times of my childhood playing & trading those damn pocket monsters xD Glad to hear that I really did dodge a bullet lol.
I only got the Gamecom for its internet capabilities. I doubted buying it because of the ads, but it had Sonic and you could play as KNUCKLES (who I found hot.)

Tiger was planning on splitting Resident Evil 2 into two different cartridges. One for Leon, one for Claire. Because of the system's failure, Claire's cartridge was cancelled.
The irony is that among their own games they had one called The Legend Of The Lost Creator which is the RPG from which the dragon at the top right coner at 2:20 comes from. It was the perfect game for a touch screen but they never released it.

Fun Fact : A port of *Metal Gear Solid* was planned for the Gamecom. Screenshots exists along with info from promo magazines, it was planned to be a Isometric game and was the first handheld title in the series, but was cancelled for unknown reasons. We can be glad about that though.
RE2 GC was planned for an Claire scenario also but that was cancelled.
I wanted both because a. sexy bitcrushed David Hayter and b. a game on the system with a female protagonist. Batgirl wasn't in Batman and Robin, so...

That commercial is brimming with the ironic satire and self deprecation you'd expect to hear on a radio spot in a GTA game. Yet it's real and actually made to sell something in the real world. Utterly confounding marketing decision.
Considering the advertisement shown had the Sonic gameplay on fast-forward, where you could actually see the missing frames, I wonder why there wasn't ever a lawsuit against them for false advertising. It wasn't any sort of cutscene, it was literally lying with the gameplay footage itself. That sounds like false advertising, with the intent to deceive regarding the quality of the product, to me.

i actually dont remember hearing about this when it was out. i only knew of the Tiger electronic hand held games. the ones that use the technology of a calculator. i still have both of mine.
@@zombietrash416 Even calculators work better as game consoles. There's a working port of Super Mario Bros. 3 for one Texas Instruments model and it's actually pretty dope.
The N64 port of RE2 is amazing work to compress that much data in way less space, while only barely downgrading graphics and sounds, putting voice in a console who didin't have a voice-chip, and FIXED bugs, and even gave full 360 stick control instead of tank.

I miss internet in the 90's simply because it was so freakin' easy to extend your "free trial". Just before a billing cycle I'd call AOL and ask to cancel and when they'd ask (they always did) why I was cancelling I'd simply say I couldn't afford it. Every time they would give me a three month extension. I had free internet for nearly a decade before AOL was just outright obsolete.
And to think that just four and a bit years later, we had the PSP.

I think the reason why the system had 2 cartridge slots is for those who didn’t have pockets for some random reason and could only bring one game with them so having 2 was “SUPER COOL”
Yeah this thing was absolute trash but some of Shane’s criticisms make no sense. He implied the double slots was useless because it can’t play two games at once?? What does that even mean how does one play two games on one screen? Almost def for storage and that’s a great idea. And he was criticizing the lack of backlit screen, knowing full well people will bring up the gameboy wasn’t backlit either but that’s a decade older so tiger has no excuse. Which would make sense except gameboy didn’t add backlit screens until the GB Advance SP which is years after this console came out.

Seems to me the advantage is that when one of the slot's pins becomes worn or bent (Like with a Game Boy or a Nintendo DS.) you have an extra slot that still works.

Goodwill wanted $10 for it. i passed it up, and bought a copy of "empire earth 3" for $3.
You didn’t have to explain what a goodwill is. Literally everyone knows that goodwill only sells donated items. Also, you’re stupid for not buying that sealed game. Many people collect sealed games from any console and will pay big money for them.

No point typing this when nobody's going to read it, but gonna put it out there anyway. The second cartridge port was for the internet connectivity, which required a cartridge ala the DS Lite.
It still was not necessary because there were no games that you could play online so what’s the point of having a game and the internet cartridge inserted at the same time?
But why would you need to insert a game and the Internet cartridge at the same time?
I also think it could be used if you were in a car, and wanted to bring two games without switching games.

If, in the mid 90s, there was a Game Boy that could holster two cartridges at once, I would have bought it. Being able to switch between two games would have been fantastic, instead of carrying around an entire carrying case or keeping a game in my pocket.
Yeah, I too felt that the jab at the two ports was dumb.
@@oz_jones Just take a bit of tape and stick a second cartridge to the back of your gameboy?... Due to the way the cartridges work, you'd have to reset the gameboy anyway to switch so no loading/saving game-states anyway.
This way you have all the (one) benefit of having 2 cartridges while also having a gameboy that takes up slightly less space compared to a gameboy with two internal slots...
And best of all? If you want to go insane with it you could just tape a third or, god forbid, fourth cartridge to it.
Hence why this was never made into a real product by Nintendo.

Worse yet, if the cartridge broke or became lost from falling off, good luck convincing your mom or dad to replace it because you can't just re-download it

Oh man, I remember as a kid back in '97 seeing the commercials on TV and wanting this thing! I was blown away with the idea of being able to play Sonic, Duke Nukem 3D, and Resident Evil 2 on-the-go, so naturally I added it to my wishlist for "Santa". That Christmas I instead got a GameBoy Pocket. I was a little disappointed, but when Pokemon came out the following year I had some of the best times of my childhood playing & trading those damn pocket monsters xD Glad to hear that I really did dodge a bullet lol.
I only got the Gamecom for its internet capabilities. I doubted buying it because of the ads, but it had Sonic and you could play as KNUCKLES (who I found hot.)
To be fair though, Nintendo had the slogan "Touching is good" with their DS back in 2004/2005.

Tiger was planning on splitting Resident Evil 2 into two different cartridges. One for Leon, one for Claire. Because of the system's failure, Claire's cartridge was cancelled.
