    Ouya LIED to me as well, and stiffed me for thousands of dollars. They hired my company to photograph images that were to be used "specifically" only for Press and Social Media. We had a contract stating so, and they wanted an extremely discounted rate as these photos were NEVER supposed to be used for advertising or anything other than Press. Low and Behold, a year later I'm walking though a Target store and see an Ouya console on the shelf. I pick it up to see MY PHOTOS being used on the product packaging itself, and the advertising. SMH. Anyhow, my agent sent them the bill for the additional usage, and they refused to pay and ignored the request. We threatened a lawsuit. Julie's lawyers claimed that she had sold everything off to Razer to pay their already enormous debt, and they had no money left. When they were made aware they could be liable for up to $150,000 in copyright infringement fees...they agreed to pay half...and...we decided to take the loss as a tax write off instead. Moral of the story...beware of doing business with people who lie through their teeth.

      People genuinely believed traditional console gaming was dying, and the future would be always online games, mobile games, games with a toy component, and VR.
      Then the toy games turned out to be a fad, VR became irrelevant, and always online has had numerous high profile failures in recent times. Mobile gaming is still strong, but the big money is in a buisness model that is increasingly being regarded as gambling and facing government regulation.

      Actually, the Ouya is just a basic Android device in a square box that you can install regular Android apps on. Thus you can install Android games on it as well as install retro game system emulators to play NES, SNES, C64, Genesis/Megadrive, etc. games. So if you use it like a RaspberryPi with RetroPi software installed it you could use it as retro gaming device. It won’t play modern Android games very well, if at all due to its outdated hardware and old Android version but it’s not totally useless. That’s a lot better use then as a paperweight given how the light the unit is anyways. Also you can install media software on it to use it as a set top box for playing video and music.

      Of course it's not the best experience but if you care about getting the best experience why wouldn't you just save up a little more for a PS3 or X360?
      Consoles are still going strong because they do a good job existing alongside tablets. For example it's cheaper to buy a PS5 and a tablet than to get a laptop of equal power. The OUYA just isn't a big enough leap over mobile gaming to really justify it's existence especially since having a tablet is almost considered mandatory today.

If officially licensed, have Google Play store on it, and the hardware is optimized to interact with a keyboard, mouse and up to two or four Bluetooth game pads. There you go. Does such a thing exist? If not, why not? Maybe Google won't license such a stick officially, or maybe there's just not a strong enough market for such a stick. It would have to be cheap -- maybe $50 for the stick itself. Or maybe to make it really capable, powerful enough, it would have to have the specs of a top-of-the-line smartphone (like a high-end Samsung), and nobody wants to pay that much for a TV stick.

    • @Middcore
      @Middcore 2 года назад +3

      From all the retrospectives I have read/watched on this debacle, here's what I think the logic of the pitch and the fetishistic obsession with talking about "television" was supposed to be (to the extent there was any coherent logic at all):
      1. Gaming is more immersive on a TV compared to a tiny smartphone screen.
      2. Getting your game on a TV, meaning released on one of the "traditional" consoles, was out of the reach of small developers financially (debatable, as indie games on console definitely existed then, though not nearly to the extent they do today)
      3. The Ouya, as essentially a smartphone in a box, would be a platform for small-budget indie developers to let audiences experience their games in a more immersive way
      Now, obviously there are major arguments against this. The biggest one is that people play smartphone games at times and in circumstances different from those where they play "traditional" console or PC games on a big screen, and if low-budget indie games have to compete against AAA console and PC titles for the TV screen time, they're going to lose for a lot of people.
      Still, I think that the idea of simply "Let people play the smartphone games they like on a big screen" had some merit and could have been successful. Except that isn't what Ouya did. It wasn't like people could just hook the box up to their TV and start playing all of mobile games they already enjoyed on their iPhone or Android. Despite running Android, the Ouya couldn't even access the Play Store. So instead of being a cheap low-powered console with a huge library of cheap fun casual games, it was a cheap low-powered console with basically no games at all.

      @MrMarinus18 2 года назад +2

      @@Middcore But the thing is despite what people like to think what developers think is pretty irrelevant since you're not selling it to them.
      It matters what consumers think and why would they buy a smartphone in a box when they already had a smartphone they could take anywhere? Since everyone already has a smartphone anyway a console needs to provide something that a smartphone does not.
      Also if you want to game but have very little money around that time second hand Wii's were flooding the market and the release of the X-one and PS4 meant a lot of PS3 and X360 popped up as well. You could instead go for one of those. Though especially the Wii kind of could do everything the OUYA could do and more. It was also far more multiplayer friendly which is a big deal for people with little money. Since after all their friends also often have little money so having just 1 console they can share is very attractive.
      Also the Wii's library was massive and extremely well known. It was the safer option and if you have little money to spend you don't like taking risks. Since you can't afford to replace it.

    I liked the device itself. I bought one when they were on clearance and used it as an emulation console for a while. It was pretty good at it, and my wife even preferred the controller to the PS3 controllers we had (didn't understand it myself).
    I can't speak to the rest of the Ouya experience such as the store and the games, because I didn't even bother to try them.
    When I discovered Retropie, I sold the Ouya on ebay for exactly what I paid for it, and used the money to buy a Raspberry Pi 3.
    I actually found N64 had worked better on the Ouya than on the Pi 3, but the Retropie experience was much more pleasant that navigating the Ouya OS.
