The game being made so close to the contract expiring is why it never got many post-launch updates - the devs and publisher legally couldn't work on it anymore.
You forgot to mention that the board slam was mapped to the same button as the grind, so a lot of times you would try to do a grind to keep a combo going and you would boardslam instead to kill it.

I think the biggest thing this should teach future game programmers is try not to take on a project that your team just cannot handle. Robomodo basically seems like a fallguy in this situation who will likely be producing shovelware until dissolution instead of the bigger name they could've attained by growing naturally instead of jumping at the first big offer that came along. Note: This is not to say "don't dream big" but that if you just got out of college and activision offers you a deal, think about it before jumping on it.
"He mastered the art of riding a wooden plank with wheels nailed under it". That's pure gold. This is top quality writing. That's why I love this channel so much.
The funniest part is that he’s entirely right. Why name your store ShakeShack when you only have like 3 shakes and you’re more famous for your burgers.
@The Nerd Room The funny thing is, ShakeShack doesn't have good burgers OR shakes. It's all overpriced, overrated trash. By really, people don't have to take names so seriously, as Burger King doesn't have real royalty either.
The first level is "the berrics". It's a legendary skate location/company in which eric koston is involved. It is modeled after the real thing. Most skaters would kill to skate that place. It is done exactly the way it should be done. Probably just not a good decision to make it the first level. Should have been a bonus location for real skaters to experience after they're done with the main game.
The thing that sticks out most to me is how the game devs removed all the very pretty and interesting wall art of the actual location and replaced it with tacky advertisements
That Morphman callback in the beginning is just wonderful. You already got me laughing and pressing Like a minute into the video. That "Asteroid Belt" level though. How do you make a SPACE level boring? That's an achievement. The game scolding you for going out of bounds is just so in-your-face. No idea why anyone thought that was a good idea. I was never into skateboarding, but because I grew up in southern California, Tony Hawk was literally *THE* first celebrity I ever heard of, and my parents even bought me Tony Hawk merchandise when I was 4 and didn't know a THING about him or skateboarding (and yes, that was in 1999.) Interesting how the quality of the games tapered off as general interest in skateboarding decreased, but then as skateboarding got added to the Olympics in 2020, BOOM. Good game again.
Man I was just depressed when I saw this thumbnail. But on the plus side we got the really damn good THPS 1+2 remake a few years later, so at least this story has a happy(ish) ending.
I always very much appreciated the change 4 brought. The 2 minute time limit is cool when you know the stage and you have all the tools to make a cool run, but it is hell for beginners.
Like if you placed the time limit toggle in the settings, then you'd be able to cater to both beginners and experts. Experts who know the maps inside and out can use the time limit to it's advantage, but beginners can disable the time limit and freely explore the maps to know the best places to rack up combos.
The beginning mentioning how Tony Hawk is a legend! That’s under-selling it! When I heard he had built a skateboard park to honor the life & mourn the death of Tyre Nichols, it was such an amazing, sweet, generous thing he did. And that ain’t the start of it; Idk what all he’s done to be labeled a legendary, generous man, but I’m certain he’s done so much. It’s a shame some of the games, like this one, soil Hawk’s legacy.
23:30 IMO and in my experience talking to others, the series started going downhill from Project 8 onwards with the peak being either 4, THUG, or American Wasteland depending on who you ask. Most fans I've talked to seem to PREFER the lack of a timer since as you guys highlighted, the games reward exploration. You can't really explore a level much if after 2 minutes everything resets. That's just my take as someone who played the hell out off all of them though.
I’d say Project 8 felt like iT could have been the beginning of something special, but an annual release schedule killed the chances of anything bigger going forward.
I feel the same. THUG2 is probably my absolute favorite due to character creation and a story mode along with the ability to *get off your damn board and walk.*
For me THUG 2 was the last good one. But I completely get the points made in the video. That while THUG 1 and 2 were fun games, they certainly strayed a long way from the classic formula and were essentially a different series of games that used the same core mechanic. THPS 3 was the peak imo.
THAW was my favorite and I loved the exploration there. Now that I finished all of them I can see that the game was becoming stale and without ideas, but in terms of exploration and gameplay THAW still holds up massively THAW, THPS 4 and THUG are easily the best ones. The timer made those games kind of worse for me
Tony Hawk's Underground and THUG2 are by far the best games in the series and I've only ever heard people sing their praises. Saying they were the beginning of the end is quite the hot take...
I actually LIVED through the 90s and 2000s and still can't believe the XTREME SPORTS craze, was a thing. It seems so surreal nowadays, just like dubstep being a thing in 2013. Welcome back from your hiatus, Rerez.
14:00 The final level of THUG2, Skatopia, is probably the best real-life location turned into a game level, it's so chaotic and done right. It was visited in the show Viva La Bam and a few other MTV specials I think. Edit: The THUG multiplayer, especially on PC were so amazing. It wasn't really a competitive multiplayer, rather you'd just chat and hang out with people while doing giant combos around the city. We'd all know how to make an infinite skating line and we'd just have fun with each other, we'd get scores in the hundreds of millions just for fun, no terrible progression system just having fun.
Love the "It's Just Bad" series. Your level of comedy in your reviews adds just the right amount of flavor for an entertaining video every time. I've watch every single one at this point and remember when you started it. My ex is the one thought introduced me to this channel. Never looked back.

Back in the early 2000's you pop that hard disc in the system ...you see that Neversoft logo show up on screen with the eyeball getting pierced you KNEW you were about to play some good Tony Hawk
No joke, when you guys said they added generic game modes I jokingly thought “imagine if they added deathmatch into this game”, then I heard you guys say that’s actually in the game. If someone jokingly guesses your feature and is right then there’s definitely a problem.
I remember the only time I ever stole something in my life is when the demo disc for Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 came out with the Official Playstation monthly magazine. I didn’t have enough allowance at the time so I just ripped open the package , grabbed the disc and put it under my shirt. I probably played that demo hundreds of times. It was pure heaven .
I know the feeling, I got rear-ended once, luckily I was uninjured but my car was totaled and I had to get a ride home and once I got home I watched an episode of Jimquisition to cheer me up, I told Jim about that on AskFM and they actually responded and were pretty sympathetic mentioning they'd been in a few accidents themselves.
This is making me want to check out THPS1+2 even more, it looks so good! I loved THPS2 so much as a kid, played it on my brother's N64 a lot back in the day.
Definitely worth it! 1+2 Has gameplay comparable to the Underground games (minus getting of your board, of course) and a crap ton of challenges and unlockables. A great return for the series, and I hope they do remake 3+4.
I highly recommend THPS1+2. It's the best THPS1 & THPS2 remake/remaster. Vicarious Visions, who previously made the portable versions of Tony Hawk games for Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS, did an amazing job at remaking THPS1 & THPS2, unlike Robomodo with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD. But admitting, I did like THPS HD at the time while others hated it but attempting to go back to it after playing THPS1+2, THPS1+2 completely replaces THPS HD for me. I even prefer THPS2x Xbox remake of THPS1&2 over THPS HD but THPS1+2 is the best over the two other remasters/remakes.
The Berrics wasn't the first level in the Tony Hawk series to be a direct recreation of a real-world skatepark. THPS4 had Kona Skatepark, which is a real-life skatepark in Jacksonville, Florida. If I recall, among the game's bonus unlockables was a mini-documentary about the real-life Kona.
In no particular order... Burnside Kona FDR by way of Philadelphia FDR outright in Proving Ground Lansdowne Skatopia had Real World elements Skater Island (Rest in Peace) SPoT (Skate Park of Tampa) in both the actual level in 2x and the Tampa level in THUG. That's all off the top of my head, and not including known spots worked into a game. The (San Fran) Streets level is essentially a collection of spots, from the EMB Fountain, Gonz ledge, and Hubba ledges, School II has the Carlsbad stairset in that secret area, Skate Heaven is literally this with several spots, and Hawaii has the Wallows area.
@@harleymitchelly5542 Oh wow. Gonna be real, I didn't know most of these were real places. That's really cool though; it really goes to show how much genuine care & passion went into these games (in spite of the burnout I imagine they experienced later on)
@@muddyboue Special mention does go to Skater Island. The whole place was bulldozed a while back, so THPS3 and related materials are now the last place to truly enjoy it. There's a lot of history in plenty of these parks, and I just listed outright parks. As I said, a lot of places do actually feature skate spots in the levels proper.
I really wish you guys could upload more often.. I know it's difficult and it takes a lot of time to do, but your videos are always so, so appreciated. ;w;
The game genuinely feels like an internal "test build", where they'd show rough concepts for levels and obvious placeholder assets. It feels like this game was 30% through the development cycle when someone said "We ran out of money! Ship it!"
When going into the other developers that worked on the original Tony Hawk's games, I was REALLY hoping you would have brought up Shaba Games again. It's ironic how they ended up porting (or at least helping with) THPS3 to the PS1 after Razor Freestyle Scooter, but they did a commendable job on it.
Some of the older games had online modes with the fireball death match. It was a quirky afterthought, but fun. I remember you could take advantage of a glitch and grind infinitely on top of a fire hydrant and fire fireballs constantly.
Something that didn't get said about the combos that's a Huge part of the appeal is that it's a great risk VS reward system. As your combo goes up, it becomes harder to hold manuals or grinds, making it harder to maintain your combo. Every extra trick earns you more points, while making you more likely to bail, earning you Nothing. It's a constant gamble, and personal skill judgement, "Can I hold a grind just a Little longer to hit that angle, get air, and get one more trick? Or should I bank what I've got?" It creates a consistent rise and fall of tension, entirely driven by your own gameplay, and at your own pace. The difficulty rises as You decide to push yourself further. And this makes even the earliest levels still fun. THPS1 tracked each skater's progress separately, but the combo system means that your First runs of Warehouse will be Very different to your second runs when you try a different character. It's good. I'm saying that it's good.
I was in college when this game came out. I was swamped with schoolwork, working 2 jobs. Not a lot of free time to play games anymore. But I walked by the GameStop near campus and saw a new THPS released! I ran in and bought the game without a thought. I grew up on the THPS series. I skipped my next class I had coming up, ran back to my dorm and started playing. I was back at that GameStop an hour later for a refund. I was crushed. One of the worst gaming experiences I’ve had.
To be fair, Vicarious Visions has always worked on the THPS games alongside Neversoft, they were the ones responsible for making some impressive portable ports of the games, along with Crash Bandicoot on GBA and would you look at that, they ALSO have a fantastic remake of the orange marsupial! It's a damn shame nowadays they were absorbed by Blizzard though...
@@_Twink was so upset when I heard those news. That was when I was gave up on Activision Blizzard. I'm glad they are doing terrible now because think of the money they could have made.
Funny enough, it's not the first time that "Deathmatch" mode has appeared in the series. I believe it used to be called "Firefight" and functioned in a similar way, if not the same. Thought when I played it with other people, it was more something to do in between games of horse and trick attack.
Here's something that you guys probably didn't know when talking about Tony Hawk clones. Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure was developed by the once legendary Toys For Bob and they utilized the same game engine as Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4. In fact they got permission from both NeverSoft and Activision to use the engine, and even had some of the original developers in NeverSoft to help further develop the game. So that kinda makes Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure both a THPS clone and a spin off
One of the earlier Tony Hawk games had "Skate Street" which is based off a skate park in my hometown of Ventura. They took the overall general layout of the park, and then added a bunch of verticality and extra features to take it to the next level.
Ah, yes. Skateboarding, an activity associated with youthful rebellion. Video games, a media format known for encouraging exploration beyond predetermined boundaries. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5: "STAY WITHIN THE LINES"
No matter what people say, my favorite one is still American Wasteland, I really liked the mid-00s style, the open-world, the BMX, the stupid missions, etc. Even Project 8 and Proving Ground, while pretty flawed, were still really fun experiences to me. Even at their worst, the Neversoft games were at least decent, while the Robomodo era was just a trainwreck from beggining to end and to this day, I still can't comprehend how they were able to make more than one game. Even the least offensive, Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD, isn't even close to the quality of the worst the Neversorft era offered (which is probably Proving Ground). Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 was a cash grab from the beginning and had no hope of being even mediocre, they just rushed the development to release it before losing the license (I think it was released the exact last day they could legally).
I've got a few major things I want to bring up here. I don't like how it's being framed as if THPS4 and THUG are some kind of gradual decline, when THUG2 is perhaps the tightest and most responsive-controlling skateboarding game ever conceived of. The combos that you can pull of in THUG2 are absolutely legendary, and the maps are very iconic and very well designed. The ability to get off your board gives you a way to manually level yourself and redirect your grinds, which adds so, SO much depth to the way you skate, as an experienced player, you do NOT want to be deprived of the ability to walk, the utility it adds to your combos is absolutely insane, the way that you can get off your board mid-air and switch directions, level yourself to string an airborne QP combo into a grind OR force a grind on a QP into an acid drop to string that into a revert+manual, or manually transfer to an elevated rail, it is so, so good and so responsive, absolutely 10/10 mechanic. The tony hawk series has a VERY definitive drop-off point, and that drop-off point is Project 8. Project 8 was their attempt to directly compete with the 'realism' of Skate, AND their first attempt at a simultaneous multiplatform HD release, and the result was a shallow mess of a game. I also want to point out the that in spite of everything wrong with THPS5, the inclusion of Firefight is NOT one of them. Firefight has been a staple multiplayer gamemode since Underground, and it wouldn't be multiplayer Tony Hawk without it's inclusion, that along with Graffiti, Trick Attack, and King of the Hill.
Playing tony hawks pro skater 2,3 and underground was my childhood. I am so sad to see 5 on the list but as I’ve never played it this should be an interesting video, I’m getting the popcorn!🍿🥤
Seeing a new one of these pop up in the notifications is like discovering a piece of entertaining treasure, just seeing the REREZ logo in my notifications is always something that makes me smile. Genuinely hoping this series can continue for many many years to come. 😄👍

Funny I've been binging Just Bad Games for the past few days and was hoping for a new episode huzzah! Here's hoping you guys have plenty more to cover because you gents are hilarious.
I dumped so much time into THPS 2 on the Game Boy Advance. It was an incredible translation of the game, and showed that the 2 minute score attack was just perfect for portable play. It's also where I became in awe of Vicarious Visions' ability. ... Oh hey, and look who worked on THPS 1+2!
I’ve been watching Just Bad Games for quite some time now and I look forward to every episode! Normally, I hate any kind of videos with two narrators, because it always just seems like two people just talking amongst themselves. However, this series with Shane and Adam is an exception for me. They actually talk to the viewer, rather than just talking amongst themselves and bounce off of each other really well. They’re also quite hilarious! 🤣
0:57 - He’s also internet famous for his misadventures where no one believes the guy is actually Tony Hawk. 2 on the Dreamcast was my jam. I still associate half those skate moves with Guerrilla Radio.
No surprise he’d hate it; if everything Rerez would later describe in this video weren’t enough, how about the massive update file to the game? Because what’s more fun than waiting for a patch bigger than my house to download, right?
I kind of wish that the weird lack of character and park creators was mentioned as it had become a staple of the series. I remember you couldn't make your own character in 5 but you could customize any of the skaters to look different, and the guest characters they had were basically implemented there, which were Lil Wayne, Tyler the Creator and the main character from Kings Quest
I have never played a Tony Hawk game but even I felt insulted by the companies that thought it was fine to release a game in such a terrible state, and even after patching it it looks empty and boring, I'm sorry for what you went through, Tony Hawk games' fans.
The section in MGS2 was actually a reskin of the then-upcoming skateboarding game creatively titled Evolution Skateboarding. Kind of a cross-promotion thing.
First time watching anything from this channel. It's oddly nostalgic, reminds me of the shows that would play after the Saturday morning cartoons ended 😅
I hope so too. I can’t understand how Security Breach gets such high praise when it plays like an unpolished, glitchy mess! I would absolutely pay to see Rerez make FNAF fans upset & tear this game a new one!
i remember that deathmatch fireball thing was in underground as well with its local multiplayer modes, although underground did it much better simply by having larger more varied maps with hidden areas making chasing eachother down more fun, there was another really fun ode where you highlight pllaces y preforming tricks on them and whoever had the most places highlighted by the end wins, kind of like splatoon on skateboards

I actually lost it at the Shake Shack bit
Me too, very Seinfeldian. but it's clear that a restaurant names itself before any of its stuff is famous at all and shakes are a rare feature.
The funniest part is that he’s entirely right. Why name your store ShakeShack when you only have like 3 shakes and you’re more famous for your burgers.
@The Nerd Room
The funny thing is, ShakeShack doesn't have good burgers OR shakes. It's all overpriced, overrated trash. By really, people don't have to take names so seriously, as Burger King doesn't have real royalty either.

Not even a minute in, and I'm laughing my ass off at Tony Hawk killing Morphman.
"I'm an ea-"
"AND I'M A HAWK!"
Ironic how they said that in the video lol.
@@Macrusader yeaaaaa...i know. Classic case of "watch the video before you comment"😅

That "Asteroid Belt" level though. How do you make a SPACE level boring? That's an achievement.
The game scolding you for going out of bounds is just so in-your-face. No idea why anyone thought that was a good idea.
I was never into skateboarding, but because I grew up in southern California, Tony Hawk was literally *THE* first celebrity I ever heard of, and my parents even bought me Tony Hawk merchandise when I was 4 and didn't know a THING about him or skateboarding (and yes, that was in 1999.)
Interesting how the quality of the games tapered off as general interest in skateboarding decreased, but then as skateboarding got added to the Olympics in 2020, BOOM. Good game again.
Asteroid Belt level in THPS5 felt completely lifeless. Like THPS5 game itself.
Man I was just depressed when I saw this thumbnail.
But on the plus side we got the really damn good THPS 1+2 remake a few years later, so at least this story has a happy(ish) ending.
Plus THUG PRO is pretty much just THPS3+4 with even more levels, mod support for custom soundtracks and characters, and more.
A remake means an awesome thing!

“Maybe Activision was at fault.”
Ho ho, you two have no idea how much of an understatement that is.
Now that I finished all of them I can see that the game was becoming stale and without ideas, but in terms of exploration and gameplay THAW still holds up massively
THAW, THPS 4 and THUG are easily the best ones. The timer made those games kind of worse for me
It boggles my mind that Rerez, who are usually really entertaining, absolutely hated the games from THPS4 onward.
How the hell does dubstep seem surreal? It's literally just another form of electronic music? People are so weird.
Extreme sports was amazing. Granted I was under 10 but come on man, it's more surreal that people return to watch traditional sports year after year
Rocket Power
Even Capri-Sun and Cocoa Puffs ads were in on the craze, I remember it. I was in grade school back in the early 2000s after all.
I remember watching Rocket Power, good times.
THUG was my first online PS2 experience. Those were good times.
Wait, Skatopia's REAL?!

@Tony Hunt wasn't that something that was initially considered before Vicarious Visions got thrown into the cod mine?
You guys have the most infectious energy that my life's been missing. Love it!
Big ups to Vicarious Visions for the THPS 1+2 remake; that game was sick.
THPS5, however, makes me sick.
Wow! Tony Hawk was a once great franchise that Activision completely ruined.
Burnside
Kona
FDR by way of Philadelphia
FDR outright in Proving Ground
Lansdowne
Skatopia had Real World elements
Skater Island (Rest in Peace)
SPoT (Skate Park of Tampa) in both the actual level in 2x and the Tampa level in THUG.
I really wish you guys could upload more often.. I know it's difficult and it takes a lot of time to do, but your videos are always so, so appreciated. ;w;
Missed you guys SO much! Love your videos.
I remembered a lot that Shaba Games also ever developed 2 great Mat Hoffmann's PRO BMX games.
Or should I bank what I've got?"
It creates a consistent rise and fall of tension, entirely driven by your own gameplay, and at your own pace.
Honestly, the fact that Activision released something that's not finished should be a surprise to no one.
Apparently they were in the works on THPS 3+4 until the merger axed the plans.
7:06 I love how the Earth explodes MK3 style when internet cable is disconnected from Xbox One.
THPS 4 & THUG 2 are the absolute best of the series for me, pure masterworks
Fun Fact: In the UK the first entry was called Tony Hawk’s Skateboarding. Because the word Proskater is a British curse word.
I love these! Thank you so much. I have a lot going on and the world is a miss but this brings me laughter. These are always great!!!
Playing tony hawks pro skater 2,3 and underground was my childhood. I am so sad to see 5 on the list but as I’ve never played it this should be an interesting video, I’m getting the popcorn!🍿🥤

I’ve been watching Just Bad Games for quite some time now and I look forward to every episode! Normally, I hate any kind of videos with two narrators, because it always just seems like two people just talking amongst themselves. However, this series with Shane and Adam is an exception for me.

Wow, that was probably the best episode of just bad I've ever watched. Y'all kept it rained in and talked about what you knew about.
i remember that deathmatch fireball thing was in underground as well with its local multiplayer modes, although underground did it much better simply by having larger more varied maps with hidden areas making chasing eachother down more fun, there was another really fun ode where you highlight pllaces y preforming tricks on them and whoever had the most places highlighted by the end wins, kind of like splatoon on skateboards
You know how lacking a game is when half of Rerezs video is talking about the franchise as a whole and not the game itself.
