i just watched the lifetime movie of her story, when she narrates, she talks as if she has spent the entire time defending herself to everyone. Its not right for anyone to blame her or make her feel like she has done anything wrong. You know these crimes that the perpetrators had committed ultimately aren't their fault, right? Violent crimes such as this are always committed because they were either abused themselves in some form or another. There's no such thing as free will. I don’t agree with pardoning Wanda due to abuse experienced in the past but it is important to recognize the possibility that Wanda May have Ben repeatedly raped by who knows how many men. It is important to understand that abusive men like to abuse women and then use those same women to abuse other women to appear more innocent. Everyone will get caught up in the idea of a woman abusing a woman and be distracted from the fact that at the end of the day this man did the hard core abusing and did the raping and enjoyed it. We don’t have to choose between recognizing the abuse of one woman over the abuse of another. Maybe they were both victims of the same abuse. What happened to Elizabeth is unfortunately very common in a lot of societies in that women from the man’s family, after being programmed and abused themselves over many years will help him to abuse other women. It is important to see how many men use women to not only facilitate abuse but use them to take the majority of any public shaming that may Raul’s from it. I remember vividly when Elizabeth was abducted, I had graduated High School that June and I can still see the People magazine cover with her smiling back. At 17 I was one of those people who asked STUPID questions, thinking if she was out walking with them across a street, why not run or scream? But it is incredibly unfair to ask that, and everyone experiences trauma in different ways, all that really matters is she is alive and healthy today.
She's very brave. She is also very fortunate. If you have the unconditional love of a family, you are far more likely to make it through something like this. When you don't... It scrambles any tiny foundation you ever managed to build leaving you incomprehensibly shattered.

I recently watched a video of Oprah interviewing the young man who was kidnapped and held captive by his abuser for years before he was rescued. Her interview style was atrocious. Nearly every question she asked him and his family was one of those "stupid questions" that Elizabeth Smart referred to. The Oprah interview was cringe-worthy and such a stark contrast to this interview.
What an amazing woman Elizabeth is. I can not believe they released her from prison they both should be in prison for life without parole shame on our justice system.

I love her for saying the circumstances shouldn't matter, that something like what happened to her shouldn't happen to anyone, no matter if it's a 14-year-old girl or a woman working the street corner. society still puts too much blame on anyone but the people responsible, especially the VICTIM.

I watched the lifetime movie and cried when she said things like “i felt the cup of water was a miracle”. She was living through something so disparaging and disgusting and she still found things to be grateful for and thankful for. I felt terribly guilty after watching it.

How can you think of escape and organize it when you are alone, powerless, alternatly starved and fed garbage while being drugged and repeatedly raped daily? Why is oue society so into blaming the victim? It isn't even logical ro expect a person in that situation to save themselves. It is rarely ever even possible. So why can't we as society understand that the bad guy is the bad guy... Not rhe victim?

I remember vividly when Elizabeth was abducted, I had graduated High School that June and I can still see the People magazine cover with her smiling back. At 17 I was one of those people who asked STUPID questions, thinking if she was out walking with them across a street, why not run or scream? But it is incredibly unfair to ask that, and everyone experiences trauma in different ways, all that really matters is she is alive and healthy today.

She's very brave. She is also very fortunate. If you have the unconditional love of a family, you are far more likely to make it through something like this. When you don't... It scrambles any tiny foundation you ever managed to build leaving you incomprehensibly shattered.

1) My heart breaks for Elizabeth. 2) Due process is what I love about this country and in this case it was the prison who miscalculated her release. Even if the lady begged to stay in prison until 2024 they would not allow her to just stay. 3) I do not think this woman is an imminent threat to anybody but herself and she will probably end up in a psych ward.

I recently watched a video of Oprah interviewing the young man who was kidnapped and held captive by his abuser for years before he was rescued. Her interview style was atrocious. Nearly every question she asked him and his family was one of those "stupid questions" that Elizabeth Smart referred to. The Oprah interview was cringe-worthy and such a stark contrast to this interview.
