This fundraiser is an annual event, hosted by the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine. May 12th is Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) Awareness Day. Each year we dedicate the month of May to raising funds for this specific illness. ME/CFS is one of the main illness areas we focus on at the Institute, this includes treating patients with ME/CFS, conducting research, and publishing ME/CFS based articles.
According to the CDC, "836,000 to 2.5 million Americans have ME/CFS. At least one-quarter of individuals with ME/CFS are bedbound or housebound at some point in the disease and most never regain their pre-disease level of functioning. ME/CFS strikes people of all ages and racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, and is diagnosed two to four times more often in women."
Dr. Nancy Klimas, Executive Director of the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine has been at the forefront of ME/CFS research for over 35 years. She leads a team of researchers and clinicians who are passionate about bringing the underpinnings of this illness to light.
"I believe the immune findings in ME/CFS are proven. It's not controversial, and it's not just a hypothesis. There is immune activation, there are malfunctioning cells and a significant degree of malfunction in the immune system. I have no difficulty in saying with great certainty that the immune system in ME/CFS does not work as it should." - Dr. Nancy Klimas
It is our goal at the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine to provide help and hope to those living with this illness. Any donation you make to the Institute allows us the opportunity to improve patient care and groundbreaking research. ME/CFS awareness is something close to the hearts of those at INIM. Please consider donating today.
