    Lol interesting how the brightness (probably the "amount" of lightwaves being in phase/field flux density) reacts to the frames of the camera. So as long as you got the right fps on the cam or the right brightness on the screen that you record with the cam are "in phase" too, or are a multiple of the cams fps, or just just more than enaugh there are no weird wave patterns. I really like the properties of light being explained (in my head) just by looking at these few seconds :D

    Loaded this onto a Lenovo G50. Straight Ubuntu, no dual boot. Following this video it went flawless up until Ubuntu said it was loaded and said to reboot. I followed the advice to pull the thumb drive before I clicked to reboot. Got an instant blue screen with a dead under score. Dumb on my part. However, I powered down and restarted and Ubuntu is working great. My advice is to just leave the thumb drive in until the reboot is done.
    As a side note, this computer was a freebie but I could not get the wifi to to connect to my router in Win10 (invalid IP config. That would not go away). No problem in Ubuntu. It started right up.

    On your point about Linux compatible laptops. Whilst it is true that many laptops will have 100% compatibility out of the box. With those that don't, there still is hope, so don't buy another model just yet.
    I have a Lenovo G50-45 which is not compatible with Ubuntu 14.04. Only the wifi is not supported because of its proprietary broadcom wifi chip.
    However, with a quick google search and some copying and pasting of terminal commands the wifi works flawlessly.
    I also had a wifi adapter for my desktop that was not compatible with Linux. A simple slew of copied and pasted terminal commands fixed that very quickly.

    Steve, thanks for the vid. but having installed everything from 14.04 thru 17.04 over the last few months, I doubt that the default install will give users the codecs and proprietary software they need to watch vids, incl RUclips videos. This set of commands has proven to be a must for me as soon as I get an internet connection post install :
    ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo add-apt-repository multiverse
    'multiverse' distribution component enabled for all sources.
    ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo add-apt-repository universe
    'universe' distribution component enabled for all sources.
    then:
    sudo apt-get update;
    sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras # note the *semi-colon* between those two commands - the update has to run first.
    Accept any licensing prompts and you should be able to play videos. Installing VLC is a workaround but you wont get the TrueType fonts or Flash - your call. Some claim that they can watch videos after installing a web browser other than Firefox, and I expect that there are other solutions out there, but for me this is a relatively quick fix for an annoying problem with default Ubuntu installs.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu-restricted-extras

    The install process takes very long. I'm installing Ubuntu 18.04.2 and it took over 2 hours to install and now, after restarting, the updates have been going for the past 45 minutes. You made it look like a breeze and you even mentioned that. :(

    I have the previous model of this laptop (W540). I purchased a thinkpad because of their supposed compatibility with linux, the W540 is even "ubuntu certified" whatever that means. I managed to install ubuntu without much trouble but was never able to get decent battery life, 2.5 hours at best vs 4 hours on windows. I also had problems with wifi at the campus I'm studying at, I wouldn't be surpised if this is an issue with their rather flaky network though. I spent months playing around with bumblebee/nvidia prime/nouveau/powertop etc trying to get decent battery life. I tried various flavours of linux including debian yet made no progress. Some people seem to have had success with this model but I wonder if one of the bios updates I did broke some compatibility. I now run windows 10 on this laptop which works mostly OK except that lenovo did a really half-arsed job of the touchpad drivers (touchpad on linux was fine). In short I can have linux with rubbish battery life or windows with rubbish touchpad drivers. Ironically, buying a thinkpad has resulted in me switching back to windows after using linux exclusively for around 18 years! I regret buying a new thinkpad and actually wish I'd sent in back. If I were buying again I'd probably look for an older used model going cheap. I'd save a lot of money and have a much better chance of having a working linux laptop.

      17.10 has the best driver support and newest software, but if you know your setup works with older Linux's 16.04 may be more stable for non-cutting edge workloads

    I can't find a single tutorial that helps me here. This one comes the closest so hopefully your still watching for comments.
    I downloaded unetbootin-mac-661.dmg my daughter WAS helping but is stumped. Run that, opens a gray window, but when I select desktop NOTHING shows up. I cannot get this onto the USB because it simply isn't showing up. Of course dragging it does nothing, it's got to be "installed" right? And that's where I sit. Not a clue what to do here. Tried a few different USB sticks too, not the issue since the darn thing won't even show the desktop it's on. I haven't even made it to the point of sticking the USB into the laptop or how to boot off of it.

    Thank you! I tried with the help of an expert but apparently you can't boot your ideapad lenovo 100s from a USB device. I have also searched for more info in the Lenovo official site but I found out that many people using the same model had exactly the same problem. They all wanted to switch to Linux. This is definitely the last time I buy a machine which runs windows For now I have just managed to sabotage the system in the sense that I turned off most of its apps by literally having to hack into my own computer!

    Thank you for the very informative tutorial. I've recently bought a Lenovo ideapad 100s and I want to switch to Linux because windows 10 eats up most of my ram and cpu as well as keeping installing programs I never wanted...
    Here are my questions:
    Can I use the same instructions in the video to try Linux OS?
    How many gigabytes do we need for the USB key?
    Any suggestions on the type of Linux OS I should use (I'm not a programmer)?
    Thanks a lot!

    • @Zandman26
      @Zandman26 8 лет назад +1

      Sorry for the late awnser, if you download Ubuntu Linux as shown in the video the steps are the same. Many Windows users like Mint that has a very similar installation.
      The USB drive for big Linux systems like Ubuntu I would say that the drive needs to be 3 GB or more.
      To recommend a Linux (Distro) or OS is very hard because it's very much based on personal opinion, any of the top 8 distros/OS here distrowatch.com/ are very easy to get started with.

    I had bought a new Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series laptop yesterday,which had come with a ubuntu version of 14.04. I decided to update and started the update process in the terminal. When it had reached 100%, it was unable to install and it gave the message,"Your Link May be Broken". But when i restarted the computer,it just hangs when i give my password at the login screen. Then i decided to install ubuntu 16.10 which i had downloaded long before to install it on my desktop.But it was a 32 bit version, and my laptop was a 64 bit.However i installed ubuntu 16.10 on my laptop,but i get a black screen when trying to install. Then i searched the net and got it to work,and installed it. When i restarted my laptop i simply get a message from dell assist saying that there is no bootable devices and i changed the boot to harddisk and when it loads the screen changes to white with weird symbols like (; (( ;'' ;;:; ;;) and it gives the message saying "Your Computer has low graphics-mode",but i have a basic graphics card (intel cherryview). I saw youtube videos but none of them work, and the great thing is that i do not have the chance of getting back to 14.04 because i erased it and installed the 16.10. Please help. Thanks

    Per your video SDA=drive1, SDB=drive2, SDC=drive3 etc, does this naming convention apply if you have a M.2 PCIE SSD (card) installed? It would make sense to load OS 16.04 into that and use other drives for data content. If so how would you configure folders for common usage to utilise other on board SSD's i.e. myDocs or Documents folder with store actual content to an alternate drive other than the one that is running the OS exclusively?

      This happens with some laptops which are not Linux certified - the company who made your wifi chip won't let them ship the firmware, but it can be downloaded during the install process. Plug a Cat5 Ethernet cable in, install and then check out 'System Settings -> Additional Drivers'. And if you don't want to bother with any of that, buy a System 76 laptop or a Dell Ubuntu XPS 13

      Almost all laptops work with FN keys by default, what is the brand / model you are using? Did you use Ubuntu 16.04 or 17.10?

    I've tried installing ubuntu on my new laptop and everything works great until it reaches a point where it just hangs indefinitely repeating the same line of code in the terminal over and over. It goes on for hours (it lasted for 8) and eventually I have to turn it off. Do I just wait for it or is something wrong? Any help would be great because I've tried looking on the ubuntu forums and nothing.
