The reptiles were found to be malnourished, and living in crowded, confined spaces.

The breeder should be friendly, knowledgeable, and easy to contact.
Search online for testimonials.
RUclips and reptile forums are a great place to get recommendations for great bearded dragon breeders.
Search for someone local, and ask to see how they care for their bearded dragon family.
Excellent husbandry is a good sign of a healthy dragon family.
Or visit a nearby reptile show. Many bearded dragon breeders attend these shows, hoping to meet you!
And they'll be happy to answer your questions.
This will also give you the opportunity to gently handle and observe the dragon.

This is very very true. I had an absolutely heartbreaking experience with my first dragon. However, the animals who are in those “don’t buy” locations still need help. So… if you’re buying from one of those big box retailers, consider that dragon a RESCUE who will require a heightened level of care.

I got my bearded dragon, Draco, from PetSmart - of course, I worked there at the time. He's 5 years old now and perfectly healthy. They seemed to take good care of the animals at the location I worked at.

I got my bearded dragon from PetSense. There are no breeders that I know of in my local area; but, the breeder that Dav Kaufman recently did a video about is Fairy Tai Dragons in Florida.
