My dad showed me the instrumental version of this song when I was very little, and my love for it has stayed with me into my adult life now. I guess you could say this was my first taste of magic. It's hard to put into words, but the instrumental *spoke* without a single lyric. This is the first time I've actually found lyrics to this masterpiece and I shed a tear. @@Shinjitsusei Indeed, this was launched as a promotional Single for the 2007 Tour through Finland that Nightwish made with a band called Indica (Jonsu is the singer of this band), that is why they used her voice for this song. The official album version was left as an instrumental but the Platinum Edition of the album has this version in it too.
I made a transcript of the English translation / lyrics: Wilderness sleeps, and now, in my thoughts I travel over forests and slumbering water Lady Moon in the sky lights the night Painting the landscape, the shade of the North Is this a dream, or death in which I may return to the place where the embers already surrender under the snow As I step into the world, in the time of the wilderness The first snow fell twice Painted a picture of my soul This rugged beauty and infinite loneliness of my childhood's woods and skies That wistfulness echoes through this journey As dawn is breaking, the night tells its story Rugged is the beauty and infinite my loneliness That what the soul wishes for The grave of my cradle, the place of my grave is the Last of the Wilds Where did the others disappear The swamp witches, the maiden towers and the trees rustling in the shadows I planted a lily of the valley in the everlasting snow When the silence came I relied on the future The first snow fell twice Painted a picture of my soul This rugged beauty and infinite loneliness of my childhood's woods and skies That wistfulness echoes through this journey As dawn is breaking, the night tells its story Rugged is the beauty and infinite my loneliness That what the soul wishes for The grave of my cradle, the place of my grave is the Last of the Wilds
If you still haven't been there, do it. Visiting Finland is definitely worth it. I have spent there 4 months during winter when I was studying in Oulu and then I went to Finland 4 times for vacation (two times to Turku and 2 times to Lappeenranta). And it has always been worth it. Grabbing a bicycle and just exploring the cycling paths along the lakes, or borrowing a boat / canoe and visiting a few islands. There was for example an island near Lappeenranta with an abandoned bunker from WWII and it was accessible for urbex. I also remember when my friends from Riihikoski near Turku took me on a trip to Rauma where we boarded a motorboat, sailed about 8 km to Nurmes island and until 3 am we walked along the island and searched for Geocaches. When we reached the westernmost part of the island, it was already dark, but we could see and hear the waves of the sea and that moment was simply unimaginable. There was just the island, the sea and somewhere faraway on the other side of the sea, hidden behind the horizont, was Sweden. Best memories of my life. So, if you can, visit Finland.
If I had a personal anthem, this would be it. I love the outdoors, the mountains, and the great forests of the North. My ancestry is from a warm country but I’ve never felt more at home than when I lived in and explored the northwoods. 🌲❄️🏡
Love this so much. When I listen, I have to listen again and again, as it's so addicting. I would love to see Tuomas, Troy & Johanna perform this when they bring AURI on tour one day.
Jonsu's tone color is similar to Anette's, maybe that's why Nightwish thought she would be a good fit at the time. Regardless, I love Jonsu and this sounds great.
It’s unfortunate that not even in the iTunes library you can find this song with the lyric audio, except only instrumental. Such a beautiful lyric and amazing melody as in who sang it; Jonsu. Been into depth learning Finnish, so I’m super motivated as some may perceive it.

The sun moving along at 3:28 is such an amazing sight. The experience of riding the Earth as it spins around under the sun is lost in the lower latitudes - this makes me want to travel above the Arctic Circle, to experience it for myself - and Finland would be such a beautiful place to do it. Not sure how easy it is, though. (Travel agent: "You want to go _where??"_ )
It's pretty easy to travel above the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia and Finland. There are roads and hotels so you could just go there by yourself, but there are also bus tours if you don't want to drive.
i love both versions of this song, last of the wilds and this version, love it even more now i can read the words being spoken, finnish landscape is awesome also
I remember the first time i heard this song several years ago, it was the instrumental version, but i was enraptured and fell in love instantly! Had to listen to it several times again. No song had ever hooked me like that before or since. That straight rock wall in 2:05 looks very much familiar to me. I think it is Olhava in Repovesi national park, southern Finland, but not south like Helsinki. If it is that place, then I can say that up there on that cliff is perfect places to camp with tents. Me and my 3 friends were only 13-14 years old, when we were hiking in that vast wilderness 4 nights and days. Our parents bring us with cars to small parking area edge of that national park area, and we had 4 days and they come to take us from that same place. It was time before cellphones, in 1992. We had a plan to stay every night in different location. But when we get to that area, where it was perfect for tents, and highest spot had 50meters straight wall, down to al Olhava lake, we had to stay there 2 nights. It was some 17-18km from that place where parents left us. Magical nights we experience there. Stars were so bright that I never experienced nightsky like that. In day time, we explore the surrounding areas. There are famous place somewhere near there, that have rock/cliff walls like that, and have some 5000-8000 years old drawings, or caveart if u will. Ofc those pics are not in caves. Red colored depictions of human and animal figures. Ancient artist were painting those from boats or something like that, above lake water line. Scholars say that they believe it was "hotspot" or high "traffic" area at the time, and tribes left messages to each others in there. Like todays market squares, or effin social media
Wonderful song ❣️,i am astonished. I didn't know that exist. I love it ❤️ at once. NW you are great and your country is really amazing. Thank you 😊 for the video Linda and for translation too.
The vocal intonations are very reminiscent of Russian folk singing. No wonder we are neighbors. And it goes to show mutual influences Slavic and Finnish tribes had on each other.
If you look at the map of Europe at the death of Charles the great in year 814 it all makes sense, Novgorod was a city/town near border between Slavonic Tribe and Finnish Tribe during that time.
Still today an amazing tune and lyrics, this video just takes your breathe away, thank you for sharing the lyrics and this amazing video Suomi rocks. Greetings from CPH 🤘🙏🇩🇰🙏🤘
I'm not sure yet whether I'm going to attend the Decades show in Lahti this year but however... Would be awesome to have this song performed there, with Jonsu's vocals!
@@yagamischrader2824 I teach you a bit: "No niin" means pretty much anything. When the bus arrives, you can say "no niin". If you happen to break something, you can say "no niin". When you make a discovery you say "no niin"... It applies to any situation, just change the tone of your voice according to the mood. Now you can handle any situation in finnish!
"No niin" is a filler word and used in many situations where is pretty obvius what you mean by it. For example, three most common situations "no niin" is used are: when you're waiting something to happen and you want it to happen already OR Something just happened (finally) OR when somebody agrees with what you said. Pretty unnecessary word or two word combination and basically mean just "well".
Could you please share your list, please? I'm in the same situation as you are :) Mustering up my courage by listening to songs in Finnish to start learning this mysterious language one day.
I don't really have a list. I found several Finnish bands, but most of them had the lyrics in English. Korpiklaani and nightwish are the only bands that I kept listening since i made this comment. Hevisaurus is a good one. I ended up not studying Finnish, perhaps i should start now.
@@danielbelmir0 I discovered Finnish thanks to Korpiklaani. Then I realized that Nightwish also have some staff in Finnish that's worth admiring. Thank you for the tip about Hevisaurus, I'll check it out.
Didn't even remember this version existed, until I saw this on comments of HalfLife Sistah's reaction video. I think that English translation does not fully make justice for "original " Finnish lyrics. I would love to hear someone trying to make an English arrangement as well.

Fun fact: Jonsu = Leena Johanna Salomaa. Her last name salomaa is the Finnish for wilderness, the wilds.
Wow!!! I didn't know that!!! 😍😍😍
Nice! ❤

technically salo is a type of forest or an island, erämaa is a more proper word for wilderness especially as a concept.
Technically last of the wilds translates to erämaan viimeinen. Easy as that

Painting the landscape, the shade of the North
Is this a dream, or death
in which I may return to the place
where the embers already surrender under the snow
As I step into the world,
in the time of the wilderness
The first snow fell twice
Painted a picture of my soul
This rugged beauty and infinite loneliness
of my childhood's woods and skies
That wistfulness echoes through this journey
As dawn is breaking, the night tells its story
Rugged is the beauty and infinite my loneliness
That what the soul wishes for
The grave of my cradle, the place of my grave
is the Last of the Wilds
Where did the others disappear
The swamp witches, the maiden towers
and the trees rustling in the shadows
I planted a lily of the valley
in the everlasting snow
When the silence came I relied on the future
The first snow fell twice
Painted a picture of my soul
This rugged beauty and infinite loneliness
of my childhood's woods and skies
That wistfulness echoes through this journey
As dawn is breaking, the night tells its story
Rugged is the beauty and infinite my loneliness
That what the soul wishes for
The grave of my cradle, the place of my grave

Nukkuu korpi, ja nyt, aatoksissain minä matkaa teen
Yli metsien, uinuvan veen
Kuutar taivaan yön valaisee
Maalaa maiseman, pohjoisen siimeksen
Unta onko tää,
Vai kuolema jossa palata sinne saan missä
hiillos jo luovuttaa lumen alla
Kun astun maailmaan, erämaan aikaan
Ensilumi satoi kahdesti
Maalasi sieluni taulun
Tää jylhä kauneus ja ääretön yksinäisyys
Lapsuuteni metsän, taivaan
Kaikuu se haikeus halki tän matkan
Aamun tullen yö tarinansa kertoo
Jylhä on kauneus ja ääretön yksinäisyyteni
Sitä henkeensä halajaa
Kehtoni hauta, hautani paikka
Erämaan viimeinen on
Minne katosivat muut
Suon noidat, neidontornit
Ja varjoissa havisevat puut
Kielon istutin ikihankeen
Ja hiljaisuuden tultua luotin tulevaan
Ensilumi satoi kahdesti
Maalasi sieluni taulun
Tää jylhä kauneus ja ääretön yksinäisyys
Lapsuuteni metsän, taivaan
Kaikuu se haikeus halki tän matkan
Aamun tullen yö tarinansa kertoo

Finland, the Land of the Thousand Lakes. Pure and stunning.
It's so much more than just that.
Minnesota is angry
Over 168 000 lakes :)
There are a lot of good music in Finish, I'll listen to more Finish music to take courage to start learning this wonderful and strange language.
I'm so in love with this song 🖤
Kiitos!
This video is one of my favourites ;)
+Anton Poleg Thank you!
I had no idea this had lyrics! Thank youuu! 🥰
Didn't even remember this version existed, until I saw this on comments of HalfLife Sistah's reaction video. I think that English translation does not fully make justice for "original " Finnish lyrics. I would love to hear someone trying to make an English arrangement as well.
It would be nice, but it still not he same. At least half of the soul and the meaning of this song is in the language :)
Beautiful country greetings from Indonesia 🇮🇩
Still Awesome in 2022.😎👍💯
