On both our 08 and 12, I lower the filter to the frame rail, slide across, and lift up by removing the intake boot. I loosen from below with large slip joint pliers. Our heat shields are still stock, not smashed.
This guy should make a new movie called dumb and dumber. Just remove a few screws and drop the plastic splash shield. You have to get under the car anyhow to pull the drain plug. If you don’t want to make a mess, just take a quarter inch drill and put a hole in the bottom of the filter.
I just changed the oil & filter on my 2008 Suzuki SX4. I removed the filter from underneath the car (supported by a jack stand, of course!), and the job was pretty easy. I've seen 2 RUclips videos, this being the second one, where the oil filter was replaced via the engine bay. No offense, but that way is harder, not smarter. Hope this advice helps someone 👍🏽
I tried this on the weekend. You must have way small hands 😂. I did it from the underside with vice grips to loosen to filter. I also cover the oxygen sensor wire as oil will spill onto it.
I made this video for the 2013 cvt Canadian sx4 with air conditioning. It is impossible to remove from the bottom as you can see at the two minute mark the filter is just sitting on a cross member there is no room at all to pass it down or reach up. I don't know which other years or models are the same. RUclips had only videos of removing the filter from the bottom which does not pertain to mine.
I lower it like you do for removal except instead of bringing it across I bring it straight up at that point. Also I just use a cheap set of offset oil filter pliers to loosen.
It's a Fram wrench which attaches to a ratchet. I live in Canada and bought it at Canadian tire. Make sure you get the one I recommend with the springs. The other one was made by Fram also but is useless for the sx4
I'm pretty sure this ended up being such a pain because the car was never designed for this large of a motor. Same reason accessing the passenger headlight bulb is such a pain. I have a 2013 btw so I get it.
That aluminum cover over the exhaust manifold comes off with a ten mm . Making it much easier.

You can't access it any easier from the bottom. Even with the heat shield off you still need to do it this way. At least with the 2L US version.

The awd 2013 you can't go from the bottom at all the rad and a support member are in the way. That's why you have to do it this way.
Easiest way is from under, even if you have to remove the bottom engine cover.
Great vid. Started using Royal Purple 10-2840 filters -- small enough to maneuver/install with one hand.

You can get to it much easier from the top....mine is a 2010 same thing.
