  • The Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) was an exact contemporary of JS Bach and GF Handel. His most notable works are the 550 keyboard sonatas, mostly written toward the end of his life when he was living in Spain.
While Scarlatti's works are performed on a range of keyboard instruments, this transcription by Karl Tausig (Liszt's most capable pupil and one of the great virtuoso pianists of the 19th century) makes use of the characteristics of the modern piano.
