Chopin Polonaise in A Flat Major, Op. 53 ("Heroic") - LIVE with score #chopin #piano #chopinpiano
The most popular of Chopin’s Polonaises, the so-called “Heroic,” was written in 1842.
When Chopin’s partner, the French novelist George Sand, heard the work, she described it as a heroic symbol of revolution. While Chopin himself rarely attached any descriptive program to his music, this particular piece does have an overtly warlike atmosphere.
When Liszt taught it to his students, he wanted to hear the “hooves of the Polish cavalry” in the famous E major section, with its driving left hand octaves and march-like rhythms.
Performer: Jonathan Bradley
Venue: Winthrop Hall, University of Western Australia
Piano: Shigeru Kawai

Mozart Fantasia in C minor, K. 475 - Live Performance #mozart #piano #classicalmusic

Mozart's epic Fantasia in C minor was composed in Vienna in 1785. It was published alongside the Sonata in C minor, K. 457, and the two can be considered one larger work. This was the fertile creative period in which Mozart also produced some of his greatest piano concertos and his most popular opera, The Marriage of Figaro. The Fantasia is an episodic work, almost like a series of operatic sce...
Rachmaninoff Polka de W.R. - Live performance #rachmaninoff #classicalpiano #classicalmusic

Rachmaninoff wrote “WR’s Polka” in 1911. It is a spectacular rearrangement of a piece he remembered hearing his father play years earlier, hence the title - “Wassily Rachmaninoff’s Polka”. The original work is in fact by Franz Behr, but Rachmaninoff was most likely unaware of this fact. A highly virtuosic showpiece, the Polka de W.R. was dedicated to another master piano arranger, Leopold Godow...

The "Flight of the Bumblebee" was written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov around 1900. It forms a short interlude in his opera, "The Tale Of Tsar Saltan" and is one of the composer's most popular pieces. Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote this spectacular piano arrangement for his own concert use. He also recorded the work a number of times. #bumblebee #classicalpiano #pianocover

Thanks very much Stefan! 😊
This sounds amazing! From my understanding I thought it was believed that Liszt preferred the Erard while Chopin preferred the Pleyel even while enjoying both.
@@brianmichaels444 thanks very much Brian! Yes, I think you’re right - Chopin probably preferred Pleyel, at least when he was feeling strong enough to make his own sound. He felt the Erard was a more all-purpose kind of tone. Liszt was much more a champion of the Erard, as it was more robust and had the new escapement action that allowed for fast repeated notes. He exploited the Erard action a lot throughout his career.
@@jonathanbradley8698You definitely have taught me something today about the escapement action. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and outstanding piano playing!
@@brianmichaels444no problem, thanks Brian. 😊
소리가 너무좋다..!!! 일반적인 익숙한 스타인웨이 음색이랑 다른 소리가 나네요😊
@sergio6357 thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yes the tone is very different from the modern piano, and even quite different to some other pianos from the same period. There was much more variety in the 19th century. 🙂

I would like to ask how long it took you to learn the piece ? my hardest piece is liszt's sonata in b minor and i was wondering if i could play islamey or if i would have to work some more
Hi Darwin, I learnt it when I was younger so not really sure how long it took. A good few months I think. The Liszt Sonata is huge, but at least its t has moments of repose. Islamey doesn’t really let up for the whole 8 minutes so it’s tough to keep the stamina up. I’d say if you can play the Liszt Sonata then give the Balakirev a go and you’ll soon find the differences!
@@jonathanbradley8698 that balakirev was sadistic for this one. Thanks for the replie tho I'll try that one day

@charmaineeleanor2420 haha thanks Charmaine 😊
Hey Jonathan, Besides the fact that I love your playing, may I ask you something else? I just received a restored Erard Grand piano from 1905. The restorer kept the original hammerfilts and reshaped them, but it costs me a lot of effort and tension to get a good and normal tone out of it. The tone starts soft en flat it’s very difficult to shape a good melodical line. Eventhough I am used to play on early instruments. You got some new Erard Hammers isn’t? How does it play and feel? When you stare at the keys of my Bluthner from 1870 it already starts to sing haha. I am very curious about your experiences.
@martijnthomas6017 Hi Martin, thanks for your kind comments. My restorer replaced the hammers with new shanks and hammer heads. The 160-year old hammer shanks were too weak and would have broken if we reused them. There was a choice of felt density and we chose the medium one. I find it is very easy to get a big bright ringing sound, but not always easy to play softly. But the piano has a big range of dynamics and it’s due for some more voicing soon, so that will help. By the sound of it, you might need to send the hammers off for new felt if the original shanks are in good condition. Do you know if it’s a Paris Erard or a London one?
