I like the design too. I feel like we’re being told in general right now to consider anything with bezels as “uglier”, but it’s just a different look. I don’t think something should be suddenly considered “ugly” just because there’s a newer design in existence. In my opinion, iPads have always had a certain elegance to the way they’re designed, no matter which model. The existence of bezels was one of many reasons I specifically chose to buy the 2017 iPad Pro model. It’s a big device as tablets go, and I like having the extra space to hold onto it, plus it still had the home button. It’s cool to see the entire iPad lineup get Pencil support now too! I could see this smallest form being especially convenient for students and travelers.
I have an iPad mini 2 and love the mini design. I also have a Samsung S8 phone with curved edge display, so no bezels, and while its beautiful I can't tell you how many times I have accidentally opened an application because I was simply trying to hold the phone. I can only imagine how much more that would happen when trying to hold a bigger tablet versus a smaller phone. Honestly the bezels don't bother me, they may date the tablet a bit, mainly because most everything no longer has them now but I personally don't think they make it uglier at all and in some instances can actually make the design more functional.

Liza I picked up a 256GB mini 5 few days ago - brilliant little gem. Love the home button- matches my 6SP. Lightning charging terrific. Smart cover okay . Use mine mainly for watching You Tube,watching football matches /statistics. Twitter/Facebook- very portable. Speakers not a problem.
That is what I like about 7-8 inch tablets around. I can get them in my coat pockets or my wife's handbag without an issue and great for reading on the plane, making notes, a little work, gps mapping. They are my travel tablets of choices and I been waiting for the new ipad mini for a long while.
I have an iPad mini 2 and I love it! It can easily fit in my small purse so I don't have to lug around a much bigger tablet. However my mini was beginning to slow down and show its age so I'm glad to see an updated mini come out. I wish they would have updated it a bit more with the better speakers, etc but overall I'm happy and looking forward to purchasing one soon.
Another superb review Lisa. Been hovering on buying an iPad Mini for quite some time now. I had the iPad Air previously but found I didn't actually use it that much. Prefer the slightly smaller form factor of the mini. All I needed was a review from my favourite tech reviewer to seal the deal :)

@@futojanos Thanks for that. I had often considered an older one but was holding out until the tech had moved on a bit. The Apple Pencil is quite important. I have one already as my wife bought it with her iPad Pro 12.9 but she hardly ever uses it so I can commandeer it for my use ;)

I'm glad they didn't really update the design. I'm a private pilot and I was using an iPad Mini 4 in the cockpit; it was almost the perfect tablet for a small plane where every inch counts but it was definitely slow with apps like Foreflight (a very demanding, pro level electronic flight bag app). The Mini 5, though, runs everything I throw at it like butter, and I can still use it with the same kneeboard, and the same smart cover when I'm using it at home. I also love the pencil support, which has me on my way to being totally paperless in the cockpit, at least as far as what's on my knee. My one slight disappointment is that they moved the controls and camera a tiny bit, but enough that my Mini 4 keyboard case (and I love using the iPad Mini with a keyboard!) doesn't really work with the Mini 5. I'd guess they probably had to do that for technical reasons because I don't want to think they're just messing with us. Otherwise, though, it's the perfect update - same thing, just faster and with pencil support.

Two thumbs up for Lisa! She’s 100% correct on every point she’s made! I too have the iPad 12.9 (both 2017 & 2018) and I can honestly say it’s refreshing not having the face recognition as it always opens the tablet or iPhone 11 when I’m only glancing at it while doing something else. I hate that! But I’ve thoroughly enjoyed FaceTime on this iPad mini 5, better than with iPad Pro 12.9 because it’s easier to handle with one hand. I enjoy turning it into a large phone, simply sending the call from iPhone by pressing the audio button and choosing iPad and there you have your call on iPad mini. I love the ebook reading as it feels like the perfect size and also for notes with the pencil! And finally it can fit in any pants pocket, be it a pair of jeans, dress pants, front pocket, back pocket, coat pocket. I never dreamed I would enjoy this iPad so much because the pro 12.9 is supposed to be the ultimate iPad, right?
I actually dont really get the criticism on this iPad Mini. Apple has really done a good job on this one. Some people criticize apple as lazy. I think this design isn’t awful. I actually like it along with the new iPad Pro design equally. “If it ain’t broke, dont fix it.” Besides, people just don’t realize it cost money to redesign a product. If it was redesigned, it’d be more and more expensive. The mini is perfect for many people, especially people that like a pocket size tablet on the road. Some people said iPad mini shouldn't exist anymore because phablets are now there to replace it. Honestly though, no offense, but I think phablet shouldn’t really exist because they’re way too big to fit in jeans and trousers. The mini isn’t too bad to be honest. Nice video by the way.
Harold Lee Yes, the choice of no update or keeping the classic old design with the latest SOC is a no brainier for these niche products. A good business decision for sure, and great for consumers who love that more compact size. I agree, win-win and there is a silent minority that are less concerned about the aesthetics of bezels and more interested in usability, the iPad Mini remains the best tablet for this.
The 64gb storage and associated costs is worth the criticism. I honestly think it's quite mean.. games are a lot bigger, media is higher definition, 128gb should be the base capacity as Lisa alludes. Other than that, it's pretty good value where Apple's concerned
Sean yes, I suppose from a youth POV it will be different from my own generation, 40-60’s. The 64gb is a sweet spot for me. I have never surpassed this, usually around 30gb free. My older ipads of 32gb do have issues, but I doubt I will need more than 64gb on an iPad as I do not play games or take videos with it. I cannot see any usage that would push me even close. My demographic would probably majority agree. Obviously for the teen market the variables are different. If they released with 128gb standard, knowing Apple there would be a $75 price hike, but I agree if Apple gave something for nothing then 128gb would help some and I would not complain, though I suspect it will be just overkill for me.

I agree I bought a 9.7 and disliked it because I do everything on my phone and I found myself moving my hands around to much and typing was difficult for me. So I returned it for the mini and I love it so much! Lightweight small but yet bigger than my phone and the bezels are actually good. They give me a place to hold the thing. Does anyone recommend a screen protector? Please help thanks

I have a second gen 12.9 and it’s my baby but like you said it stays home. I use everyday almost all day but when I leave the house it doesn’t. I want the mini 5 to be mainly my portable library I really do mean I’m buying it mainly to read books, however I’ve been waiting for pencil support to grab a mini because it will be the device I take with me. So even though it’s primary use will be housing and displaying e-books I’ll be able to use it for other things when I’m out and about. The size is perfect for fitting into any of my bags, and for my uses the mini 5 is absolutely perfect.

Bought a dji Mavic 2 Pro drone a couple weeks ago and wanted something better than an old Note 4 paired to the controller. Picked up a MiniPad5 256k/Cell and am really impressed with the package. All the tablet functions are cream on top of the perfect size and bezels for mounting in the drone controller. Glad I waited before buying an older MiniPad. Cost vs utility to that of the dji smart controller or crystal sky makes the MiniPad5 a bargain for me. Also bought the Pencil which includes a USB Lightning to standard USB charging cable adapter. No need to ever plug the Pencil into the iPad's posterior after the initial pairing. Funny that the salesman said this could not be done when I asked.
I love the mini for portability, I still wish they made it more like the 10.5 iPad Pro, but I'm glad they did listen to those of us who want small equipment. Now if they would go back to the 4 inch size phone I'd be in heaven
I really, really, really like this and definitely will get one. If only they had ran with the same philosophy for the MBA, just retina the screen and 8th gen the cpu keeping other things ( that keyboard ) the same with the old price point, they could have sold it EXTREMELY well - no apologies necessary.
Apple infuriates me some times. They finally gave the Air a retina screen like everybody wanted but at the same time halved the number of ports. Two usb-c ports just isn’t enough.
Thank you for being one of the very few to finally state a downside of super small bezels. I had an iPad Pro, and it never felt comfortable to hold because there was nowhere to hold onto. Some people really go overboard with hating on larger bezels.
Thanks for the great review. I’m a total iPad mini fan, and am happy they’re still improving it. Two questions: Are the speakers the same, or a bit better than the 4? Is the weight the same? A comment about typing...I use my Bluetooth keyboard with my 4 every day and find it easy to touch type on.
I use a bluetooth keyboard with my mini 2 and find it fairly easy to use as well after getting used to it. I'm planning on now getting the new iPad mini and the pencil for taking notes but my bluetooth keyboard served me well for that purpose for years.

You were right, I bought the ipad mini 5 yesterday and its much easier to carry and take notes, I never used my Ipad pro 10.5 for same thing as too big and heavy

I don’t.. Like Lisa, I want to have something to hold the mini comfortably with my thumb in landscape mode... Palm rejection does not work at all outside the home screen. As for the vertical bezels they are already as thin as the pro and in portrait mode it’s not an issue

Hi Lisa, great review I just got my iPad mini 5 today and I’m honestly loving it. I got the gold only because it’s more rose gold then the old Champagne gold color we use to have to look at. But I never got that gold I always got the silver, but this time around I got the gold, I’m very happy with it hehe 🙃😊📱💻🖥⌚️😁
My Mini 2 (yipe) just bit the dust. What I use a mini for is reading books and playing games. While my phone is okay for video, it's too small for any books with illustrations. The Mini 5 looks like the perfect replacement for my 2.
I loved my mini4 and I am glad Apple are continuing to refresh it. This time I decided to update to the iPad Air 3 simply because my eyesight isn't so great anymore. Both mini and Air are great iPad's.
Lisa, can you talk about your photo processing? That wall behind you looks so nice, I’d like to know about picture taking to photo mountings and hangings? Your the best. Mike I have the mini 4, have always loved it great for traveling, and waiting rooms. Now to the 5.
I find it actually better to have a low-quality flat camera than have a protruding high-quality camera. Most people don't use back camera to take serious pictures on a tablet anyway, and protruding camera is just annoying for a device that is often used being laid on a surface.
I'm still on the mini 2 and was literally just about to give in and get something else when this came out. I'm excited to now get the new mini but I agree that they waited too long between releases, 3 1/2 years is crazy!
I was still using the mini 2, waiting for the mini 5. Then the mini 5 came and it’s so expensive! So I bought an iPad 2018 recently, wifi 128 gb. Now the mini feels tiny and light and the 2018 is so big and heavy (partly because the case I bought is rather heavy and thick). I’m kind of thinking a size somewhere in between the two would be perfect. My mini 2 has become a bit too slow for browsing, but it was especially the 16 gb that made its use limited. It’s still great for youtube/netflix though.
My 2018 iPad never leaves my much padded living room so I don't use any case. As soon as I started web surfing I was glad I got the bigger model. The only drawback for me is typing in portrait mode is a bit harder.
howyoudurrinhunneh What iLumine means is: on the keyboard, hold the keyboard button in the bottom right and choose ‘split’ or whatever it says in English or your language. It could be handy in certain situations, but it seems you can’t have the split keyboard on the bottom.
Nice! If you already have a workhorse in a laptop and your iPhone, this is the perfect portable multi-media device if you just want something one-hand size but bigger than your phone to read on. May just may even take place of my journal...
With phones getting bigger every year I personally find a mini tablet redundant. I use a tablet primarily for media consumption and just recently began using it for note taking so wouldnt go smaller than 10 inches.

iPad Mini's are great for taking travelling. I use my iPad Mini 2 all the time for this. Hope they keep the Mini line going for a long time to come.

The lack of four speakers like iPad Pro is a big let down for such a convenient media consumption device.

I agree, win-win and there is a silent minority that are less concerned about the aesthetics of bezels and more interested in usability, the iPad Mini remains the best tablet for this.
The 64gb storage and associated costs is worth the criticism. I honestly think it's quite mean.. games are a lot bigger, media is higher definition, 128gb should be the base capacity as Lisa alludes. Other than that, it's pretty good value where Apple's concerned
Sean yes, I suppose from a youth POV it will be different from my own generation, 40-60’s. The 64gb is a sweet spot for me. I have never surpassed this, usually around 30gb free. My older ipads of 32gb do have issues, but I doubt I will need more than 64gb on an iPad as I do not play games or take videos with it. I cannot see any usage that would push me even close. My demographic would probably majority agree.
Obviously for the teen market the variables are different. If they released with 128gb standard, knowing Apple there would be a $75 price hike, but I agree if Apple gave something for nothing then 128gb would help some and I would not complain, though I suspect it will be just overkill for me.

I agree I bought a 9.7 and disliked it because I do everything on my phone and I found myself moving my hands around to much and typing was difficult for me. So I returned it for the mini and I love it so much! Lightweight small but yet bigger than my phone and the bezels are actually good. They give me a place to hold the thing. Does anyone recommend a screen protector? Please help thanks

I have a second gen 12.9 and it’s my baby but like you said it stays home. I use everyday almost all day but when I leave the house it doesn’t. I want the mini 5 to be mainly my portable library I really do mean I’m buying it mainly to read books, however I’ve been waiting for pencil support to grab a mini because it will be the device I take with me. So even though it’s primary use will be housing and displaying e-books I’ll be able to use it for other things when I’m out and about. The size is perfect for fitting into any of my bags, and for my uses the mini 5 is absolutely perfect.
Watching this on my mini 4 just like i do all your vids, I wont upgrade but I’m just glad this form factor is here to stay for the time being!

Bought a dji Mavic 2 Pro drone a couple weeks ago and wanted something better than an old Note 4 paired to the controller. Picked up a MiniPad5 256k/Cell and am really impressed with the package. All the tablet functions are cream on top of the perfect size and bezels for mounting in the drone controller. Glad I waited before buying an older MiniPad. Cost vs utility to that of the dji smart controller or crystal sky makes the MiniPad5 a bargain for me. Also bought the Pencil which includes a USB Lightning to standard USB charging cable adapter. No need to ever plug the Pencil into the iPad's posterior after the initial pairing. Funny that the salesman said this could not be done when I asked.

I love the mini for portability, I still wish they made it more like the 10.5 iPad Pro, but I'm glad they did listen to those of us who want small equipment. Now if they would go back to the 4 inch size phone I'd be in heaven

I really, really, really like this and definitely will get one. If only they had ran with the same philosophy for the MBA, just retina the screen and 8th gen the cpu keeping other things ( that keyboard ) the same with the old price point, they could have sold it EXTREMELY well - no apologies necessary.
It'll still sell extremely well. Just not to poor or cheap people.
Apple infuriates me some times. They finally gave the Air a retina screen like everybody wanted but at the same time halved the number of ports. Two usb-c ports just isn’t enough.

Thank you for being one of the very few to finally state a downside of super small bezels. I had an iPad Pro, and it never felt comfortable to hold because there was nowhere to hold onto. Some people really go overboard with hating on larger bezels.

A comment about typing...I use my Bluetooth keyboard with my 4 every day and find it easy to touch type on.
I use a bluetooth keyboard with my mini 2 and find it fairly easy to use as well after getting used to it. I'm planning on now getting the new iPad mini and the pencil for taking notes but my bluetooth keyboard served me well for that purpose for years.

You were right, I bought the ipad mini 5 yesterday and its much easier to carry and take notes, I never used my Ipad pro 10.5 for same thing as too big and heavy

7-8 inch tablets are the perfect size. Able to hold it in one hand, portable, and bigger than even the biggest phone.

I didn’t think I would like it as I traded in my 6th generation 128 gig IPad, and somehow thought this mini screen was bigger. But, it’s a powerful gadget! Do u think it’s worth y trade? Good video as always Lisa. Apple start to make a lot of people mad about their storage now to make more money. Why not make 128GB and charge $50 instead of making 256GB for $150?

I don’t.. Like Lisa, I want to have something to hold the mini comfortably with my thumb in landscape mode... Palm rejection does not work at all outside the home screen. As for the vertical bezels they are already as thin as the pro and in portrait mode it’s not an issue

The bezels are perfect for holding the device. Especially if you draw. I don't need my hand activating the screen because it's edge to edge.

But I never got that gold I always got the silver, but this time around I got the gold, I’m very happy with it hehe 🙃😊📱💻🖥⌚️😁
My Mini 2 (yipe) just bit the dust. What I use a mini for is reading books and playing games. While my phone is okay for video, it's too small for any books with illustrations. The Mini 5 looks like the perfect replacement for my 2.
I’ve always liked the form factor of the mini. I’m spoiled now to the 12.9 Pro performance, but plan to grab one of these for a lot of use

I find it actually better to have a low-quality flat camera than have a protruding high-quality camera. Most people don't use back camera to take serious pictures on a tablet anyway, and protruding camera is just annoying for a device that is often used being laid on a surface.

2018 iPad on BLACK Friday for $250 was much needed as I was still on the mini 2 and I'm set for a few more years.
I'm still on the mini 2 and was literally just about to give in and get something else when this came out. I'm excited to now get the new mini but I agree that they waited too long between releases, 3 1/2 years is crazy!
I was still using the mini 2, waiting for the mini 5. Then the mini 5 came and it’s so expensive! So I bought an iPad 2018 recently, wifi 128 gb. Now the mini feels tiny and light and the 2018 is so big and heavy (partly because the case I bought is rather heavy and thick). I’m kind of thinking a size somewhere in between the two would be perfect.
My mini 2 has become a bit too slow for browsing, but it was especially the 16 gb that made its use limited. It’s still great for youtube/netflix though.
My 2018 iPad never leaves my much padded living room so I don't use any case. As soon as I started web surfing I was glad I got the bigger model.
The only drawback for me is typing in portrait mode is a bit harder.

What iLumine means is: on the keyboard, hold the keyboard button in the bottom right and choose ‘split’ or whatever it says in English or your language. It could be handy in certain situations, but it seems you can’t have the split keyboard on the bottom.
I still have a 16GB iPad Mini 2 and it’s more than enough storage as I only use it to read eBooks and surf the web.
Nice! If you already have a workhorse in a laptop and your iPhone, this is the perfect portable multi-media device if you just want something one-hand size but bigger than your phone to read on. May just may even take place of my journal...
With phones getting bigger every year I personally find a mini tablet redundant. I use a tablet primarily for media consumption and just recently began using it for note taking so wouldnt go smaller than 10 inches.
