Sold my 4 and bought the 5. No regrets. Instantly noticed the speed difference and I had that original 16gb so the storage increase is great too. Worth the upgrade in my opinion.
iPad mini 4 has better build quality. The iPad mini 5 front glass bends and wobbles effectively and it's easy to touch the LCD like iPad Pro 2018. It also sounds very hollow, so the gap between the LCD and the glass is thicker or the glass has gotten thinner. It's so bad that it feels like a Android tablet so get a tough ass screen protector.
My iPad mini 4 was getting very slow so I bought an iPad Mini 5 today, even though I have an iPad Pro 2. The iPad Mini is great for viewing textbooks when I’m using my iPad Pro for note taking at university and its also much more portable so it’s easier to carry around (I can fit it in most of my jacket pockets).
Almost thought about saving $100 on the 4 but I'll definitely get the 5. Might as well with that much better performance and also leaving the pencil open as an option.
I work at a retail store that sells them. Gen 4 if you don't need pencil and the speed is sufficient for your needs. I use my iPad for basic casual games and for my drone. Works great for that. Currently, while supplies last Gen 4 has 128Gb and goes for $400 and probably less if you look for sales. Gen 5 is great for pencil, processor, and other enhancements but only starts at 64Gb. If you want more memory, it jumps to 256G ($550). At that price point get the new iPad Air ($500/64G) or ($650/256G). Why they no longer offer a 128Gb version is beyond me. Please understand that the OS uses about 13Gb of that storage leaving you with only 3/4's of your memory for apps, pics, vids, etc. if you only get 64Gb.
Actually you can’t use an older Smart Cover perfectly fine. The magnets got repositioned. It now really wobbles around. But you can use a First or second gen Smart Case with it just fine. Even the microphone matches completely.
JustAnormalUser I ordered a lightweight cover from Amazon for £14. Slips into the clear back cover and has a front flip style cover that works to put the pad to sleep.
Nice video, one thing I dont understand us how your saying the ipad mimi 4 stutters. I have both the mini 4 and 5 and even though I notice the speed improvements on the mini 5 the mini 4 still isnt a slouch. Id be just as happy using the mini 4 if I couldn’t afford the 5th gen mini.

I have the two and it’s what I’m typing it on and for now it is still getting proper updates, it isn’t that slow, the display is 1080p, and it works perfectly. I have had it for 6 years so I’m hoping to get a new one for my birthday though

My iPad Mini 4 was stolen so I went to the Apple Store to buy another one when the saleslady told me that it’s iPad Mini 5 they are now selling I was excited thinking so much about it’s new capabilities and of course the specs.did not disappoint me however the design did quite it’s really almost identical to the iPad Mini 4 especially the “SCREEN” I was expecting to be like a screen in iPhone 10 and up (the entire front portion is covered with an operating screen) but still I’m happy with my new iPad Mini 5 and I thank God for having it. Great job as usual Apple. But iPad Mini 4 is still doing great. 👍🏻

I have an iPad Mini 2, 32gb, haha! yes a iP M 2 that I use as my head unit (see my vid if interested) and it still works great, yes it's a little laggy at times but it still works great for navigation and playing music from my Apple Music account. I Jailbroke it back in the day to get some cool OEM like features like the iPad turns on and off automatically when I start and turn off my truck. It has been by far the most practical and useful mod I have ever done on any vehicle, not to mention the cool factor since my truck did not come with a screen in the dash from the factory.
How could someone with so many technical specs totally MISS the most BASIC (not to mention VISIBLE) hardware fact that both iPad minis have TWO microphone holes (not one) and BOTH were relocated on the 5th gen? I literally searched for video comparisons *specifically* for that information, yet you missed that one completely. Bravo.

I got the mini 4 128gb brand new on 2018 Black Friday deals for $250 at BestBuy and it is a great little ipad. I just ordered the mini 5 wifi+Cellular 128GB for $400 deal at Apple website. I actually like the design of the Ipad mini, you have enough space to hold it when watching videos/movies. Bezeless displays look beautiful but they are annoying af.
There are definetly MORE Design changes beside the microphone. Camera and volume buttons moved too. So the old cases wont work! I have it right in front of me. The Mini 4 Apple Silicone Case fits, but half the camera lens is covered and the + Volume Button stucks. Maybe some cases will fit. But not the Apples and Logitech ones.
xAmazingMusicx The volume control on the mini 5 has been moved about 1/16 of an inch to the left which interferes with volume up opening on my logi key pad - which was designed for the Mini 4. So I filed the opening a bit larger - problem solved.
@@ericww32 no your thumbs wouldn't cover the screen up because the screen size increase thus it wouldn't make a big difference and it is your thumbs on the screen unless your thumbs are huge it like holding a phone
Thanks for the excellent review. I really enjoy your channel. I for one, am glad that this iPad mini is physically nearly identical to the mini 4. I purchased the 256gb version immediately when it came out and am very impressed with its performance. I also have a 2017 iPad pro 9.7, and I have found that I enjoy using my mini more, to the point that I’ll probably sell my iPad pro 9.7.
I too have both but I love both and will be keeping both. The larger screen is nicer for videos and the speakers are amazing. Also the 9.7 is still very fast, but I know that in the future if I update it it will get slower or I’ll have to leave it on ios 12 and miss new features (will probably choose the second option). By the way the 9.7 is from 2016 ;-)

The large variety of productivity/entertainment uses for the Mini demonstrates how versatile it can be for so many people. Master of Nun - But Good at a lot of stuff - Fine by me!!! I bought an iPad Mini 2 Cellular 10 years ago. I do not browse with it - I'm an adult - so I use my 14" laptop to browse and an Apple TV for viewing. After 10 years of ownership - I use my Mini almost exclusively when I "TRAVEL" - to do the following (otherwise it sits in a drawer) #1- as a GPS unit in my vehicles - the best GPS ever (70%) That's after over 150K miles of road trips - when I need a GPS around town - my iPhone works fine. #2 - as a Sidecar or mirror screen to view video paired with a M2 MBA (25%) #3 - as an eReader (4%) #4 - the odd miscellaneous task (1%) This might change with the pencil. I will likely buy the new Mini 7 when it comes out @ year end. The Mini is simply a great portable high performance device that sits between an iPhone & MBA M2 as a complimentary but not essential device.
Do you guys recommend changing the mini 4 to a 5? Is it worth it? I am in med school and would like to have an Apple Pencil on my iPad mini which I carry on my lab coat. That’s the only reason I have an apple mini. Thank you for the suggestions.
Off top, I think it speaks greatness to how good the ipad mini 4 must be for Apple to take 4 years before creating a newer one. They couldn't come up with anything substantial enough to justify the price or upgrade with minor tweaks over the course of 4 years. Wow !
iPad mini 5 has different camera placement! Mic is no problem for me, but the camera is different too... (so the old Silicone case will cover part of the camera) ... And there is no case that fits iPad mini 5 back with Smart Cover compatibility (for now).
Which is at least twice as expensive and less portable. Okay, it's also better, but if you only need / want a small tablet upgrading from Mini 4 to 5 is actually a good option.
I suppose with the mini 5 using the old design it allows people who like bezels to have a powerful tablet before they change the model up for everyone else. I guess the mini 6 will come with an updated design.

@@Pengkashi It makes literally zero sense to buy the 4 , as it is already near the end of support in the next two years . The 5 is also really not much more expensive. The a8chip in the 4 was used in the iphone 6 if that gives you a idea of the age .
I will accept the downsides in the mini to get the form factor...I have 12.9 iPad Pro, and I just won’t toss it in a bag and run around. The mini, I will. More useable on a daily basis.

The screen can tell where your hand are located so you won’t have accidental presses

today i bought a mini 4 for 270 dollars. Its a lot a tech for this price point.
I know the bezels may be a bit larger than they really should be, but cmon even for a 7 year old design it's still pretty damn beautiful.

Off top, I think it speaks greatness to how good the ipad mini 4 must be for Apple to take 4 years before creating a newer one. They couldn't come up with anything substantial enough to justify the price or upgrade with minor tweaks over the course of 4 years. Wow !

iPad mini 5 has different camera placement! Mic is no problem for me, but the camera is different too... (so the old Silicone case will cover part of the camera) ... And there is no case that fits iPad mini 5 back with Smart Cover compatibility (for now).

Not worth upgrading from 4 to 5, imo. Go for the 11-inch iPad Pro instead.
Which is at least twice as expensive and less portable. Okay, it's also better, but if you only need / want a small tablet upgrading from Mini 4 to 5 is actually a good option.

I suppose with the mini 5 using the old design it allows people who like bezels to have a powerful tablet before they change the model up for everyone else. I guess the mini 6 will come with an updated design.

@@Pengkashi It makes literally zero sense to buy the 4 , as it is already near the end of support in the next two years . The 5 is also really not much more expensive. The a8chip in the 4 was used in the iphone 6 if that gives you a idea of the age .
I will accept the downsides in the mini to get the form factor...I have 12.9 iPad Pro, and I just won’t toss it in a bag and run around. The mini, I will. More useable on a daily basis.

Air 1 is now unsupported by iOS updates, the mini is gonna get the new design of the air and pro this year
