Solomon, Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, Gandalf: All fictional! With David Fitzgerald

  • After years of research, David Fitzgerald has come to a surprising conclusion: that all the main characters in the world’s major religions are entirely the product of human imagination. While many have long doubted the supernatural feats that religious figures are purported to have done, the assumption that these are grounded in at least a kernel of historical fact is widely held. David explains how the stories we are familiar with today accreted over time, and the utter lack of evidence that any of the major figures of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Jainism, or Buddhism ever actually existed.

    Glad to see that David didn't blaspheme the real creators of the universe: Black and Decker, who made the world at 9.25am on September 9th, 1910.

    • @AlgyPug
      @AlgyPug 6 дней назад

      Late in the afternoon on September 8th, 1910, Black said to Decker: "I really like your idea of a machine shop. But how are we going to sell all the products that we make? Who is going to buy them?"
      Decker replied: " Let's create a universe and populate it with millions of customers made in our image."
      After a pause Black said: "I have considered your idea and found it good. Let's do it. See you at the shop tomorrow."
      And so it was done.
      But a few days day the first heresy arose.
      A member of the Southern Baptist Convention who took a dislike to Black because he could never beat him in a golf game, said: "A young earth? Ridiculous! The unverse is really old - at least 6000 years."
      "if Back and Decker did not create the world , then who did?" asked a member of the congregation.
      "God."
      "Who is God? And where does he live?"
      "He's omipotent, omniscient and onmipresent. And he lives in suburb where they don't let in people like you. Not unless you have the password."
      "What's the password?"
      "That information is only availble for premium subscribers."
      "How do I become a premium subscriber?"
      "Tithing - maximum rate. And you couldn't afford it."

    You want to understand older religions? Study newer religions and recognize the techniques used to protect the religion from critical questions. Look at Mormonism and Scientology and the lengths they will go to protect their religions.
    Almost forgot the most recent religion.. Trump and his followers. Just count the number of lies and the number of times members just ignore the facts to keep their faith strong.

  • @GilesMcRiker
    @GilesMcRiker 3 месяца назад +1

    @17:13 he avoids answering the question why the consensus among critical scholars is that Jesus was a historical person, and instead pivots by explaining that scholars concede that many elements of the gospels are mythical, an obvious point which only further begs the question as to why they nonetheless considered Jesus to be to be a historical character of which certain facts can generally be agreed upon (e.g was the Galilean Jew born in the first century, had a following, was crucified etc)

    •  6 дней назад

      he didn't avoid the question. He said that critical scholars don't agree on what "historical jesus" means, which is correct. He also pointed out that jewish scholars dispute the NT account of the crucifixion. The only thing YOU said that most critical scholars would agree with is that he was crucified, but the details of that are widely disputed.

  • @TheMahayanist

    I agree that Jesus almost certainly didn't exist. But can't agree at all about Muhammad or the Buddha. Not to make the argument from consensus, but the consensus is that the Buddha existed and the EBTs (Nikayas/Agamas) go back to his era and there's strong arguments for that in scholarship e.g., Alexander Wynne, Johannes Bronkhorst, Richard Gombrich. Im not going to lay it all out but virtually all Buddhist sects share the EBTs in common, which is unlikely if they originated independently and not derived from the early Buddhist communities, as well as chronology and composition of the text and Pali grammar seem to make it clear this is oral tradition and composed at a particular time period (around the time of the Buddha)
    Also, Muhammad probably existed. It's hard to explain the betrayal of Ali and Muhammad's family at Saqifah by Abu Bakr and Umar if Muhammad never existed.
    No horse in this race btw, as a Buddhist it would be better for Buddhism if the Buddha was simply a myth. But that's not what the evidence shows. Also, I'm just as anti Islam as I am anti Christianity. It would be great if Muhammad didn't exist, but it's not explaining the data to claim that. We have Armenian, Syriac, Greek sources about Muhammad too.

      How does one "believe what they want"? I can only believe in what convinces me, that something that happens to me, not something I control. The evidence is either convincing or it's not. If I were to act like I believed something that I didn't actually think was true, I would be pretending, or doing make believe.
      Also, not believing there is a god isn't the same as believing there is no god. Think of it like a courtroom, and we're trying to convict god of being guilty of existing. We're supposed to presume innocence until proven guilty by a preponderance of evidence. Once there is sufficient evidence for there being as god, I'll believe such a being is guilty of the 'crime' of existing. It would be the same for trying to prove gods don't exist, you would need to demonstrate that claim as well.
      I don't know if any gods exist, so I don't believe any do. Why would I believe something I can't know anything about? Why should anyone else believe in things they can't demonstrate? Why should we let people make believe?
