Great to see you covering Cilla Black, Sue .. She was one of a fantastic group of British female pop singers of the 60s, along with Petula Clarke, Dusty Springfield, Sandie Shaw, and Lulu, all of whom had many big hits, and they would all be worth reacting to .. Cilla had a big voice and really knew how to put over a song .. I strongly recommend her "Anyone Who Had A Heart" and "It's For You".

This is a very old video, which I have never seen before, but it’s definitely an early recording of her singing as you can see how shy she is and she would’ve had Bobby standing not far from her as she always liked Bobby to be beside her in her early days. absolutely love her. If it wasn’t for John Lennon and the Beatles encouraging her to get up on stage at the Cavern she would not have been spotted by her manager, Brian. I love everything there is about here..

The Beatles did write a couple of songs specifically for Cilla Black, and they're definitely worth a listen. The song "It's For You" is a great early Cilla track, and was a UK Top Ten hit in 1964. Btw, the original acetate demo featuring Paul McCartney's voice was discovered in 2016!
The song "Step Inside Love" became a signature Cilla Black song, and was written by Paul in 1967 as a theme for her TV series "Cilla", which first aired in 1968. 😊

Cilla was a hat check girl at the Iron Door Club on Temple Street before she later moved to the nearby Cavern Club. It was at the Iron Door that she first met the Beatles and where she first sang on stage backed by the Big Three. The Iron door was where the Beatles first played under that name and was the original home of Merseybeat, hosting all the groups while the Cavern was still a jazz club. Only after it saw what was happening at the Iron Door did the Cavern turn to rock. The Cavern has reaped all the fame whilst the Iron Door is virtually unknown.

Cilla was the biggest female UK recording artist of the 60's with 2 number 1 songs and countless top ten hits. She went on to be a huge TV star and presenter. She was signed by the same man who signed the Beatles after hearing her at the Caven Club. She was friends with the Beatles before they hit the big time and remaind so afterwards. She was a regular guest on their TV speacial which brought her huge fame. Before they were signed the Beatles found themsleves without a drummer and it was Cilla who suggested they give Ringo a chance, The rest is history. You're My World" is a cover of Italian ballad originally recorded in 1963 as "Il mio mondo" ("My World") by Umberto Bindi who co-wrote the original version with Gino Paoli.

Cilla Black WAS a rock singer, just like the Beatles (who played for her when she auditioned for Brian Epstein). However, being a girl singer in the early 1960s meant that female rock singers did not yet exist (that came about a decade later). So Cilla Black had to conform to the era she was in. Read a comment below from winny, as much as I see where your coming from I don't believe it's totally fair. Cilla was working class but made good (many have done the same) Cilla never forgot her upbringing but lived a life of a wealthy woman and did not hide that. She remained in the UK living throughout the very high taxes of the 1970s. Had she been a Labour voter, she would have been labelled a 'Champaigne Socialist'. So she would not have won with that.

My pop listening is basically from the late 50's. You have many, many treats in store. As the UK charts had the best of UK and American artists (+ Eurovision artists of course) my recommendation is to listen to the many collections of top 20 UK artists (possibly by year) on such as Spotify. Listen for pleasure (it will be😊) then choose a different hit by someone who impressed you to react to. I am glad you are exporing music from the past, it would be a shame if such great recordings did not get many new listeners.

@@playitagainsuefurther to my suggestion: try playing the first few seconds of each song until you hit one that really stands out. 2 or 3 decades of top 20 songs is a collosal number to get through😊

Good to see you are listening to this gem of a singer. Her 3 favourite songs of mine are "Surround yourself with sorrow" "Conversation" and "Step inside love" Listen to the original studio version sounds much much better not muffled and very much clearer. This is a horrible version of this very muffled recording. I don't think live versions sound the best.

Dionne Warwick' accused Cilla of stealing her songs. Both Warwick and Black legally sang many of the same copyrighted Burt Bacharach songs. Warwick, who was married to Bacharach for a time, recorded them all first. Cilla so copied Warwick's style it's almost impossible to tell which of the two singers it is on a recording. This cost Warwick a lot of sales and income in the UK market and led to long feud. Mostly from Warwick..

There's another black & white video on here of Cilla Black singing this same song only much better. More stronger and powerful sounding. It's dated May 1, 1964. And I like that one much better than this one. She also sounds more like a black woman in the other one. Best singer.

You''ve got a rather muffled recording, with dull instrumentation too. There are better ones. Those violin stabs …
Cilla (real name Priscilla white!) is one of those whose first name suffices. She eventually had her own TV show for I think decades on British TV.

Fantastic song. I have mixed feelings because of her politics. A true working class Liverpudlian who sold her soul on the alter of Maggy Thatcher. Usual story, poor girl gets rich - and no longer wants to pay her fair share of taxes. Her demise is just as sad. All alone in her Spanish Villa. Apologies for turning the mood sour - she was no 'working class hero' as John would later say.
