In the 1980s, Cilla became the host of the hit dating show BLIND DATE in the UK. Her special mix of authenticity, quick wit and gossipy banter made her everyone's favourite TV "Auntie" at the time and one of the highest paid entertainers working in British television 💐

She was a Rock n Roll girl and would get up a do a number or two with the various bands that were on. When Brian Epstein became her manager, he and George Martin the recording manager, turned her into a big ballad singer, although she hated it but, she had a powerful set of pipes and they thought she'd be more successful doing ballads. "You're My World" was another hit of hers from the same year.

The song was written by Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics) for Dionne Warwick in 1963. Warwick's original recording hit the Top Ten in the United States. Black's single in the UK went number one hit 1964. Petula Clark also recorded the song for the international market in several foreign languages.

Cilla Black hosted her own BBC variety show, Cilla (1968-1976).she became a prominent television presenter in the 1980s and 1990s, hosting hit entertainment shows such as Blind Date (1985-2003), Surprise Surprise (1984-2001) and The Moment of Truth (1998-2001).
Black died on 1 August 2015 at the age of 72, after a fall in her holiday villa in Estepona, a town in Spain. The day after her funeral, the compilation album The Very Best of Cilla Black (2013) went to number one on the UK Albums Chart and the New Zealand Albums Chart; it was her first number one album. In 2017, a statue of Black commissioned by her sons was unveiled outside the Cavern Club's original entrance.

Cilla in her prime. People forget what a great voice she had. George Martin (Beatles producer) was her producer 1st. Fantastic contrast in between the power and subtlety with this track and a great melody as well.

Great voice but unfortunately not entirely her own voice. George Martin didn't like the Liverpudian accent that came through when she first sang for him and made her drop her natural sounding voice. So, we never heard the real Cilla.

Cilla was the biggest selling female artist of the sixties. This was one of 2 number one singles and she had about 20 top 20 hits. The Beatles wrote songs for her. It was Cilla who suggested that the Beatles give Ringo a shot when they found themselves without a drummer shortly before they were discovered and lauched into superstardom.

It is a tragedy for the USA that she never really made in big here. Great voice and great personality, she became extremely big in the UK etc. Had her own variety show, game shows, etc. The Brits loved her as one of their own relatives. They did a great movie on her some 10 years ago, it's somewhere on youtube. From Liverpool, was pals with the Beatles early on before they made it big. ..she was the "coat check" girl at the Cavern Club and would be asked to sing with bands, especially the Beatles and a few others. She was actually friends with Ringo Starr before he joined the Beatles. The Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, at John Lennon's suggestion, became her manager also. The biographical movie about her was high level great!! A must watch!

The song is a Burt Bacharach and Hal David tune. The duo penned some great pop tunes in the 60’s. Dionne Warwick did a much better job with this song than Cilla (my opinion) when she sang it in the 60’s (not 70’s as someone mentioned earlier).

Cilla Black is only NOW getting the recognition she deserves as a singer. She was a singer´s singer. Unfortunately, with a voice like that, she was "encouraged" to sing pop music. It did not do well for her career. Her nose job ended her singing career. She never sounded as good after that.

  • @sharonsnail2954
    @sharonsnail2954 3 месяца назад

Is Dionne's version better than Cilla's or vice versa? To me Dionne's softer voice leads to a more passive acceptance of the situation. Whereas Cilla's harsher tones makes the lyrics much more assertive and strident. Either way Bacharach and David have two superb renditions of their classic song. BTW I have both versions in my collection 😃
Dionne must have felt persecuted in the 1960s as every US hit she had seemed to be covered by either Cilla, Dusty Springfield or Sandie Shaw who went on to have the UK hit. It meant that only "Walk On By" made the UK top ten.

This is one of the best songs by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Cilla never had much of a career in the U.S. Bacharach and David's muse in the U.S. was Dionne Warwick who made so many of their songs famous, but Cilla had a wonderful voice too. Dusty Springfield did some of their songs beautifully too. MANY people have covered this song, but Dionne Warwick's versions are the most famous.

Beautiful song, though nothing tops the Dionne Warwick version. Not yet anyway. But when Lucy Thomas covers it....

Can you not hear the song then critique at the end rather than talking over the song while it’s playing , if you see who wrote the song it will give you a complete story.

We all loved Cilla because she could not sing at all.

Sorry , flat out, Dionne Warwick did it better, much better, this is a sad imitation. It was written for Warwick
and it was her intonations that gave the song its incredible feel. Warwick gave it soul and meaning, otherwise
    its just a song.
