She was Burt Bacharach's (the guy with the lovely voice) singing muse. She has the best phrasing of any singer I've ever heard. And singing all those amazing Bacharach and David songs makes for one of the greatest teams in popular music history
Ms. Warwick is music royalty! Extremely successful career! Her maternal aunt is Cissy Houston, making her cousins with the late Whitney Houston. Her sister Dee Dee also had a successful singing career. You can NEVER go wrong with reacting to a Dionne Warwick song! Burt Bacharach is also a fun rabbit hole of classic American pop songs!
"I Say a Little Prayer", "Walk On By", "That's What Friends Are For", "Don't Make Me Over", "You'll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart)", "I'll Never Fall in Love Again", and "Alfie": all of that in descending order from how high they hit the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
One of the greatest world voices ever. From her effortless smoothness through her vocal range, to her impeccable pitch, to her phenomenal phrasing, to her deceptive power, to her elegant stage presence. It just doesn't get better. Thanks so much for sharing. PS: The small mics and directional mics they used back then give even better quality than they do today.
Burt Bacharach gave the into. Some of the BEST pop songs of the 60’s were written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The best ones were sung by Dionne Warwick. You should check out Walk on By, I Say a Little Prayer (Aretha Franklin also covered it), I’ll Never Fall in Love Again….
One of my top five songs from the elegant Ms. Warwick. I had the pleasure seeing her in person in her first performance in NYC. She was shy and stationary, but that beautiful voice was loud and clear. Listen to my other favorites, "Walk On By", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", "I Say A Little Prayer", and "Walk On By". Also give "Don't Make Me Over" a listen.
i love dionne warwick. these are some of her greatest songs that you can react to later:- what the world needs now. don't make me over. alfie. that's what friends are for. walk on by. do you know the way to san hose. heart breaker. i say a little prayer. i'll never fall in love again. i'll never love this way again. whisper in the dark. all the love in the world. i just don't know what to do with myself. there's always something to remind me. a house is not a home.
Thanks for the list! I would start with some of her more lively or bigger hits, such as: Walk On By, Do You Know the Way to San Jose, I Say a Little Prayer, Always Something There to Remind Me, Heartbreaker, Don't Make Me Over.....
Dionne Warwick is one of America’s greatest female singers of the 20th Century. She has been active in the entertainment industry since 1955, according to Wikipedia. She had her greatest musical success during the 1960s and 1970s. Warwick has won six Grammy Awards, both as a solo artist, and in teamups with other music artists. She is a recipient of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and later this year, will be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Dionne Warwick will celebrate her 84th birthday in December.
This is my favorite song of hers... And "Don't Make Me Over." Also, I saw somewhere that Teyana Taylor was supposed to be starring as Ms. Dionne in a movie. Perfect casting.
She was the Best listened to her since I was 10 years old still love 💗 her and still listen every day 👍🙏💯😎Great Reaction The Mic is hung above her head sometimes you can see when they pan back 👍🙏💯
Dionne Warwick is one of the best singers of all time. She has a long list of hit songs that are still enjoyable today. Listen to the song Then Came You she did with the Spinners.
Speaking of "closed mouth" singers, I will add Roy Orbison and Tammy Wynette. They all got so much projection and volume despite vocalizing in a way people would be taught not to. Of the three, Warwick was definitely a trained singer and her technical skills was one of the reasons David/Bach sought her out to sing their rather complex songs.
I've always loved Dionne Warwick's songs and have several of her albums. She performed at my college during my freshman year in 66 and the show was wonderful. After the show a few of us were invited to meet her and she hDioe was so nice and friendly. Others have already recommended other songs by her. Looking forward to more Dionne Warwick❤
Can't ever, ever, go wrong with Dionne Warwick. My favourite 60s singer for sure (and among my top 10 all time) and she had hits and great songs through the 80s and beyond. Walk On By, A House Is Not A Home, Reach Out For Me, Alfie,....oh boy the list is long. Later songs...Deja Vu, That's What Friends Are For, Heartbreaker, Then Came You (with the Spinners). Her catalogue is deep...you won't regret diving in
Only Aretha Franklin had more charted hits. These songs were literally written for her, she sang some of the most difficult songs ever written for pop music. This is one of many songs Luther Vandross, who counted her as his musical inspiration, covered. She was first Black woman to win Grammy in pop music. She started in Gospel and later won Grammy in R&B too, 60+ year career. She is formally trained in music too with advanced degrees. American treasure (yes, Whitney H is her first cousin). She did some minor acting roles, but not actress, singer and activist.
Burt Bacharach was the guy speaking at the beginning. He composed the music to this song (and most of Dionne's songs of this era) which was a collaboration with his lyricist partner Hal David. This must have been on a non-American (British?) TV show. Burt was an American. The British singer you were referring to who also sang this song is Cilla Black.
This performance was from a 1964 or 1965 special on British TV featuring Burt Bacharach songs. There were many great tunes on this show, among them "Planes and Boats and Trains" in its original form. Her performance of this tune from a live performance in Belgium at a restaurant/bar in Belgium is amazing. What a voice. The collaboration between Ms. Warwick and Messrs. Bacharach and David produced some of the most beautiful music ever recorded.
Britt you articulate very well ... Don't sell yourself short I love the way you express yourself and you are very astute and wonderful in the way you describe the people you listen to I love very much the way you express yourself and appreciate these artists❤!
Of course I pray for you ;-) - Dionne Warwicks albums (Walk On By / Greatest Hits) are for weeks the only thing I listen to walking over a mile to work (crossing Ku'damm in Berlin - a bit like 125th St. in NYC): Sometimes with odd 60's sound effects in the mastering; it's really a treat (before the daily BS is breaking loose). Listen to "Walk on by" - this is a song I always come back to (like a magic formula, like BeeGees "Nights on braodway" - I wait, even if it takes forever …). One more thing: Gil Scott Heron (known for political black jazz like "B-Movie") has a beautiful voice - look for something like "Winter in America" (will will see what I mean).
In a stage setting, tiny bindi microphones can be concealed in the hairline or cheek. These are almost invisible unless you know what to look for, and are near the front. In a TV studio, almost certainly miming.
Like a kite on a long string, her voice bobs and weaves, dives, and ascends with the ebb and flow of the wind. In my late 70's, I grew up with Dionne Warwick.
This song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It is one of many that Dionne recorded for Bacharach and David. Others include Walk On By, The Look of Love, Do You Know the Way to San Jose and I Say a Little Prayer, amongst many others. There was a string of hits, mostly in the 60s, but recently Bacharachs cool style has become popular again, and Dionne delivers it so well
I ❤ miss dionne. I grew up listening to her, as my mother always played her records, I have also seen her multiple times in concert, and she is a vocal icon
Britt, as many of your responders here have mentioned, Dionne has a number of of great songs besides this one, each with its own particular charm and beauty. One that has stayed in my heart since the early 60's is called "Trains and Boats and Planes." It first touched me when my girlfriend, who was a foreign-exchange student, said goodbye and returned to Europe. The song -and the memory of our love - has stayed with me forever. Such is Dionnes' magnitism. Give it a listen, and you'll see why.
Being British i had no idea that Dionne ever recorded this, but then we had Miss Cilla Black whose version is enshrined in music history in my home country.
All the Bacharach and David songs were written with Dionne in mind....she is one of a kind. My mam had an album and I loved it as a kid growing up in Ireland in the 80s
Warwick was Burt Bacharach's "muse" during the 1960s. She had the great good fortune of having an iconic songwriter (along with lyricist Hal David) giving her a steady stream of hit compositions. And Bacharach was producing and arranging for her.
This song is by Hal David (lyrics) and Burt Bacharach (music), especially for Dionne. They were the muses for each other and had so many hits back in the day. One of the many I loved was "A House is Not a Home," but especially the cover of it by Luther Vandross, sang in front of her at a tribute for her career.
Hi Brit, you've been reacting to music from my era and I love the stuff your doing with Dionne Warwick, Linda Ronstadt and Karen Carpenter - amazing voices. Speaking of old school, check out Putri Ariani doing a disco cover of Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive'.
I had a massive crush on her when I was a kid in middle school. She was the host of the TV show "Solid Gold". Would watch it just to see her. She is lip syncing which was common practice back then. That why I love and subscribe to Midnight Special.
About the production: it can go either way. Sometimes there was a boom mic, sometimes they lip synced. In the case of this song, she sang it note for note like the studio recording. Some performers could do that, others would throw in something a little extra. I think the young Dionne looks more like a younger Angela Basset with a smidge of Teyanna Taylor.

She was an actress in the 60's or early 70's. She played a nurse named JULIA and that might have been the name of the show. I had a Barbie doll of her when I was little. I loved her.
Generally there was a mic on a boom overhead to follow the singers around the stage. If she had been staying in one place then it might have been suspended from a wire. It was an old movie and then TV technique before they came out with wireless mics.
Teyana Taylor is going to play the part of Dionne Warwick in an upcoming film. It will be produced by Dionne Warwick's son. Dionne herself wanted Teyana Taylor for the project. They are not related.
She made this song famous only in the USA and Canada. Cilla Black made it famous in the UK and Western Europe. In fact Cilla's version was the all-time biggest hit by a female artist in the UK.
Carlos Santana on Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach: "But for those people who want to really begin to sing, I suggest getting a lot of Dionne Warwick albums-the old ones-and instead of playing the chords as much, or trumpet things, try to match her vocal note-for-note.

A man named Burt Bacharach wrote most of her songs. She was related to Whitney Huston, I think she was either a cousin or aunt to Whitney. As you listen you can hear a bit of Whitney in Dionne's voice, now that the world knew Whitney.
Ok Dionne is Legend! Her voice is immediately identifiable-so smooth and her tone so unique and quite hard to replicate. Btw, this is the least popular song of hers I’ve heard. She has quite a catalog (one was featured in My Best Friend’s Wedding). If you enjoy her you might like Karen Carpenter-who also had a distinct, smooth, smiling voice. Her life was cut short at the age of 32 from Anorexia Nervosa but she still had quite the catalog with her brother Richard. She also played the drums. They were known as the “squares” of the time. But her voice!! ❤
❤Her shirt is very tasteful. Dionne Warwick believes in being true to her elderly ladies voice by not pushing it as it's in very rusty shape today. Let's offer her praise that she can still sing and attract interest at 85! Beautiful effort ❤

I was able to see her live in '72. She was and still is incredibly talented. I love her voice.
Burt Bacharach and Hal David were songwriting pros, and in Dionne they had the perfect vocal muse!
Before streaming changed the game, Dionne Warwick may the charts more than any other woman, except Aretha Franklin.

Dionne is definitely one of the greats. NOT a screamer, smooth as silk.
Not a screamer but a great Belter and amazing vocalist, periodtt
