Cilla Black was a singer only. Daryl Braithwaite is a singer with a band backing him Sherbet. So both had to be heard on the video❤ I love both versions. Thank you for posting. 😊
My Mum always knew Cilla as a singer back in the 60s and then by the time myself and my siblings came along we grew up watching Cilla on the tv every wknd🤣😂rip Cilla That’s the first time I’ve ever heard Daryl Braithwaite’s version and I don’t wish to ever hear it again😔
The best male cover is by Tom Jones. Braithwaite is simply a competent singer of the kind you might find in a pub on a Friday night. There’s an awful lot of hiding in his version. Black mixed gentleness with explosive power and did it magnificently in a way very few singers can do. Black and Jones were dangerous singers operating at the edge of their abilities; any mistake would bring everything crashing down. The relative safety of Braithwaite’s version isn’t remotely comparable.
For me Cilla wins this one. I felt the music drowned Daryl's voice out in the chorus, seemed a bit too loud at times. Still good though, and really good his track is different from Cilla's version. I'd listen to both versions.
Hi @chatham43 ... The Aussie band uses the spelling without the second "r" thus both versions of the spelling is correct. Thus the appropriate pronunciation is "sherbut". We were brought up saying "sherbay" with the "t" silent. Must be a regional thing. Take care and keep rockin' ...
@@drivingwithtodd1781😮No... the band did not leave out the second "r" in the word Sherbert! Don't know where you got that idea? It was always "Sherbert", as in a fizzy sweet. In the 70's Australia, we could buy it in wax type bag with a tiny little plastic spoon, powdered fizzy Sherbert 😋. Same name, same spelling. Believe me as a teenage girl growing up in the 70's avidly watching & listening to our fave home grown bands🤗 that's not something I could possibly miss💁🏻♀️
I like both versions and Daryl does a good job with the song. Have you listened to Cilla singing "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and compared it with the Dione Warwick version?
Cilla delivers, but Daryls version seems very held back. I know he has a very different voice and obviously wanted to do a different version, but I find it's a song hard to take so differently. Saying that he did have a huge hit with it
Sherbet is pronounced ( share - bet). A lot of Cilla's songs were cover versions of Dionne Warwick recordings. I guess this would have prevented their rise into the USA top 100.
Daryl was very restrained in this. He’s such a powerful singer with a big range, disappointing in this song. You should listen to ‘Howzat’ with Sherbet (pronounced Sher-bet, not Sher-bay). Also Daryl’s definition of ‘Horses’.
daryl's version is ok ish but lacks the power....Cilla was made for that song she owned it but gotta say the production of Cilla's by Martin was exceptional...you won't beat orchestra , notice that many stars that do re records of their hits tend to use orchestras.
Good old Cilla. She had a great voice and was later a terrific tv celebrity.
love both, My older sister had the Cilla Black single, 15 year old me had the Daryl's, But, Cilla wins, she is one of the best female singers ever,

Both versions, Cilla's and Daryl's, reached #1 in the Australian charts 10 years apart, 1964 and 1974/5 respectively 😊🌟
An absolute masterpiece by Cilla.❤

There's only one winner here!😊
She was a liverpool girl that gave many a great deal of enjoyment xx
Viva los 60's y 70's!

Different as night and day. Darryl is singing the notes and words of the song, Cilla sung the heart and soul of the song.

Cilla's version is better.
it is a great song ,and melody i think daryl played on that ,as great songs dont come along that often.
No comparison. Cilla is unbeatable
..big fan of her sixties hits..she never put a foot wrong..then came the seventies. Btw is it Sherbert..not Sherbay?

You're right. It was sherbet. They had a hit over here in the UK.....Owzat!....that's a cricket term.😊

Subbed for our Cilla! ❤️
I like both versions and Daryl does a good job with the song.

Do you mean Anyone who add an art. I love that Cilla never lost her Scouse accent. 😊

Cilla is best

A better song by Darryl Braithwaite is Horses. In Australia, Sherbet is pronounced 'shur-bet'.

Cilla 100%
