The water you see on the top of the rock is not rain water.there are is still function water system to the top of the mountain and if you observe more closely you will find many more unbelievable facts and technoligies. Lots of ancient architecture to explore in Sri Lanka. Visit and you'll be truly amazed from even what you read on the superficial tourist pamphlets or what you see on the surface. To find the real stuff, you need to actually read a lot of sources. The surrounding ruins, the mote and the gardens with still functioning hydraulics are more impressive than the structures on the rock itself.

Drilling was not necessary to hold the foundation intact. Laying blocks of granite or bricks over the "small steps" is enough for laying the foundations on the rock surface.
Anyway, If they are to drill the rock, then how would have they done it? I mean the method and the materials used and how they've done it?? What is your idea? Just curious bro! 👍 Cheers!! 👍

Few corrections. Water in the pool is not rain water. Theres an ancient pumping system to the top but mechanism is still a mistry. And that rock is not for prisoners . Its for roll over the cliff when theres an enemy attack. King made this edifice to protect himself from his elder brothers attack.

    Hi Harald !!
With all due respect you are my favorite RUclipsr now a days. And I have watched all of your Srilankan adventure , I am still watching all your other videos as well. There are actually no words to describe how wonderful and well captured footage that you have put together to make all these Vlogs.
Sigiriya kingdom is my favorite place in srilanka, and will be forever the favorite place. It actually has more treasures places hidden in sigiriya kingdom which only most of the old locals knows as some of the old locals I know have been working in that place for preserve the sigiriya rock from being distorted, like 60 , 70 years back they were actually few of the guardian of the sigiriya rock. I met one person through one of my friend actually. He was about 70+ years old and a local. That person came with me when I said that I wanted to see the kingdom.
I was actually surprised !!! He took me to places where actually people has never been in years. Those places had many treasures stories behind which I learned from him as he explained to me each and every thing he knew about.
I wish I could describe all those to you. This is how sigiriya kingdom actually became my favorite place. Because it’s a historical miracle.
I took time to write this comment because when I saw this video I saw how excited were you to know about the past and about the hidden treasures places. Same as you I my self is a person who loves historical places which has treasures stories behind.
One day when you back in srilanka If you are Interested we will go on a mission in sigiriya rock and the pidurangala rock ( which king kashyapa hide his treasure ) as well and search for hidden places and learn all those stories behind them. Like I said to that the best person you should take is a local person who knows about the place. So then, stay safe for now. !!!
Keep uploading your wonderful documentaries. I have learnt soo much from them so far 😇

You can go for a good swim;) Also, for more ancient ruins with historic importance visit Anuradhapura. There you get to see a bunch of interesting historic treasures. It's totally worth it I tell you.

    1. The citadel on top of Sigiriya was built by King Kasyapa who ruled from 477 to 495 CE. He choose this as his royal residence as he was worried of potential attacks from his brother Moggallana, the rightful heir to the throne. From atop of Sigiriya he had unobstructed views of the surrounding area.
    2. The rock is 200 metres high and visitors can walk the 1,200 steps, divided amongst a number of staircases, to the top.
    3. King Kasyapa’s life and rule was full of controversy. He was born to a non-royal concubine and had no right to the throne. Consequently he rebelled against his king father Dhatusena, imprisoning him and eventually having him killed, entombing him in a wall.
    4. Prior to King Kasyapa using Sigiriya as his residence, it’s thought the rock was a Buddhist monastery. It was once again used as a monastery after Kasyapa’s death till it was abandoned in the 14th century.
    5. On a plateau halfway up the rock Kasyapa built a gateway in the form of a huge lion with a staircase emerging from the lion’s mouth, hence its name meaning Lion Rock.
    6. Considered one of the best examples of ancient urban planning, the site of Sigiriya became an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
    7. King Kasyapa created a ‘mirror wall’ so highly polished that he could see his reflection as he walked by. There is also evidence of a wall, 140 metres long and 40 metres high, covered with paintings of ladies. These paintings are still partly visible today. Visitors inscribed their thoughts of the painted women along the ‘mirror wall’. This graffiti is of great interest to historians, showing the development of the Sinhala language and script.
    8. The city includes water gardens, a moat, terraced gardens and archaeological features.
    9. It wasn’t until 1831 that the abandoned Sigiriya was discovered by British Army Major Jonathan Forbes. He came across the site whilst horseback riding through Sri Lanka. A few decades’ later archaeologists spent time on a research operation in the region.
    10. The advanced and impressive hydraulic system consisting of canals, lakes, dams, bridges, fountains and underground water pumps still provides water to the site’s gardens today.

The legend says that there were many treasure hunting expeditions to the ruins after that point by various British and then local "researchers". It is no wonder now only the stone pillars and foundations remain now.
