- ■ SRI LANKA, HIKKADUWA: New year's eve for Sri Lankans doesn't fall on December 31st, but April 14th. The occasion is marked by a family feast with some rather unique sweets that are prepared in the days before. Having gotten a thorough insight into what Sri Lankan villagers eat in the last 3 weeks of the year, I was eager to see what they cook up to mark the beginning of a new one.
More importantly I was eager to see if I could become a Sri Lankan Master chef. Needless to say things didn’t go according to plan....... 😆🤦🏼♂️
neighbors say that Freeman's new servant is quite good..
Haha progressive tree climber 😂
The most handsome 'servant' ever 😎👌🏼
😂😂😂
Indrani's handyman
Dnt need salary..only 'kasippu'..
This better than Harald real family I think this our srilanka people. Special thanks for this srilanka family for show our hospitality.
Wow, Sinhalese New Year's foods look yummy... Specially Kokiz.
Happy Sinhalese New Year to Sri Lanka greeting from the USA.
Harald, you've spent so much time with this family. I bet it's going to be very emotional when you have to tell them goodbye.
That's sri lanka
I am a German with Tamil Sri Lankan Roots and it sooooo awesome to see the love people spread!! And especially to see the Sinhalese Food and People!!
I really hope Tamil and Sinhalese will never have these sad times again.
Thanks for sharing these awesome moments from my beloved little Island ❤️❤️❤️
Bless you Heraldo Baldieri
Btw I never heard of Kasippu before 🤣 But maybe its the Sinhalese Word for „Kallu“
Shoutout to INDRANIs Kitchen 😁👍🏾
You are lucky to be with this family, Harald. They are lovely and friendly. I missed three consecutive Sinhala New Year festivals as I currently stay overseas. Your video remembers me the good times I stayed with my family back in Sri Lanka. Every food that they made symbolises the prosperity and new hopes as Sinhala Hindu New year festival is dedicated to being grateful to the sun, rain and entire nature which provide oxygen to breathe, soil to cultivate and land to live without any cost. The Sinhalese tradition is mostly based on agriculture; and thus, the new year falls in the harvesting time of the crops, which is April.
Feel the same...
Harald : What this is called?
Girl : Mung Kerali
Harald: The monk 😂
😂😂
Its so nice dialogue
🤣🤣
Haha......hey hardl please dont eat that monks
He's reminded us of our religion 😁🙈
I love how you are just chilling out and quarantining with this delightful family. I’m sure they appreciate the company, advertisement for their business & the any bit of extra income that they can come by due to this epidemic. Very progressive of you, Harald.
I admit srilanka is one of the safest countries to live during this pandemic. Harald is in safe hands❤❤
I visited Sri Lanka four years back. Wonderful memories of the country and her fantastic people. Really nice people.
Freeman has a wonderful family, they have adopted Harald as their son

Cheers for that family for preserving the Singhalese values for the New Year even in these difficult times. Good experience for Harald too.
Very welcoming to see daily videos from the great Harald!. Has your perspective on the global response to the virus changed? BTW your hosts seem like such a terrific Sri Lankan family, which is not surprising, I worked with three Sri Lankan men in the past( live in Toronto) really humble and nice people.
No! On the contrary...
Greetings from Australia. You my friend is in the safest country during Corona

It’s so cool you can spend the quarantine with this nice family. I am loving that sri lankan new series. I would love to live with them for a while if I come to Sri Lanka once
That last treat she made !! Wow !!! She is VERY VERY talented !!! I’m a great cook and don’t think I have the skills. It reminds me of that challenge of rubbing your belly and patting your head at the same time!!! Two hands moving in opposite ways!!!! Awesome video Harald ❤️
This is the exact type of thing I love to do when I travel. I like to stay in a country until I feel as if I am fitting into the culture. I learn so much about the people becoming close to them makes the adventure so much better. and I make friends that last a lifetime.
Good morning harald from Louisville, Ky thank you for uploading and still giving us content in these time's your awesome im glad i started watching you 2 year's ago your video's have taught me alot.
Harald's historical explanation is the best part of these videos, except for his love for Kasippu :D Enjoy your time in Sri Lanka Harald.. As we always say සුමිහිරි පානේ පදමට ගහලා හෙට මැරුනත් හිතට සැපයි අද ජොලි කරලා ❤️
Meanwhile Freeman’s still axing the woods
I love the little giggles when harald is trying to understand what their trying to explain to him.
Never did i thought that the great Norwegian viking would be one day, Sitting in a Lankan kitchen and helping an old grand ma by blowing the wood fire to cook the tasty savoury dish. :)
What a treat it is to look into the lives of this great family. Harald this is some of your most interesting content ever. Love the hospitality of this family.👍👌
What a humble and down to earth person.
Blow a kiss with kokkis ✌️
She is making Kavum even without a template. 🤭

1000+ years ago Sri Lankan's "Kokis"
Maybe lately it brought and became "Cookies" in Western
Top Notch content! What a wonderful insight into life with this cheerful family. They and you will remember this time always.
So Sri Lanka🇱🇰Wonder of Asia
Super cool! Here in Canada, my fathers side of the family had a tradition to make a VERY similar fried batter we call Rosettes. Exact same method of cooking, however they would be sprinkled with granulated sugar straight out of the oil, then allowed to dry.
Fascinating to see how traditions change through the world, yet how similar they really are.
They are very kind..Love the family❤
This honestly is a once in a lifetime experience for Mr Harald! you are documenting something that has been done in SriLankan houses for 100's for years. Good on you stay safe

I am Anglo Indian. My Grandma and Mum made these during the Christmas and New Year’s Season. They ere called Rose Cookies. They also made Kul Kuls rolled on a folk or clean new combs. They were made of flour, egg and sugar. Maybe they made these on Sri Lanka too. So happy to see you have met the perfect family during lockdown. You deserve the best. Stay safe. Take care. 💕

They r so nice people to accommodate you . And equally humble Harold . Humanity at best
Mom used to make rosettes around Christmas. I thought of them right away. We had a lot of Norwegian treats in our house.
In Mangalore, India we call it Kokkisan (or kokis), Rose cookies because of its rose-shape named in various regions, its quite common in christian houses from south part of india like kerala, karantaka, Chennai and even Mumbai and Goa and they are usually famous only during Christmas. I miss them so much and miss being back home in India. In Scandinavia (Swedish or Norwegian) its called Rosette cookies. However, her Kokis look great too. ve fun, mate.
You are definitely having a ball, having amazing Sri Lankan food with traditional culinary experience, definitely on my bucket list someday....
Thanking for sharing these details. I have noticed, we both(indian and sri lankan) have a culture and a traditional with some same features.
Visit Sri Lanka. You are welcome here 🙏

Great video Harald! I love your video's.
That exact first cookie is also made in Scandinavia, Germany, Sweden, etcetera. Referred to as rosettes. We had them dusted in powdered sugar.
Probably, they say the Dutch brought "Kokis" here in the 1700s and it stuck with the locals.
sheldon scribbles Very likely.
Or maybe it was taken from srilanka to europe🤔
1000+ years ago Sri Lankan's "Kokis"
