I would like to note that max DVD read is at 8x and max cd read is 24x. If you inserted a disc that burned at higher rates then it is uncompatible. That is one of the reasons why it is recommended to burn at slowest speeds. To give it best compatibility, highest quality burn, and supposedly more "disc life". Haven't check into that disc life statement yet but I guess it burns deeper and more define maybe due to disc corossion and what not. The point is always burn slow. Good things come to those who wait. In this case, CDs and DVDs lol
Well, I have old CDs and DVDs (10-20 years) and almost none of them are failing! Just store them in a cold place with no light and cover them around with stuff that won't allow air to get through and they'll be fine!
Question? Looks like you built your computer why not put in a dvd-rw drive? I bought this for my laptop only. When I built my computer (Windows) I would never buy this for my computer albeit it is a great drive for my laptop (Apple) you can get much faster for a desktop.
Hi I have mislaid the installing disc for my LG Slim Portable DVD Writer, so please tell me how to make it function to burn my CD's. Do I have to purchase a driver?
You will need to transfer USB movies into computer and use a DVD movie burning software such as Nero for an example. This will convert your video file type (mp4, mkv, etc.) into DVD format. The 2018 version I use have the ability to make Video CDs (VCD) if that's what you're really trying to do, but be aware the quality looks like when you're streaming video with your internet running slow. It's gonna be a lil blocky and they compare it video tape (VHS) quality. VCDs can only hold 1hr 20min of video so most likely your gonna have chop a movie in half and make a 2 disc set for movies since most are longer that 80mins. Most DVD players I come across can play VCDs but the Blu Ray players I did couldn't play. However, it was a fun project to experiment with. I usually burn my music videos into VCD for my car stereo since it has a small screen and can't tell much in video quality difference on it. CDs and DVDs are about the same price now so there's really no point to much really lol. But it's all preference and experiments. The video production game isn't as simple as I thought it will be. Been on it for several months now and gets more complex the more you try to make better DVDs with menus, special features, best format for storage, best method for compatibility, etc. It's a journey bro, but I learned because I enjoyed the art, to collect, and to finish a product you created to hold, watch, and enjoy. Makes a great cheap gift for holidays and the takes care of the Ol' "Don't go to someone's house empty handed". 😁
Hi, how can you ´force´ this to write CD´s/DVD´s at a 4x speed? Is it possible? I use Imageburn and it writes at 8x speed by default (even when I select lower speeds).
I have data on an old pc with Vista OS and newer pc is Win7. I know the 2 are compatible. But I'm wondering if the LG dvd writer has memory? so I can transfer data from the older pc to the newer one without burning it to a disc first? I've not been able to find that answer anywhere yet. It would sure save me some time if I can do it that way. It's about 25G that I want to transfer.
What about if you want to use this machine for viewing videos? I bought it for that purpose and my ASUS laptop with WIN10 does not work with this, so far. I have uploaded VLC media player, but it isn't finding the video I just put in the slot :( Can you help?

You can. You'll just plug it in your PC's USB drive, it will appear as a DVD drive, then you can use any software to watch the DVD you inserted. Smart TV's can also work with the drives to play video!
Arrrgh...I have the same drive, installed it successfully, but when I put an instructional DVD in it to watch it, nothing happens. In fact, when I click on the desktop icon to open the program, it does list PLAY as one of the things it does, but I'm unable to make it do so. Can you help please? Thanks very much!
Ah, let's just say that my new computer came with Windows 10. I presumed that when I downloaded the DVD player's software that it would take charge--that is, when I put a DVD into it, it would play it. But it doesn't. Instead a Microsoft message pops up asking me what program I want to buy to run it. At this stage of my new computer experience, I don't know whether I hate the computer for coming loaded with Windows 10 and Microsoft 365 (which I will not use even if it means handwriting letters), or Microsoft for making my life a living hell. I am NOT computer literate anymore (used to be years ago in my workplace), and I don't have any grandkids to teach me, so I'm stuck hiring a computer tech to come and make things work. I really miss the old "plug and play" days. And yes, I'm old and feeling older (and dumber) by the minute! Thank you so much for your reply! I ended up borrowing my husband's old computer to watch the DVD, telling him to treat his old machine like it's made of jewel-encrusted gold.
Right click the file and select "open with..." Try windows Media player or any other you own. VLC is highly recommended since it can play damn near anything and is loaded with features.
@@UsernameBarbF Even if you have VLC player installed it will still do that store pop up wanting you to download Microsoft's version of the same player but different name. Just close out that and right click to choose open with VLC

Are you trying to play the DVD on Windows 10? If so, W10 doesn't have a built in DVD player, so you have to use VLC which you can download online.

Also note that the max read on DVD is 8x. So if the DVD you're trying to play is burned at 16x then it is uncompatible
