I planned to backup old media before my old Mac died. I bought one in 2017, a week later my MacBook crashed. Bought a MacBook Pro in 2019, I couldn’t find my SuperDrive (didn’t look too hard).
Just found it, started backing up media (The Boondocks animated show, no longer offered in the US iTunes Store).

Thank you. I purchased one of these new today, it is still available in the local Apple Store.
The reason I bought one, to permanently store photos and videos. Hard drives can be destroyed, emps etc. hard drives degrade over time. And who trusts these photo storage services to hold their most precious memories as a primary storage… a good dvdr can last 75 or more years if stored properly. It’s crazy there is no better storage option, but it is what it is.

@@andrepalms You can buy adobe CS6 on eBay or through less reputable means... & download it using the Disc. Unless you have MacOS 2020 Big Sur than you're out of luck. You can also download Affinity Photo & Affinity Designer which are much better (& Cheeper) than Photoshop & Illustrator.

I think the majority of people have moved from CD/DVDs to pen drives and no one uses these disks anymore. In fact, i cannot recall when the last time i used Discs in the last 5 years (expect for this video). For me, These were mainly used for backups and storing media. But nowadays we have cloud storages for backup, pen drives or portable Hard disk drives for media. I think that’s the reason Apple stops manufacturing or updating these things.
Jennifer Wasylenko- Apple has NOT discontinued the USB Super Drive dvd /cd driver ! I know this because I just viewed it on both Canada's and the US'S Apple Store on the internet .Koof tech was using a 2015 MacBook Air which can be directedly connected to with this CD/DVD Drive, BUT it can NOT be directly connected to MacBooks for 2020 !
To connect this 2020 USB Super Drive to a 2020 MacBook you need to buy a separate dongle because the MacBook has a different type of USB port than the USB Super Drive dvd/cd player has. This video was VERY Misleading and factually incorrect !
It's January 2021 and this product is available on the Apple website. I don't think why some of you are saying that this has been discontinued, because it hasn't. I have a more recent MacBook Pro and need an adapter to plug the CD reader to the computer. However, like I said, the product is still available and should continue to be so for another while.

I am not sure if there is a different between them. I guess they are the same just a different model number for different region.

That all worked but how do I burn it so that it will play on aNY DVD player?
Mine is not working. I selected REGION 1 (USA) but the error reads REGION NOT PERMITTED and won’t let me play the dvd’s. It’s a MAC AIR
Maybe the dvd you are trying to play is not a region 1 dvd. Dvds come with Region Codes so that they cannot be marketed in a different region than it is supposed to be sold in. Try to insert a region-free dvd and see if that dvd works or not.
Do you know if the SuperDrive works with a powered usb hub?
Hi, does this work with a Mac Mini. Apple support in India says it won’t - because Mac Mini didn’t have an optical drive ever. But I wonder if they are right. Thanks in advance.

Does this work with the M1 MacBooks? It’s not listed as compatible on their website
GalaxyNexus- I just received my MBA M1 and have played several dvd's on it , so yes it works with the M1. However, you have to make sure that you get the right adapter for the M1. in order to hook up the superdrive to it. The adapter is the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. The adapter has 3 connections : HDMI, USB, USB-C.
@@STICKITINYOUREAR ok, thanks. Good to know. For some odd reason, Apple only lists that the Mac Mini is the only M1 device compatible with it.
@@GalaxyNexus1 -FYI, if you go to the Apple Store online and click on the pic of the superdrive and scroll down and look at system requirements instead of compatibility you will see that it says ALL Macs made after 2008 are compatible if they don't have an optical drive. : )

No. Only CD and DVD

Yes it works if your MacBook doesn’t have a usb port and you plug it in using a dongle.
Marie- If you go to Apple's website it will explain which dongle you need. You can find the inf. under " compatibility" .

You can buy this at any Apple authorized reseller ( if the have any stock left).
The second option is to buy from any online marketplace such as OLX, Ebay etc. maybe you can get it from there.

Yes! You will need a USB Type C to Type A Connector/Adaptor.

Joseph Grosso- Not sure I understand your question. Do you want to watch dvd's on your superdrive on your tv? If that's your question then, yes you can , using an adapter and an HDMI chord. If you want to connect your MBA M1 to an apple tv ,you can, but that has nothing to do with watching dvd's on your apple tv.

Ok let me explain.
1.)Streaming = potential failed internet OR failed company. THUS nuked streaming ANYTHING. If a company falls or servers crash your entire media library is done.
2.) When you own a physical copy of anything you own it forever. This is not a hard concept to grasp. Yet people seem to think it's so foreign.
3.) If you're willing to gamble and give your life to conglomerates and let them tell you what you can or can't own digitally and cutting out a physical library. Then good for you. But you don't own zip if it ain't hard data on the hdd. That's still streaming.
Finally
Is it 2007 ? Um no actually. But this is a common sense solution to a big evolving problem.
If you don't see it that way go ON your way. But don't be a little punkass dissing good people who are just living their life and minding their own buisiness.

Can you play all region codes of the DVDS?
Not all region DVDs. You can set the region in which you are using it to play the DVDs for that region. You can change the region of this SuperDrive 5 times only. After that it will be stuck on the last set region code.
This thing doesn’t seem to work… guess I’ll have to go to the Apple store and get my $ back 🤬🤬

Honestly I’d use it to download my music cds on my mac and then transfer on my iPhone. I have all of my music on Cds that I’ve purchased throughout the years.
CDs and DVDs are an excellent way to make hard copies of music, games, and other data.
If you have to ask THEN YOU DON'T GET IT. move on.

No! Only for Mac Laptops or Desktops
