    For all the people who are confused about his initial bits about sunlight. IIRC it's actually atmospheric carbon that makes the mass, but the sun does provide the energy.

    Hey Growing! Did Joel say how many times the paddocks were grazed a year? I heard him say that the plot he was standing in they would not come back to again.

      He means 2020. I'd say he will re graze in the spring.

      We do managed grazing similar to Polyface and it totally depends on your area and how fast the grass go back. I'm up in Saskatchewan, Canada and we can usually get 2 passes in a season (june-oct).
      Lots of factors play into it and it varies week to week what might be possible, but generally you have a baseline average for your area. The lower you graze the longer the recovery. The less rain the slower the re-growth.
      We pushed our cattle through the pasture pretty quick in June and then we can hit it again July/August. And depending on August rain/heat we might be able to get it again in September/October until we are froze out with winter.

      I think he said 5th time in the video. Which I could see that in his area with more heat and moisture and longer growing season.

      Shawn thank you for your response. We are in Delaware so conditions are right for 5-6 maybe even 7 passes I just didn't know from the video if the standard was one pass. I thought that was a shame and was going to be a hindrance since I don't have enough space to graze only one pass.

    how can his cow days per year be 400? there's only 365 days in a year?

    • @bjgarris
      @bjgarris 3 года назад +1

      It’s 400 cows not days

    • @northshoreireland1074
      @northshoreireland1074 3 года назад

      It’s cow days per acre. Meaning he could run 400 cows per acre for one day or a single cow could be sustained on slightly less than a acre for a year.

    Joel running 400 cow days per acre and his neighbor only getting 80 cdpa. Presumably he's 5x more efficient with land. Yet Joels beef is 4x more expensive than his neighbor. Something doesn't add up.

      "Management intensive" is the key. More efficient for the animal and the land...but it's much more labor intensive.
